Justin. In regards to Steve Howe, he was voted overall best guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine 5 straight times. He beat out Jimmy Page the first time to take over the top spot! Steve was a beast like nobody before him.🎸🎸🎸👍😎

I'm gonna go ahead and mention now that one of the classic masterpieces (IMO) of YES during this period didn't show up on any studio album. It was the last cover they recorded (I believe): Paul Simon's *America.* Starting with their The Yes Album Tour, they'd play this cover as an encore tune they could jam to. (There's a version of it on UA-cam featuring Tony Kaye on the keyboards) As they developed their jam, they finally got around to recording it, but it was only released by Atlantic Records on a promo album featuring multiple bands. YES did finally put it on their first compilation album, *Yesterdays* a few years later. The recorded version we all love features Rick Wakeman on the keys
What they ended up recording was chock full of Squire/Bruford ear candy, as well as Steve Howe impressing. By the time they got done "Yessifying" Simon's ballad it only barely resembled the original, but it's glorious in its own right. It featured a lot of the "hard rocking" edge that YES had during this period. It's an absolute Must Listen. When to include it? Since the recorded version featured Rick Wakeman, it might be appropriate to fit it in either before or after you react to the *Fragile* album. You won't be disappointed...

Couldn’t agree more. That version is impeccable

Part of the reason America didn't show up on an album for quite a while after Wakeman joined is because there was some wonkiness between Yes's record label Atlantic and Wakeman's label A&M. I never heard the full-length gloriously good 10-minute version until I bought the compilation album Yesterdays in like 1979 (which was 4 years after it came out).

The triple live album "Yessongs" includes an excellent performance of this song, and they manage the polyrhythmic section pretty well

I'd have to say every single member of the band is a top tier virtuoso. Near perfection. Another band I regret not seeing back in the day, although they still have some incarnations of the band as far as I know, today. Yes we knew it was fantastic brother. I HAVE listened to it again and again and again.

It's such a fun record to listen to. There's virtuosity and sophistication you'd expect from prog rock, but it's always based on just how much fun hard-driving rock'n'roll is. And Steve Howe is just phenomenal. Great reaction, and a great cat. What I like about this channel is that because Justin plays it straight and never exaggerates his reactions, when he says something like "this is the shit" (rare), it really lands. Catch you on the next one.

Thanks, Justin (and hope the move is going well.) It's so very cool to watch someone react to this who actually gets what's happening musically. All of us who have heard this a million times just take it all for granted, and it's easy for us to nitpick. I will say, though that "Perpetual Change" wins the award for 'Most Improved Live', which you'll only understand if you review the 'Yessongs' live set. 😉

This song title was used for a play on words back in the '70's by Yes fans who recognized the beauty of this remarkable music. We had seen some personnel changes already (Banks goes, Howe arrives.. Kaye goes, Wakeman arrives. Then Bruford leaves, and White arrives) and we knew more changes in personnel would occur over the years, if the past was any guide to the future. There arose a debate as to whether the music was so fabulous that there should be a "Perpetual Yes" for the decades, and even centuries, to come. I liked that idea. New, younger virtuosos should arise to replace those who left, and the band would tour forever. This music should never be ignored and forgotten. Others didn't like it, arguing the best way to pay homage to the classic lineup would be to retire the name "Yes" and let any upstarts make a name for themselves via their musical and compositional skills rather than live off the accomplishments of the past.
Well, here it is, a half-century later, and we actually have Perpetual Yes, with an essentially different band (except for Howe. I won't counnt Downes) still touring and releasing albums under the name "Yes". We know at one time, just prior to the arrival of Trevor Rabin, that Squire and White were going to perform as the band "Cinema", but events led to a decision to resurrect the name "Yes", instead.
I'm having second thoughts now. There was magic on vinyl with the release of The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge, and with Going for the One, also. The Rabin version of Yes was a good pop band, but that music just wasn't at the same extraordinary level. I couldn't name all the guys who are in the band in 2024 (who's on drums now?), and Yes hasn't released a great prog album since the Keys of Ascension era, let alone another set of immortal ones. I appreciate that the boys are out touring, playing the Olde Songs for old people and a smattering of new fans, but at what point do you cross over a fuzzy line and become a tribute band to yourself? Maybe when Howe retires, or dies onstage with a guitar in his hands, it will be time to retire the name.

The first YES song I'd heard and FELL in LOVE with while seeing them LIVE during their first US Tour opening for Jethro Tull in 71. I was only 15 with my best friend being dropped off at our weekly Saturday Roller Skating Rink but the Rink was booked by 2 British bands unknown to us. YES were playing PERPETUAL CHANGE when we entered and my life changed as well at that moment, INSIDE OUT OUTSIDE IN!

    Sensational ❤
“So there you are, saying we have the moon so now the stars”
Much of the song is about the moon landings and the ambitions beyond that. It’s about evolution and how we look to space and miss the beauty of this planet - all in Jon’s poetry. Love it.
Edit: as you noted (just started watching! 🎉😂)
I always feel Tony Kaye is underrated. He’s less showy than Wakeman, but solid piano and organ

From day one, Yes has been a favorite of mine. As a guitar player myself, Steve Howe has always been in my top five, along with Page, Billy Gibbons, SRV, and Jeff Beck. Our band has played several Yes tunes and find them some of the most enlivening, enjoyable, and challenging music we've played to date. Yes is rife with top tier musicians/composers/players, second to none. With Yes, you can rarely go wrong. Singular.

Young musicians but so gifted and already aiming to be masters of their craft ! Rick Wakeman joining for the next album, Fragile, moved the band upwards and then, for me, their pinnacle, Close To The Edge, which is usually in any list of the top ten Prog Albums.
Over their 56 year existence the sound on their albums changes so much from one to the next unlike many other bands whose ‘basic’ sound doesn’t change that much.

Justin, The Yes Album in my opinion is a masterpiece. Not bad for a band's first album with all original songs! YES took it to America and they were on their way to stardom! Just think, Fragile would follow this classic. AMAZING ❗️❗️❗️👍😎

Great song. I think Steve was on a bit of a leash on the studio album either curtailed or fading out just a he should be letting rip. Just waiting for you to hit the extended version on live triple Yessongs album. Note the Yessongs album is different and better sound quality than the Yessongs videos (so I assume many if not all of the songs recorded on a different night).

Any one born around 1960ish owned this album. So great. The earlier albums had a good song or two but this was epic as soon as the needle dropped until you flipped the record over and the needle's journey concluded.

Definitely in my top 20 albums. Seen them play 5 of these songs. You should check out 1 1/2 minute longer A Venture. Jon was (is) a musical genius BUT he falls for a lot of woo. The one explosive Apollo astronauts set off on the Moon had no impact on Earth. It's the emotions that count in music. Brian (manager) has been criticized much for his manipulation of band members to enrich himself. There's a live version of Starship Troopers on 9012Live DVD (directors cut is better) that shows how Trevor Rabin and Alan White played Steve and Bill's parts. It has a very different energy and is fun.

Excellent reaction and review, Justin. 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛ Kitties out of 5! I'm so happy you liked this classic album, by a young band just finding their style. The 70's were a great time for creativity in music. Not too much interference from the record execs back then.

ok maybe i should take the question more seriously...
Permanent Waves is incredible top to bottom. I wouldn't skip any track. The Yes Album... I can skip The Clap. Yes its great and Steve Howe is ridiculous. I can skip A Venture sometimes. I like it the more I hear it. But PW was just an instant classic top to bottom. The Yes Album is great I really like it, maybe more than Fragile for reasons similar to The Clap.

@@JustinPanariello I'm a bigger Yes fan than Rush fan, but I'd agree that PW is overall a better album than this one. Yes needed to play these songs live before they were truly perfected, whereas the songs on PW didn't really need any further development.
