DEAD END! Northern Reaches of the Lancaster Canal by Narrowboat - Ep. 54
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 жов 2024
- Exploring Britain by Narrowboat, after forty miles of beautiful, lock-free cruising, we reach the end of the Lancaster Canal by narrowboat. We can't take narrowboat Silver Fox any further north on the Lancaster Canal.
At Tewitfield the canal is literally split in half by a bridge over the M6 motorway. Beyond lay the 'Northern Reaches', with locks, bridges and miles of waterway, although un-navigable.
In this episode, Colin takes a look at the Northern Reaches of the Lancaster Canal before heading back south.

Love Shaun’s huffy face and the subtle “please don’t come and talk to us” LOL I feel like that in life a lot! x
Ha ha! Thanks Sue. I didn't want people thinking I was being mean or unfriendly. Just tires me out sometimes. x
If a niche had to be found then you've found it - lovely vlog, great storytelling, stunning scenery and great production
Aww, thank you Martin! We're having a great time 👍🏻
You are a natural presenter and I love the drone shots. Great job. Thanks
Aww, thanks Gill! ❤️
Great videography! Your videos are just getting better and better!
Thanks Stuart! Wait while Friday. I'm our biggest critic but I'm loving the Friday vlog so far! Drone heaven! x
Loved the history commentary, would love to see more of that! The drone work really adds to the vlog production! Well done as always Colin and Shaun.
Thanks again, Scott x
Outtakes - single finger salute - Priceless!
😂
Best narrow boat video of the week
Awww, thank you! 👍🏻
Excellent integration of optics and music. Not just this blog but all prior ones, as well.
Thanks, Cal 👍🏻
You are a wonderful couple to watch, never been particularly interested in canal boating, but you are making me appreciate more of what our great country has to offer, and makes me really want to go and do a nice extended holiday cruise at some point!
Do it! Ha ha! Thanks for a lovely comment 👍🏻
That was really interesting and beautifully filmed. Colin, I thought you were reading all that information out. I didn’t realise you were memorising it! You’re so good at explaining things and you’re so natural in front of the camera. Top marks for that fart! 😂 xx
Cheers, had it brewing a while 😂
Foxes Afloat 😱🤣
Colin,
Very nice bit of historical teaching. And stunning videography throughout. You’ve got a natural talent for teaching. Looking forward to more.
That’s lovely of you to say! Thanks Peter 👍🏻
Always a pleasure to watch
Thanks Liam! 👍🏻
Great video. I really like the mini history lessons, especially the way you present them.
Cheers, Dan!
Another brilliant video guys!! I vote you do a video on the history of each canal once you've got to the end of them!! Really enjoyed it!!
Thanks James! x Good idea too 👍🏻
The history lesson is very cool; it gives a great perspective on how long the canal system has been in place. The fact that it is still around (for the most part) is a testament to how history is treated in Great Britain versus in the US. Unless it's sacred ground or a historical park, we bulldoze it over and build on it. And the fact that the US really came of age during the automotive revolution greatly limited the canal system use here in the states; on the other hand, RV's are popular here. I think that's one of the reasons why we watch these videos - it's a source of a holiday fantasy, per se.
Thanks, Bill! Happy to share the glorious canal system that's our home! x
Why would anyone not want to subscribe. Great fun guys. The caravan site near the canal looked nice on the drone shots. 👍🏻😄 Trev n Sue
Hey guys! Yeah, there’s loads of nice sites like that around here. 👍🏻
Love the history behind the canal.
👍🏻
Loving all the music choices🎵🎼🎶😍
Cheers, Andy!
I think the camera work on this one is next level. And I love to hear the history of the area as well. England is an incredibly rich place for us to explore through your lens. Thank you fellows so much!
Awww, thanks for such lovely feedback 👍🏻
3.11 bloody brilliant photography of the water fall!!!
Cheers! 👍🏻
Lol I had to pop back and watch the bloopers again, too funny, you guys are real muppets!
lol, thanks 😂
That’s us caught up with all your vlogs now - blame Kev @ Bickerstaffe. Thank you, you make us laugh, and you make us cry (occasionally at the same time). Love the narrative, adore the fabulous cinematography and feel so privileged to be sharing in the journey. We’re counting down until our time on the cut and can’t wait.
Hi Mandella (cool name)! 👋
Are you buying a boat from Bickerstaffe? x
Now you've just asked the $64000 question. Are we buying a Bickerstaffe? You know when you’re 100% convinced you’re going to buy secondhand, and then you step on to a boat that’s just perfect? That was us at Crick this year with both the Bickerstaffe Boats. So we’re going out on a training weekend on the Katie K to be sure, then we just have to persuade Kev we’re worthy of one of his creations .......
Glad you like my name, if you ever meet another Mandella, please let me know!
Love the old world charm of the locks , thanks for the history lesson interesting , a ancester was the engineer for the Bingley five rise locks , happy travels lol x
Wow! That's amazing! x
Love the outtakes ha ha ha ha x
😂
Great way to start the day. I can't stop laughing. Love the outtakes. Scatological humor is the best. Where ever you be let your wind blow free!
Ha ha! Thanks Allan. Glad we made you smile 😂
I love the outtakes and u guys are the best !!!!
That’s so kind. Thank you! 👍🏻
Hi boys! Thanks for the extra video. Stunning scenery!. We have the most beautiful countryside. Beautiful.....keep them coming.
Thanks so much James! I could take a million photos and videos, there's so much to see. x
You guys are so real and your vlogs get better and better each time. The videography is better each and every time. Only with the out takes do we get to see how difficult it is to make a world class vlog.
Love Silver Fox, love the way you guys interact. It is obvious that you two are perfect for each other. Keep up the great work. Love the "sound effects". ;) xxxx
Ha ha! It was real 😂 Thanks! Always nice to receive some positive feedback x
I love how u film the landscape and the water 😊 nice. And omg the outtakes 😂😂😂
Thank you!! 😁
We love you blokes! We’re here in country Victoria (Australia) and just love your vlogs and outtakes. Wish we were closer and could get to know you better! Keep smiling and laughing and loving! Barb & Wayne
Thanks guys! x
The Lancaster looks like a lovely place to cruise. You always give us so much information Colin 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Gorgeous footage and music as usual. Exceptional is becoming your norm guys. Love it!!!
Thanks David! x
Lovely seeing this and hearing your comments. Way back in 1984 until 1987 we moored our cruiser on the Lancaster Canal, as the plans for the Ribble Link were going ahead. We often cruised to Tewitfield and, I have to say, it never looked like this when we were there. The restoration of the northern reaches might happen one day. We live in hope.
Maybe one day! Slow going so far though.
If they could build the entire M6 in 10-12 years surely they could rebuild the Lankie in notime - to Kendal, even lake Windermere and beyond!
It's all about priorities, which is driven by awareness... and that seems to grow each year thanks to the amazing work of all the volunteers and employees in various canal trusts around the country, the CRT itself and of course all the amazing vlogs/channels on the internet, including this one!
(To put things into perspective: The M6 to A74(M) extension north of Carlisle to the Scottish border cost £174m, for 10-ish km of motorway, which opened in 2008)
Beautiful country side. What a great pity they did not put a bridge over the canal. Love to the three of you.xxx
Thanks, Marilyn. Yeah, it is a shame. Sending love back! 💜
Perfect! Just sat down after a long Honey bottling session, in preparation for this weeks Market, to find a new vlog from you lovely fellas in my inbox! Feet up, cup of tea........perfect!
Mmmmm. Honey! Do you have bees? I've always wanted bees, even though I'm scared of them! 🐝 x
Yes, very lucky to be a small scale Bee Farmer. The bees have taught me such a lot.....including when to buzz off and leave them alone! They very kindly let me take a bit of honey off them a couple of weeks ago, ready for this weeks market. I love your travels....thank you for sharing them....not sure about the trumping though! 😂😂🐝🐝🐝
Love this vlog. Informative, entertaining and educational. Thank you for bringing your narrowboat into my front room. Now will you get a brush and clean the mud off the carpet! Thanks fellas.
Ha ha! Welcome to our world 😂👍🏻
Finally caught-up 01 to 54 what a journey, loving it
Yay! New episode tomorrow! 👍🏻
Can tell you are a perfectionist Colin and take great care of the vlogs, they are perfect but really enjoy the outtakes as well. Nice midweek treat.
Thanks Denise! I really am a perfectionist but we have so many outtakes 😂
Great another video fabulous love your video boys.xxxx
Awww, thank you! Lovely! ❤️
Glad that someone is working to restore the rest of the canal.
Yeah, it will be great when it opens! x
Another great vlog, Colin and Shaun - enjoyed the background details and history of the canal - looking forward to the next instalment of your adventures - safe cruising
Thanks Trevor! 👍🏻
I love the little history lessons, thank you 😊
Aww, ta! ❤️
A big thumbs up lads
Awwww, thanks John! Have one back 👍🏻 x
The history presentations really bring an appreciable depth of the canal systems.🧐. The ending shot of the water going over a weir is brilliant! Stay safe boys!
Thanks Richard.
I love the landscape of the UK. Its all so green
It's beautiful upon here! 😍
Another gooden chaps love the outtakes very funny take care richard
Thanks, Richard! xxx
Another great video. Great history lesson too. Some of those shots were mesmerizing. Thanks for making my day better, really needed you guys today.
Aww, thank you! Happy to make your day better! Sending love 💜
THE OUTTAKES WERE BOSS KEEP THEM UP
Cheers, Kevin!
Another excellent video. You two make me laugh. Love watching your channel, you both work so well together.
Aww, thanks Steve! x
I still can’t be the first to respond.
Your presentation really is very professional, and interesting, I imagine it isn’t as easy as you make it appear, I’m sure you enjoy doing it , which is why you do.
Well done, all the best
Ha ha! One day you'll get the first one 😂 You're right. An average 20 minute vlog takes about 3/4 hours of material to get right 🙄 xx
Not far from me here and that motorway is so nosy but enjoying the scenery. You guys are great I don't miss a show and where you both be next. You guys are full of surprises......😎
Haha! We are! x
I live in carnforth and loved the video when you went through carnforth and hestbank. X
@@FoxesAfloat don't be shy Collin on accepting the Springer spaniel ornament dog like dillon . I can drop it off at the marina at Lancaster or carnforth or somewhere near . I know your shy but don't be . Relax . 🙂
The drone made this video perfect, showing the geographic situation of the "dead end". The drone really is a must to "raise" the views from getting boring by always being water level 🤗👍
Wait till this Friday's vlog if you like drone video 😉 Thanks Peter! 👍🏻
Why would you put a thumbs down. Don't do it. What a great series. Bruce.
We love our haters 💜 A dislike counts equally as engagement with the channel and boosts our popularity on UA-cam's algorithms 😉
Always include the outtakes 😂👍🏻
They’re always popular 😂
Colin and Shaun, I have never written a “fan” email/letter before, and frankly, have never used UA-cam much at all. Recently, I was looking at UA-cam and came across one of your more recent vlogs. I was really taken with your openness, your knowledge of life on a narrowboat, and especially your most interesting commentary while traveling the canals. The two of you have great synergy. I, too, was impressed with Colin’s frankness about his mental health! In any case, I became so interested that I subscribed to your vlog (only subscription I have on UA-cam) and have started at the beginning with your first vlog and am following them in numerical order. Hopefully, I will catch up before too long!
Well, hello ad thank you, Jim!
Hit the thumbs up-button right when the video started cause I knew I'd love it. I most definately did, thank you for the nice report with interesting info and some beautiful pictures.
That’s really kind. Thank you! 👍🏻
It's really like watching a canal tour of new and old done by a big production company. I love the drone shots love hearing the history love how you show every single bridge. Then there's the 2 of you the host. I appreciate the time and effort you put in to these vlogs. I wish you both positive vibes and good health 🙏✌
Thank you so much 💜
Great vlog or flog, frog, pint of grog. Nice to see you both settling into your new life. Thanks for extra mid week foxes fix .
Cheers Mark. Finally getting some Caribbean weather! ☀️
Hello guys, what a great peace of history. Wonderful. Kind of sad that they rushed to fill in the waterway for more road but your very lucky that some never gave up and are working to restore it. Like you said one day. Great video👍😊 Thanks for sharing🌹🌹🌹
That’s lovely of you to say. Thank you! 👍🏻
Love, Love the history. Brings back memories when I backpacked your beautiful country. Great job.
Thank you so much xx
A cracking flog! Really interesting stories here, so thanks for that and kudus to the TV presenter!
Haha! I get a bit used to the presenting malarky 😂
Superb work, all effort rewarded, superb!! Made me laugh on outtakes
Cheers! 👍🏻
Wonderful! I loved the history lesson. The Lancaster Canal is a hidden gem. It's great now that the Millennium Link across the Ribble gives access to the rest of the canal network. Let's hope Tewitfield to Kendal gets completed. Thanks for the vlog.
Thanks Karl! Fingers crossed the link is connected soon 🤞🏻
Woop woop and extra vlog, happy days (I have no idea how to get smiley faces on this post...) I had to laugh out loud when you said, "and you can walk the 14 miles to Kendal". Yeah right and then the 14 miles back again - would need a bit more than Kendal Mint Cake to get me though 28 miles these days lol (smiley face) Really enjoyed this one, (like them all) great camera shots and music and you two enjoying life and especially Dillon - awesome (another smiley face)
Awww, thanks Sarah. Here's this smiley faces you wanted 😂😂😂😂 xxxx
@@FoxesAfloat ROLF thank you xx
Oh another vlog! Glad to be second to comment. Gorgeous scenery and shots of Dillon too. Enjoying my lunch break with this to watch. Have a great week guys. Hugs ❤️😎👍🇨🇦
Thanks, Elaine! You have a fab week too! xxx
Another great video.. Tewitfield is the most northerly place on the English canal network (by 2 miles more than Ripon) ... it would be such a tourist attraction to restore all the way to Kendal... there must be some Lottery money somewhere for it. Best outakes ever.!
It would be great to see it re-open. x
Hi Foxes, one word, masterful. Enjoyed every second of it. Keep having fun. Best regards.
Thanks Jon! Glad you enjoyed it!
You are giving us some beautiful camera work. Thank you very much. I had no idea it took so long to complete sections of the canals. Massive undertaking.
Yeah, underestimated. Thanks for commenting! 👍🏻
Great production values guys. It's a lot of work. Today's episode was obviously well planned out , shot, and put together in the editing process. And the result is terrific. I like that you show us bits other than just the canal itself, but also surrounding villages and other areas, too.
Thank you for noticing the effort. It means a lot 👍🏻
Colin, thank you and Sean both for the great video. Enjoyed the back ground info on the canal, also.
Thanks Zach! 👍🏻
@@FoxesAfloat Shaun, please forgive me for misspelling your name. I know three "Sean's" and they all spell it that way. It's automatic!
A really well crafted, educational episode, well done Colin - you’re really funny, I love how you bounce off each other 😃👌👍👏👏👏
Thanks Terry! 👍🏻
Ian from Diblington Vale here on my new channel lol. Your channel is fast becoming my favourite canal channel! Colin, you are a natural to camera. The information in here is wonderful and beautifully presented. Thankyou so much and I look forward to seeing you at the Glasson Arm. Oops. I might have given that away :). Maybe you should audition for Coast or something similar Colin! Oh, Shaun. You are good too 😂
Hey Ian 👋
I definitely prefer radio, that's where my history is. Thanks for a lovely comment! We've left the Glasson Branch now. 😉
Quality video, guys 🙂👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks, Neil 👍🏻
Hey guys just found your channel few days ago and have been watching non stop love the life style and u 2 r perfect pair good luck and great adventures thanks for your channel
Welcome aboard! 👍🏻
Love the history. Seems weird seeing pubs and shops open as I watch this in the middle of coronavirus lock down. You are keeping me sane!
Thanks, Nicholas! Yeah, different world!
Thanks guys I needed you today beautiful surroundings loved the out takes I'm still giggling !! And now off to be busy with my day 😂😂
Ha ha! Glad we cheered you up ❤️ Have a fab day! 👍🏻
Lovely vid showing the canal and Lancashire at its very best. I've lived on the Lancy for over twenty years, with the odd wander onto the main network and just love it. Keep up the good work and I hope your new boat and life brings you both lots of happiness.
Thank you so much! x
Fabulous music as always. 👍🏻
Stay well foxes.
Thanks so much, Philip! 👍🏻
Thanks for the flog! LOL Great job again.
Flog 😂
@@FoxesAfloat Its a Vlog (with flair!)
You made it to the end and Dylan seems to have a new friend as well. I have faith for the Northern Reaches, the Ribble link took forever to complete too. There is a short spur off the Leeds Liverpool (Walton Summit arm) that was an option for joining the Lancaster at that point but sadly too many obstacles to overcome for it to be a reality.
Glasson dock is a place that holds a lot of memories for me (my mum loved the place and was not averse to dragging us kids there whenever she could!!!) and it as scenic as the rest of the Lancaster canal.
You two are so funny, love the outtakes 🤣 So James Brindley built the canal 😜
Can't wait for the next installment, I even made popcorn for this one!
Great comments Karen-Marie. Thank you. So lucky growing up around a place like this ❤️❤️
Great vlog, getting better every time!
Thank you so much! ☺️
Look forward to your videos and the out takes are so hilarious! made my evening so much better, thank you guys :)
Thanks, Eric! Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
Loving this whole series. You are in the areas where I grew up as a kid and watching your journey has brought back so many wonderful memories. I had forgotten how beautiful the scenery is but now realise why my father was so passionate about getting out and walking every weekend, and in autumn going picking blackberries & hazelnuts to eat and sloes to make sloe gin! Living now in northern Thailand is so different & enjoyable, but the memories are wonderful too.
As we say here, kaap khun khrap.
Aww, wow! So glad we’ve brought back some great memories for you. I Googled kaap khun khrap but cant see a translation? 😂
oh guys, we are being spoiled with another very nice vlog so soon after the previous one :) thx for sharing :)
He he, thanks Fenna! x
Very good, all of it !! Regards AJ
Thanks AJ! xx

Yes it's a lovely pub with good food

Brilliant just brilliant. I grew up round there and its great to hear so much history of the canal etc, thank you so much, that was a heck of a lot of information to remember!. Do hope they succeed at some point to join it all back up again . As usual the outtakes were fab! Cheers to you both :)
It would be amazing to be able to cruise up to Kendal! Thanks for such lovely feedback ❤️
Extra blog, great stuff lads! Liked the bit of history Colin and really good presenting skills too!
Awww, thanks Andrew! x

Great vlog, interesting history. Your production skills are getting better and better. :D
Aww, thanks George!
Awsome video yet again great to watch all the way from nz 👍
Wow! Brilliant. Thanks Hudson (Cool name btw) 👍🏻
I love ya for mentioning Leyland xxx i actually didn't know that fact... goose bumps watching this vid because i love you showing all the parts i've never managed to see. It is frowned upon parking on the M6 hard shoulder and going on a sight seeing trek hahaha
i know there is a branch on the Leeds Liverpool that would have gone through "Walton Summit"
Ha ha! Isn’t the M6 a car park sometimes anyway? 😂 Really glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
I did moor at Tewitfield and walk to Kendal (there was a a local bus to take me back). Took most of the day, but there was the issue of having to cross the M6 on foot where the canal crosses to the west side of the M6 - NOT really recommended. The route of the dewatered section was easy to follow - shame the tunnel couldn’t be walked on foot - and this was in 1984!
You crossed the M6? 😱 Ha ha! Brilliant!
