@Anti Toxic That is so relatable for me. My school doesn't cause me stress the way these schools do, but I'm depressed for a totally different reason.. I'm Korean and in Seoul there is something called the 8 areas of Kangnam, which the most prestigious schools are located, and studying there literally gives depression to everyone. Their status is valued by how you are more superior to the others. To get the highest grade, you have to be in the 4 percent of all students. For example, 96 out of a total of 100 is an excellent score, yet if the 4 percent of all students managed to get a 100, and the next percentage which is 7% gets a 98, the next 11% gets a 97, you can get a grade 4, which is a grade that is actually impossible to go to a good college. Also, Koreans don't get a chance to see the exam(수능,which is the korean version of SAT/ACT) multiple times, so your life depends on that one exam. All the studying you did is meaningless if you screw it up that one time. It's sad I'm actually living in this judgemental country. They even look down on you if your major isn't related to science/engineering/math. It's hard for people like me who want to major in literature or the social arts.
It's a shame, I hope things get better for you. It angers me to see you guys go through this mess. The saddest part of it is the acceptance like you said. After doing everything in your power to excel by studying late at night by even not sleeping, You still have to put a picture of your face on your job applicant and if your not up to the beauty standards set you might not get the job. This really gets me thinking if life is really worth the stress.
@M I K U People still get judged by their looks by the employers. Good looking people get jobs way more easily than not so good looking ones, not just in asia but also in europe, the us etc ( UK included ). There are multiple studies to proof this.
@SilverTsunade Damn sorry mami tsunade. I'm just talking about the pressure put on them for standardized testing. I'm already used to studying my ass off on things that do and don't interest me. But yeah it feels like they have no choice but to study. A majority of kids aren't fit for that lifestyle. A society where you are just defined by a score on a test can make someone's life a living hell (parents).
@SilverTsunade Plus.....Each person has their own potential and it takes time for them to realize it... So please, don't call people who just kinda stated facts as "lazy" cuz NO.......no one is.
@_Cloud_A7x_ you know that the truth is? Procrastination isn't being lazy, it's fear. The fear of the lessons being hard, so you don't do it. I should know. I never procrastinate with the subjects I know and the subjects I'm good at. But I procrastinate with the ones I'm bad at. I've gone through trauma because of school, but I'm slowly rising up. Is that what you call laziness?

I am a Korean who had spent my childhood in the US, South Korea and other country. I DO NOT want to raise a child in SK. I would never let my child go through what students in SK are going through. Also, November is when the Korean SAT is held. During these times, apartments and buildings make sure they lock the door to the roof because many students fall and die.
the fact that these kids cant even have leisure time away from their studies without people constantly reminding them about their future is heartbreaking.
It might just seem easy. But it's WAY harder then you think. Think about it. Your trying to save lives. So they really need to know all of this. I am not from Korea or I am not Korean but It's a lot.
DamKaKaDaNi It sure is.. Many middle and high school students sleep less than 5~6 hours a day.. I'm going to high school this year, and for the past three weeks I got barely 4 hours of sleep trying to deal with all the homework from my institutes (even though it's winter break..)
I was pretty sick this week (probably from lack of sleep) and I fell asleep at 10 once. It was pretty disastrous because I couldn't finish my assignments. I really want to sleep but I have homework that's due at 12 tonight.
I am a 16 year old student. My school life is very difficult, and in an oppressive atmosphere, I have to study by recklessly. After school, I can't play, I go to an hagwon, and when I come back, I have to study again. I want to live a happy and worry-free life.
@BadVIBES Purpp Education is teaching our future generations to learn by themselves and understand basic concepts about the universe as well as become better humans beings. Education is when you are learning and actively involved in tasks and activities that will teach you how to think and find different ways of solving problems. Teaching kids how to think and where to look is what true education should be. You should not be considered educated if you are able to think inside a box and complete an assignment to earn a few high numbers on a report card. It should be a meandering path for each and everyone, whilst what the current system does is teach you how to ace a test and closes you off in 12 grades with an extra 4 years at a bigger school but at the cost of what your first home could have been, unless you want to flip burgers. Unless you are disabled, there is no way you could say that is an acceptable way of life and learning!
South Korea: Doing school 15 hours a day, literally 50% youth committing suicide because of overpressure, doesn't let students follow dream. My mental health is so ruined. I sleep around 2am and my classes start at 8am. Since, our country is overpopulated, they eliminate candidates and that is why it keeps getting tougher.
Totally relate, I was almost to the point of going insane and suicide in the Chinese educational system as a ninth-grader. I felt the entire educational system in China has ruined me mentally, and I have no clue what I want to do. When I was studying in the U.S. as an undergraduate college student, I was forced to be a science major bc of my Dad, so I picked pharmacy. But I just couldn't do it because I hated it so much. I was really into arts, social sciences, and humanities, which are shunned by my parents. So now I'm in this limbo of trying to pursue my dream while fighting the guilt. At the end of the day, it is my life and this one life only. I don't want to waste it living for anybody and be severely unhappy and depressed. The asian educational system is definitely fucked and insanely inhumane....
That's really sad, GAOKAO for you guys and JEE (India) for us. I mean both are the top 2 toughest exams on this planet and they want 15-16 yrs to clear that. And yes I'm preparing for it not because of my parents (they want me to do anything I want to).
This destroys both mental and physical health of millions of kids. It's ridiculous how parents damage the happiness of their children by such shallow goals like "money", "job" and "marriage-prospect". As if an existence bellow the best university is worth nothing. INSANITY
While majority of the documentary I agree with, it's much more complex than just good school equating good marriage and so on. The reason why any student of any discipline studies harder than the populace is for their own greed, goals and benefits. I think average or above average is acceptable to some while students such as 8:37 make up the top 1% anywhere in the world. I'd rather have someone with hard working ethics with the likes of her than some half-assed character.
The problem is that if these partens act different, their children wouldnt be able to do any job, which would pay their daily stuff like food, health care etc. There arent that many jobs, the other perspective some of them may have is to work at stores like h&m&Co, but for that you need to fit the beauty standards&the minimum wage is about 6$, thats not enough to live there, if you arent married or have rich parents. These parents are not bad persons, they just want their children to live a normal life without becoming homeless, the parents stand under the same pressure, they work all day&spend all the money for education, there are no other possibilities, some rich ones even leafe the country for a few years or spend a lot of money , to send their children to international schools, but then those children will never be able to go to a Korean University

Their status is valued by how you are more superior to the others. To get the highest grade, you have to be in the 4 percent of all students. For example, 96 out of a total of 100 is an excellent score, yet if the 4 percent of all students managed to get a 100, and the next percentage which is 7% gets a 98, the next 11% gets a 97, you can get a grade 4, which is a grade that is actually impossible to go to a good college. Not to mention the youth population becoming lower;
because of most of young people didn't want to live that pointless robot life
The main issue isn't suicide though, its a problem but poses no real existential threat to the existence of the nation. The real issue is the constant scrambling for academic achievement leaves young adults with very inept interpersonal skills/ time for personal relationships leading to record breaking low birth rates. These birth rates will first strain the economy by putting the burden of looking after an ever increasingly aging population on an increasingly diminishing workforce. I'm Korean and I am a middle school student(13 years old in most countries) . Mid-term test is coming soon, and we really study a lot. Yesterday was Saturday, and I just studied the whole day. In the morning, I went to a study cafe, and I spent 3 hours studying history there. Then, I went to my science academy, and studied science for 4 hours. I arrived home nearly 11pm, and I studied until 3am. And this is almost my daily routine home-school-academy. Also I have never slept before 1am in this year. South Korea's academic problem is really big.

@@randalica92 I heard the education in Germany, Finland, and Norway is pretty good. What do you think?
@BadVIBES Purpp Math and Science are the two most important subjects in my opinion. But the way they are taught is what is wrong.
Ammar Siddiqui And Sweden
South Korea: Doing school 15 hours a day, literally 50% youth committing suicide because of overpressure, doesn't let students follow dream.

Totally agreed. The pressure is real. Being an Indian, you might know as well, I wanted to take commerce, but couldn't. If you aren't a science student, you are actually a nobody to the society.
At the end of the day, it is my life and this one life only. I don't want to waste it living for anybody and be severely unhappy and depressed. The asian educational system is definitely fucked and insanely inhumane....
