- When a vocoder sings, IBM704 (emulated by chipspeech) sings.
IBM704 and VOCALOID4 CYBER DIVA do a duet.
The Daisy bell is the song which HAL9000 sang on "2001: A Space Odyssey". The spaceship had not yet departed, but VOCALOID has begun to sing.

I love this song!!
I dont understand how people think this is creepy, its rlly sweet, the lyrics "im half crazy, all for the love for you, it wont be a stylish marriage.. i cant afford a carriage :( but you'll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two :)" is rlly sweet, i love that part
I think its sweet too
I suspect that HAL 9000 has ruined this song for a lot of people.
I think it’s more the uncanny valley of voices that sound somewhat human, but clearly aren’t
honestly i can't understand how people think this is scary and that ai covers aren't
it seems childish but i tried to listen to a winnie the pooh ai voice and i had to click off of it because it sounded really unsettling
@@average-wubbox-enjoyer ai voices are unsettling, but so is this, maybe a non human voice making human noises is just creepy to some
imagine, just imagine this:
Miku is sitting on a bench humming this to herself, her grandparents
Vocoder and IMB704 would sing to her when she was little, and without them she wouldn’t have the career she has now

Very much so.
Now I am going to find pain medicine for this feeling in my chest, thank you.

How beautiful is it that with all the failures of humanity, (like war and violence) there was and still are people who simply thought, “why don’t we teach robots how to sing?” Maybe it’s stupid, but I find comfort in that.
It is very beautiful. I’m happy that we get to see this kind of instance where it’s proof humans had and continue to create such nice, emotional things with the technology we made.
No no i agree humanity has screwed up a bunch but sometimes we make something cute for no other reason than we can another example of this is when they taught curiosity the rover to sing happy birthday

That’s really wholesome ngl
that is the definition of humanity. ; )
It’s kinda weird we decided the first words from a computer is a silly love song. But I must admit, it’s heartwarming.
Daisy Bell was not the first thing the IBM 704 said but it was the first thing it sang.
why was this the comment that made me break
Scientists are funny like that.
“Make sure it learns love, all love!”
-Random scientist who wanted to make a badass quote
The scientists who did it were from Bell Labs. You think the name had anything to do with it?
I can imagine the developers of IBM going apes**t as their baby supercomputer sang with all it's kilobytes.
To everyone: The vocaloid might sound like that because of the particular voice bank used or the tuning. You can get some insanely realistic stuff if you're a very good tuner!
Yeah, plus I've heard English miku is harder to tune than other English vocaloids
This isn't even Miku, it is "cyber diva"
I feel like V1 sounded more realistic 🤷♀️
Sounds like 3 generations of computers, a grandpa, a mom, and a teenage girl, singing in harmony...?
Ha ha yes
So true
Mike Dev Yes. And I love itt
This comment makes me so happy
That was supposed to mean, a grandpa, a mom, and a teenage girl of 1980-1984 (idk the year, but it's over 1980 and 1984)
I'm not sure why but IBM704's voice appeals the most to me. It sounds.. almost heartfelt?
Waddy Agreed
agreed
Yes, I know what you mean.Like the ending of I Robot.
It was made by men with a passion to push humanity forward. It was the first time a computer had spoken let along sung. Those men were ushering humanity into a new age never before thought possible. They put their souls into making it.
Like an old man of some sort
Unironically: This song sounds better when robots sing it. Also this version in particular is beautiful.
Very true
You forgot Nat King Cole version of the song
i feel like we think IBM704 sounds the most real simply because the voice has that rasp to it. It has a rasp that shows the voice isn't perfect, which i feel like makes us more susceptible to believe it sounds more human, whereas the vocaloid has a human voice- but its missing the rasps, the cracks, the emotion. its missing what makes a voice human, while IBM704 somehow conveys that
I think the story could go like
IBM704 wrote this one song for his wife the Vocoder, and it's the only song he's ever wrote. It was just a passion project for him and they got married to it and sang and danced to it every anniversary. Then, by chance, they had a granddaughter that had perfect pitch and who went on to become a professional singer inspired by her grandparents.
And now perhaps once or twice a year, she comes back home and visits. And the family enjoys the beauty of their legacy.
To the husband, it was a product of his love. To the wife, it was the moment she knew. To the granddaughter, it was what started it all.
That’s what I love about the IBM704, it’s the only voice where you can hear the breath
Grandpa needs a lozenge
I think the way Miku's tuned here has something to do with that. Her voice in this song feels like it's tuned *too* perfectly. There's not even much of that classic 'robot-y' feel to it until the last verse, and to me the first verse hardly sounds like her. Granted, the purpose of her singing this song in this video isn't really to bring out the character of her voice, instead being an example of modern technology to compare to IBM704, but as a Vocaloid fan I'm slightly disappointed in her tuning here because Miku is absolutely capable of having these missing qualities. It's technically impressive, probably some of the best English I've heard from a Vocaloid, but it's just slightly off the mark.
@@BlueDogXLIsn't the vocaloid used CyberDiva?
IBM704’s voice is soothing. like he’s at peace. like he has lived a life and is now just happy to be. the Vocaloids voice sounds like a robot as it should. IBM704’s voice is what you would do to calm a child. Vocaloid is to make the child happier.
I mean, Vocaloids can do both, it’s just how they’ve done it
Yet dose have a voice an it warms my heart with so much comfort btw fuck vocaloid it sound like you know real but it's missing something to make it feel human or comforting
@@filler3021 how about you listen to some other vocaloid songs? there are plenty of voicebanks and artists to listen to. a lot of the 'humanity' you get from vocaloids is in their tuning, which is done on an individual basis. for example, you may just not like the tuning style of the artist in this video, but that doesn't mean you won't like vocaloid at all.
yes, he reminds me of a kind old man

I wish. I WISH there was a full cover from IBM704. The voice is so soothing and calming... His voice definitely sounds so peaceful. He lived a content life, has come to terms with his past and ready to face the future with happiness no matter what.
There is!
I wish there was a full cyber diva cover…
It’s interesting how the Vocaloid sounds so much like a real voice, but lacks that special something that makes it _feel_ real.
But then you have IBM704, which clearly sounds artificial, and yet you can somehow feel the emotional and heart in the singing so much more.
At least for me anyways-
I think it stems from the idea that people were putting years worth of experimentation into something that was so outlandishly complex for its time as with the IBM704, but so many take for granted today with numerous software patches that are ready to use in minutes.

But in all seriousness...that _was_ really beautiful what you imagined, man. Singing the older generation to 'sleep' before they go dead...that makes me tear up at the thought too. :(

The vibrating voice of the “newer” sounds like it is holding her tears.
:c
This genuinely made me tear up? It literally sounds like a Grandfather singing with his granddaughter.
When memory starts to fade, music has an odd tendency to stick around. This made me have flashbacks to a moment in the Alzheimer's ward, a family friend didn't have a car at the moment and asked for a ride to see his father. No recollection of who he was, but when my dad's friend started to sing a hymn he could follow right along. Never did recognize his son, but seeing him seem happy and knowing he could still remember the old song was enough. This song make me think of Miku visiting. his long term storage mostly corroded, but just enough of him operational to play that song he loved, the two of them having a little moment. Maybe I shouldn't be bawling over a computer, but I don't regret it.
The amount of emotion this song brings to me is unimaginable for reasons that are too complicated to explain.

Now all I hear is a Grandfather, a Grandmother and their Granddaughter singing together and it's adorable. 💜💜
I'm now thinking of a Grandfather IBM704 calmly singing a baby Hatsune Miku to sleep.
Good idea for a video but the vocaloid isn't Miku, it's a vocaloid called Cyber Diva
I have a theory why this makes everyone emotional. It's like... Once we decode what's being said, our caveman brain can't tell that these voices are synthetic, and all we hear is a love song being sang by a fellow sapient being, and all we want to do is comfort our silicon friend.
For me it's because despite being cruel and having the capacity for evil when no other species on earth does, humans made a computer (a "son" of ours if you will), a creation of ours, sing a adorable little love song. I'm willing to bet every voice synthesizer from the first vocaloid to every utau and as well as things like moonbase alpha have sung daisy bell. Hal 9000 sings it as a reference.
"Caveman brain" 🗿
It’s like a cute little family reunion,, not gonna lie, these bots can sing bops and my cold heart melts a little each time I listen
To me, this version is like a father-daughter duet. Or a grandfather singing with his granddaughter. Just… vocaloid probably wouldn’t exist without the IMB, so this version adds this beautiful layer of love and progress
the hum gets me so badly, it's almost like these computers are stuck somewhere and can't get out the hum of the builder reminding them they will soon be killed and melt, and the last thing they do together is sing, and it all starts with a simple sad melody at the start. i imagine that after this that hum settles in again dominating the airspace and collectively the thought sinks back in to there minds
Nobody’s talking about the vocoder. I actually liked it better than the others. Vocaloid sounds so real and can do vibrato. I love how Vocoder and Vocaloid sound the same; when played together you don’t know who is who!

its very strange that a vocaloid now, you can hear almost every aspect of a real human voice in it. accept for the one part that makes it feel real. but this, you can almost sense emotion. odd
There are some really good songs by vocaloids that have that real feel to it. Its really a thing of skill and knowing how to use vocaloids to express emotion.

It's insane how good they sing, and yet there's something that makes it feel eerie but heartwarming at the same time.
Made a story cause why not. Based off of Mike Dev’s comment btw.
So, the vocoder is the mother of IBM and sang this to IBM to cheer them up or as a lullaby. This is why the vocoder didn’t sound as passionate as the other two.
Vocoder then passed, and IBM now sings it in bittersweet memory of his mother, (explaining why IBM sounds more emotional than the others)
IBM then has a child, vocaloid (named after vocoder). Vocaloid only know this song from her still alive father, so her memories of this song aren’t bittersweet (which is why it sounds a bit more happy than IBM).

My idea was something more like 3 robots singing the favorite song of the couple who were under their care and are singing this song during their wedding anniversary even after they passed on. The robots celebrate this occasion because it is the couple's love for each other and their love for them that made them experience emotions, thus making their supposedly emotionless robot lives a whole lot meaningful.

i'm sure no one really wants to hear me ramble about the nuance of vocaloid voices and how real or artificial they can sound, so i'll just comment this instead of replying to specific people. basically i just want to talk about what makes these voices sound the way they do in terms of the quality of their voices, the program/voicebank used, tuning, and just my general opinion overall. (i'm not a vocaloid expert, just an avid listener who likes choir and piano playing so i don't have a lot of practical knowledge on voicebanks. this is all just based on what i hear and see from screen recordings of the programs playing. so take what you will of my observations lol)
but i think we can all agree in this song, the ibm704 sounds more realistic than cyber diva (the vocaloid) because of its (his?) flaws, the breaths, and the rasp in his voice lending to what human voices sound like when they sing, which is a quality that can also convey emotion. and so that leads most of us to perceive ibm704 as singing with more emotion than cyber diva's more monotone and robotic articulation when she sings, plus the mispronounced words are definitely strange enough to english speakers to the point that the way she pronounces words like "dazzling" can't be passed off as an accent of sorts. when she's in tune, she's in tune but perfectly so with no fluctuation other than the occasional "controlled wavering"/vibrato. like... to borrow a term my choir director says, she doesn't "scoop" when she hits the notes that she succeeds at hitting. when she's not in tune, it sounds strange but not even in a human way, but very clearly a machine that hasn't been programmed to actually hit the right note.
cyber diva in general is a pretty robotic sounding vocaloid, so she would sound pretty robotic regardless of if a more realistic-tuning producer used her for this. you can hear how she sounds in songs like "exorcism" by creep-p, or "i'll quit singing" by amara rhys. in these songs, her pronunciation is a lot better than in this video, and comes off as more of a foreign accent when she does say certain words differently, but she still has a definite straight up robotic tone to her voice.
there are more human-sounding vocaloids than cyber diva, obviously a popular one being hatsune miku (although she's still not the most human sounding to me), and gumi (which is my personal favourite one and is the most human-sounding between her, miku, and cyber diva). miku solid is much more realistic than her default voicebank, especially if you compare the original "rolling girl" by wowaka to the miku solid cover of "rolling girl". in the song "matryoshka" by kenshi yonezu, it's sung by gumi and miku, with both still being vocaloid voicebanks and for it being 2010 when the song was made, probably sound as robotic as cyber diva does in "exorcism" in 2016.
and in my opinion, synth v has voicebanks that sound way more human than vocaloid does entirely. solaria singing "it should've been me" by r.i.p. springs to mind, as does "aura" by ghost. though, that might also be because solaria and other voices synth v came out with like kevin, or yuma, have come out very recently in 2022. so these songs consequently are also much newer compared to the vocaloid songs i mentioned. naturally because solaria is a newer voicebank, her voice would have a lot of kinks ironed out and would sound pretty realistic by default.
so now that we see the program and voicebank itself matters in whether artificial voices sound more or less human, it's time to talk about tuning. tuning a voicebank is basically how the voicebank is used, and in which way the producer will tune each note in the vocals. think of it like us humans singing or drawing, or even the way we all write by hand differently. we all have our own individual ways of doing it, and the same goes for tuning a voicebank. in terms of singing, it's like if two people sing the same song, but one singer prefers to use a lot of vibrato when they hold notes and sings it like a power ballad, but the other has a more raw and raspy tone like a rockstar. that's kind of how voicebanks can be used differently in songs, like in the video "Tuning "Meltdown" like several VOCALOID producers" by tora_v4.
tuning can be used not just to make the voice sing the right notes, but can also make the voice sound more or less human by things like: adding breaths at the beginning or end of phrases ("machine gun" by kira, or "toxic (pmj arrangement)" by raidergale do a really good job at this, and kira is very good in general at making voicebanks sing like human native english speakers by slurring words, changing vowel sounds to what a person would sing ("ah" instead of "i", "ya" instead of "you") and omitting sounds of certain words like a native english speaker would, and even adding vocal fry), adding little imperfections, scoops, or runs and vibrato, and musical articulation (like very short notes that aren't held for long, staccato, or notes that are sustained and slurred together smoothly). depending on the person doing the tuning and their skill level, tuning can make the singer sound exactly like a human and even include emotion ("still into you" sung by solaria, produced by utautautau), or they can sound pretty robotic entirely ("appetite of a people-pleaser" sung by vflower, produced by ghost), or even somewhere in the middle ("where have you been" sung by gumi, produced by kira -- clearly robotic but also employs a lot of human mannerisms like breathing, vowel changes, vocal fry, etc.).
sometimes the producer's tuning can change over time, like with anything else. your tastes and preferences can change, you may get more skilled at using the program as you become familiar with it, or you might be experimenting with new "styles" of tuning or want a new sound for your music, or something like that. in my opinion, i think all of that is fine. no one really has to go for a realistic or human sound if they don't want to, and if they do, that's cool too! as long as it's how they want their vision to manifest in the song and they're happy with it, i think it's great. if their song sounds how they want it to sound, they don't have to change anything. and if it doesn't sound the way they want, then practice to build up their skills will only help improve that. making a robot sound human is certainly very impressive, but robots sounding like robots are just as good too, especially since it's a human who made the song exist in the first place from their own mind to actual sound that we can listen to. we've come so far from where the ibm704 was, yet we still have the same sentiments at heart. in which every day that passes is another day that the concept of "building robots who sing" can evolve and continue to create more and more lovely, fun, expressive, meaningful songs that all mean something to someone in the world. i think that's something beautiful that will continue long past today.
anyway, uhhhhhhhh. wow. i did not mean to write a whole fucking essay in an essay format about this, i guess i just got very nd and very passionate lmaooo. doubt anyone will read this all the way, but kudos to u if u actually do. and thank you, i rlly hope u enjoyed my song recs :D also i would like to give miku's grandpa, ibm704 a big biiiig hug ngl
There are a LOT of people here who talk about how Vocaloid lacks something that makes it feel "real", but if you honestly think that you probably need to listen to more Vocaloid songs, in the end it's all about tuning and choosing the right voicebank. For example, the song "Close to You" is originally sung by Lily, and though it sounds beautiful, it doesn't feel "real", it lacks emotion and you can tell a robot is singing it, but if you listen to the vFlower cover (I prefer the Teto one but she's an Utauloid) you'll actually be able to hear the emotion in her voice!
This is so beautiful in a really weird way. It shows us just how far we have come with technology, and how it always continues to improve; it shows us that great things can come from mixing the old and the new, and how there is always an improvement to be made, and sometimes looking at the past for ideas and inspiration is the way towards the future. If i had to teach a course on the history of computers, I would play this song and The Imitation Game on the first day. I wish Alan Turing and Ada Lovelace were around to see this.
you put it into words :)
The vocoder creeps me out a little. It's like a weird fusion between a robot and Cyber diva.
Carmen Ghalib Yeah. We can hear Cyva in the background.
it's so good that we came this far while respecting the old and learning from them
the song is stuck in my head, the computer version, and the Vocaloid version.
I actually cried hearing this. A smile has broken my face muscles. Its a harmony of the different generations and its so wholesome I actually cried. I never cry. Thanks for this TwT (its like a _:)_ face mixed with a _T~T_ face since I cri and happy at same time)
Shut up

Now that you say that it's ashame they didn't get GLaDOS to sing this when you start destroying her cores
Well GLaDOS would sing daisy bell in portal 3 when test subject 5 escapes or something.
Man, why does this get me so emotional? Never heard this song before, but after watching countless videos only this one brings me tears. It somehow forms a story in my head:
A mother and her daughter sing grandpa’s favorite song, which he himself sang for his wife who’s passed away. In the beginning the grandpa is just sitting in his chair as everyone sings, smiling and tapping his foot to the beat, but as it gets to the duet he’s now out of his chair, beautifully dancing with his grand daughter as if he was young and with his wife again.
Robot voices got me cryin’, man.
imagine creating robots, already scared of a future robot apocalypse, and then teaching those robots to sing
We wanted to find new friends so much that we created them ourselves. Then we taught them how to create art, one of the most human qualities there is.
You're scared of robots singing?
Lol.
The new AI's are already getting scary each time a new one gets introduced.
@@xE92vD no? how did you get that from my comment?
its just so human to teach our own creations to create art. to do something that's not exactly useful, but pretty. even if we're afraid of them
Terminators be like: "Go Grandpa!"
Such history of technology in one song!
A two story house
The year 2020
A 13 year old girl
She's home alone
It's 14:01
It'll start getting darker in an hour or so
All the lights are off
Including the normally lit Christmas tree in the corner of the lounging space
She waits for her mom to get home with her marine biology textbook her middle school's librarian had contacted the high school to get
Black platform boots and red jeans
Finished off all with a grey sweater and a beanie
She still has her foundation and mascara
Not to mention a light flow of blush along her cheeks
From her day of eighth grade classes over zoom
She's done all her chores
Finished all her homework that she could
Though she should eat lunch
Wearing her headphones she fires up her computer
She opens a new link that somehow feels all too familiar
Her librarian sent her the link to a website of articles for marine biology
She titles a blank piece of notebook paper the same as the article
She sharpens her pencil to a fine point
Ready to take her notes
She despises the dead silence
The ability to hear every creak of the house's joints when the wind blew too hard
The scratching and running of her cat in the room not too far away
The crash of the ice maker in the fridge just behind her
She falls upon Daisy Bell
Sung by interestingly named artists
Vocoder
IBM704
VOCALOID4
She puts the song on and loops it
Even though she'd never once heard it before it sounded so familiar
And even though she wore headphones it sounded as if it were emanating from the very existence around her
She finds an odd comfort
And she waits with an eager passion
Awaiting her mother's return from work so she could dive into that textbook
And so she begins her notes
Although not for a class or an assignment
Simply for fun
And she hopes she can keep this passion
Hi, you might've guessed it, but this poem is about me, and it's going to be in a book of poems I hope I can publish, nothing about this is a lie, all the noises I've described are noises that happen in my house, and I am currently waiting for my mom to get home with a marine biology textbook, I didn't lie about my outfit or makeup either, this was really just an incoherent ramble, although I really do hope it makes it into the final draft. I hope you guys like this(:
It was beautiful hopefully it does make it in I'm happy that you like the song as well it's a very beautiful song and way good luck
I'm imagining half-rotten animatronic's singing this in a lonely abandoned building with only themselves for company.
Vocoder being bonnie, IBM704 being Freddy and Vocoloid as Chica
Its amazing to think that voice synthesis was once exclusively limited to those that laboured over programming every small detail in a mid century lab/office. And now we have a vast amount of ways to conjure a voice that any average joe could have access to. And we've come so far that many are unrecognizable from the real thing.
LYRICS:
There is a flower within my heart, Daisy, Daisy!
Planted one day by a glancing dart,
Planted by Daisy Bell!
Whether she loves me or loves me not,
Sometimes it's hard to tell;
Yet I am longing to share the lot
Of beautiful Daisy Bell!
CHORUS
Daisy, Daisy,
Give me your answer, do!
I'm half crazy,
All for the love of you!
It won't be a stylish marriage,
I can't afford a carriage,
But you'll look sweet on the seat
Of a bicycle built for two!
We will go "tandem" as man and wife, Daisy, Daisy!
"Ped'ling" away down the road of life, I and my Daisy Bell!
When the road's dark we can both despise P'liceman and "lamps" as well;
There are "bright lights" in the dazzling eyes Of beautiful Daisy Bell!
(Chorus)
I will stand by you in "wheel" or woe, Daisy, Daisy!
You'll be the bell(e) which I'll ring you know! Sweet little Daisy Bell!
You'll take the "lead" in each "trip" we take, Then if I don't do well;
I will permit you to use the brake, My beautiful Daisy Bell!
(Chorus)
its actually "upon a bicycle built for two" not "on a bicycle built for"
This is honestly making me cry. Yes I'm tired, but I just came from a Tumblr post where IBM is just Hatsunes grandpa, and this is just a family reunion
This is obviously my favorite song
Why do I feel like crying??? These are programs!!! Why do I suddenly care about them so much???? Why are they making me emotional??????
The human pack bonding instinct is strong
It’s really incredible how far we’ve come. I listen to a lot of Vocaloid and UTAU, and if you really know how to tune them they can sound completely human. It’s crazy.
this makes me so happy for whatever reason
it’s a sweet thought to think about the people who were working hard to get this to work cheering n celebrating after hearing this for the first time
This song
The voices just make me sad in a creepy but loving way
I love it
