  • The English author and artist Ron Ranson was kind enough to allow me to film a private lesson with him in February 2013, just after his 88th birthday! He demonstrates the use of the hake brush that he popularized so many years ago.

    For any of you who have watched this or will soon, please know that Ron Ranson passed away on December 9th. He was in a care facility near his home in Oregon. I spoke to his wife Darlis and she asked me to notify using the social media accounts. He was just over a month shy of turning 92. A great advocate of watercolor, popular teacher and prolific author, and a fine English gentleman who loved his wife dearly.

    Ron came to Montana to teach a class when he was maybe in his early eighties. I was watching one of his DVDs tonight for some much needed encouragement and thought I would look to see if he was still with us. I found this vidio and it brought tears of joy to my eyes. What a wonderful gift to have Ron as a good friend. What a beautiful person he is and what treasures he has given all of us who have had the pleasure of being taught by him. Please give him regards and love from us Montana Artists.

      Sanguil GeorArt don't quite understand how you are just now responding to my comments that I made over three years ago but I'm sorry to hear of his passing! When I made my original comment, he was still living and I was Happy to hear that. Now that he has passed, I am also convinced that he will live again. Check out Mathew 5:28,29. He was a great artist and truly loved what he was doing. I look forward to meeting him again. Acts 24:15, Psalm 37:29.

      I agree with you Sanguil. Ron lives in so many artists and aspirants that wield the unruly hake. I grieved when he passed as if it were my favorite rock star passing. I owe every bit of my watercolour experience to his instruction and enthusiasm.

    I taught watercolor painting in my public school art classes to seventh grade students using a library of Ron Ransom videotapes, using only 2" hake brushes, 1" flat brushes, and rigger brushes. Our paints included only a pair of warm and cool reds, blues, and yellows. Ron's books and videos conveyed the essence of watercolor like no other teacher could. My goal was for middle school students to be able to relate to watercolor artists, to recognize watercolor paintings, and to feel competent with a simple array of art brushes, paper, and paints. I will never forget Ron Ransom's mastery of virgin washes punctuated with calligraphic details.

    Just incredible, found this thanks to DaveUsher who mentioned it, I too adore Seago, his BeachFishing painting is so simple, his pencil marks are there, the paper is so textured, I ask when, why, and how, every time I look at it. And JohnLaFarge his Andromeda, painted in 1868? I'd like to know his palette, thank you Mr.Porter for this, and to Mr.Ranson, thank you Sir.

      Maybe it's me. When I went to a major fireworks display years ago and they played 70 and 80's hits over an old "tannoy" system augmented with announcements for people to go to the such-and-such stand/tent. The next year they did the same. I didn't want that. I wanted to hear the whoosh of the rocket, the oohs and aahs of my fellow watchers and the crackles of the bonfire. I never went again. I can't stand canned laughter either on television comedies. You have the sounds of Mr Ransom's brush on the paper, his breathing, the background sounds and echoes, they make the magic for me but then I am an odd fish.

      Jake Matlet At first I thought it was his book Ranson on Skies (which I recommend by the way), but now after viewing the video again, I think it is a different book. I filmed this 2 yrs ago and just cannot recall that detail, sorry. His referral during this last demo was actually another painting positioned above the book. Watch this last demo again and you'll see a shot of it. He was showing me how to reproduce that painting, or rather, its effects. I don't think the book was a part of the exercise.

  • @rtracey308
    @rtracey308 8 років тому

    question, what was the blue book that was next to Ron as he painted. I noticed on a page there were 3 paintings on it. Was that a Ron Ranson book?

    • @tmikeporter
      @tmikeporter  8 років тому +1

      +rick tracey As I recall it was a book, his authorship, on either Seago or Wesson. I recommend both books if you like the English landscape tradition. Also Steve Hall has done two books on Wesson which are quite good. This was filmed three years ago now, so I cannot be absolutely sure of the book from from rematching the video my guess is most likely.

      Good morning Mike Porter !!!
      God Morning Ron !!
      You can not imagine how much I appreciate your answer. I feel honored ... I would like to say how delighted I was in watching the lightness with which this famous watercolor painter still performs his paintings. I am taking the first steps at this enchanting world of mixtures of colors in water. Despite the distance, I'm from Brazil, it was like being right next participating in this precious and beautiful, resourcefulness in the art of painting. I want to send to this noble and talented painter all my respect and affection. A strong and warm embrace.

      Monica, allow me to recommend a few painters to you that you can look at on the WWW. Trevor Waugh. Jem Bowden. Steve Hall. David Taylor. All excellent artists who paint in a more impressionistic style.

      I will watch the painters recommended by you. They must be really wonderful. I already beginning Saturday a course of watercolor painting. It will be necessary to acquire more detailed informations. Thank you for your kind response. Recommendations to all these brilliant painters from a Brazilian who greatly admires the art in watercolor. Honestly.

    Well, Stephen David Rathburn, I just happened upon Ron Ranson's video this morning, October 9, 2018. I am sincerely loving the simplicity he puts into the process of his paintings. I should be packing up my belongings as my house just sold and I need to move on, but I am mesmerized; I guess that means I am supposed to put the packing off for the moment. Thank you Ron, for teaching me to simplify, simplify, simplify; so much easier than struggle, like you said, no need to paint every leaf, so-to-speak!

    Thank you for showing. No matter how many professional artists have tried to describe how to achieve “scraping out a tree and other marks”, not until I have watched Ron Ranson show how to do, have I learnt the correct way and have learnt to do this correctly At Last! 😊 Sorry to learn Ron is no longer with us, but how wonderful he was able to do what he loved right to the end. Thank you Ron Ranson your skills will live on. 🌹

    I love the way Ron shows how to mix that purple sky and shows that “We must remember, Watercolour Dries Lighter, so not be afraid to paint dark! “ It will be much lighter dry than when wet.

    Thank you for the video Mike! I have several of Ron's DVDs and books where he says he used Bockingford paper. I have some Bockingford Aquarelle 140lb paper, but can't seem to get the same results as Ron. Do you know which type of Bockingford paper he used?

      I found the same problem. I have had luck with the 14x11 Strathmore Windpower watercolor pad. 15 pages for about 13.99. Michaels always sends out 40% off one item coupons so that's how I get them affordable. I tried the series 400 Strathmore and it did not perform like the paper Ron worked on in his dvd's. At this point, I am about 10 pads in on Windpower and the seem to behave like I want them.

    I was fortunate to have attended one of Ron's workshops in 1999. A wonderful instructor and true gentleman! Our group had a surprise anniversary party for Ron and Darlis. They loved it! I have many of Ron's videos and books (one of which he signed for me). When I'm near the end of a painting and tempted to "fiddle" with it, I can hear Ron's voice saying, "Don't fiddle with it!"

    He uses the Ron Ranson Large Hake from Pro Art. He is also using raw sienna here and not yellow ochre. In several of his books he mentions his dislike for yellow ochre and uses raw sienna mixed with burnt umber or with lemon yellow for a range of ochres. Also, in his books he greatly praises the Cotman line of watercolors.

    • @tmikeporter
      @tmikeporter  8 років тому +2

      Ron will tell you that Cotman is just fine as a watercolor paint brand for a new painter to learn on, but he certainly recognizes the difference of an artist grade paint. He used Cheap Joe's paints at the end of his workshop career which are made by DaVinci; and Ron was teaching workshops at Cheap Joe's so he was given those paints freely by the company.

    Soy autodidacta y, lo poco que se, lo he aprendido de Ron Ranson.
    Compré sus libros y, ahora en estos vídeos, he sentido la emoción de verle pintar en vivo.
    Ójala pueda hacerle llegar a él la inspiración que ha sido y es para mí su obra tan viva y sugerente. Sus atmósferas me cautivaron desde la primera vez que vi sus acuarelas.
    Muchísimas gracias, Mike Porter por este regalo. Jamás pensé llegar a estar tan cerca de Ron.
    Desde España, un abrazo para ambos.
