  • Eid al-Fitr is an important Islamic Festival.
    It marks the first day of Shawwal, the Month after Ramadan.
    Its date depends on the Islamic lunar calendar, so it changes each year.
    In the western calendar it moves forward about 10 days each year.
    In 2024, Eid al-Fitr is expected to take place on April 10th.
    The exact date in some countries may differ as the date is determined by the sighting of the new moon. Meaning it can be delayed if it is cloudy.
    What does Eid al-Fitr Celebrate?
    It was during Ramadan when the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
    The holiday originated with the Islamic prophet Muhammad, who had the Koran revealed to him during Ramadan.
    Ramadan is the month when Muslims observe fasting during daylight hours.
    After a whole month of performing religious activities and seeking closeness to God, Muslims take the reward for their submission to God's will by celebrating Eid with family and friends.
    Eid al-Fitr means the breaking of the fast.
    Eid al-Fitr was first celebrated in 624​ CE after a key victory in the early days of Islam.
    The day starts with prayers to thank Allah for providing them with strength through Ramadan
    Then it is a chance to enjoy all the treats you couldn't during Ramadan!
    Muslims will give donations to the poor - the idea is that everyone should be able to celebrate Eid
    Muslims traditionally visit the graves of their loved-ones on Eid after they have been to prayers.
    Though traditions may vary from country to country, other festivities typically include family visits and gatherings.
    Gifts are also exchanged, with clothes the most popular presents.
    In Turkey, so many sweets are eaten that it is known as the Candy festival!
