One of the most powerful and saddest moments of the film that I feel many people miss is the scene where Derek and Danny take the nazi shit off the walls. Afterwards the walls are empty. The whole room seems empty. That shit was their whole world, and without it, life doesn’t have much else in it. But at the same time, it’s like a blank slate where they can write their own future.
In the original cut, after Danny gets killed it goes back to black and white with Derek shaving his head again, alluding to him going back to the white power movement but supposedly Edward Norton refused to release it that way. Very powerful and important film, glad you guys got to see it.

I can see that interpretation, but also from what I read he was just always more interested in live theatre. I think he was a professor in the field for a while, too. Prior to DS9 he'd had a semi-successful run in Hollywood acting, had a good side character role that they tried to make a spin off series of ("A Man Called Hawk"). I think he kinda just got tired of the Hollywood machine. But that's just me speculating on a few events.
I think it's also one of the reasons he did so well in DS9. He worked like a stage actor in a lot of ways, same with Patrick Stewart. The classical techniques they used in their acting really fit the structure of ST.
Honestly I think after DS9 he'd made his money. He's done a bunch of stage stuff since then but it seems like he got his nest egg and figured he'd kick back and enjoy the rest of his life rather than work until he died like a lot of actors. Man has the right idea IMO.
There’s two movies I always recommended to give people perspective on hate and drug addiction. American History X covered the hate and Requiem for a Dream takes care of drugs/addiction.
Something I find significant is, when Little Henry pulls the trigger on Danny in the bathroom, you can see the hatred in his eyes. Fast forward to the moment when he puts the bullets in his chest, and you see the emotion of hatred in his eyes change to immediate regret. A little fun fact.. JUST found this out.. Little Henry in American History X is also Lil Chris in Friday. The kid that keeps knocking over everybody’s trash cans.
The feeling of regret hit instantly but it was already too late 🤦🏾♂ and the cycle continues sadly.. but love the fun fact because we would have probably never found that out🤣
The basketball scene Edward Norton went through 6 months of training with Tim Grover. He said if he can't dunk the basketball he wouldn't film those scenes faking the dunks. He wanted the film to feel authentic especially the basketball scenes. He wanted all of the basketball shots filmed as if they played a real game.
@gingerbreadman1969 This is just what I heard from Ed Norton and the director in interviews. It's probably just a director decision to be more dramatic in the scene. If you don't know Tim Grover is Michael Jordan's trainer and Norton said it took him around 6 months to actually increase his jumping ability for the scene. I also heard the rim may have been under regulation (not confirmed) during filming to make Norton look more athletic.
@@zombiegoatt4282 I don't doubt what you heard, it just seems to me if you could really do it, or spent 6 months of training to increase your vert like that (which I've never heard of.. if that were possible every college player in the country would be able to slam dunk) you definitely film it wide shot to get the authenticity. Just sayin'. 🤔😏
@gingerbreadman1969 you definitely can increase your vertical but it won't be but 3 to 8 inches. Reportedly Norton was able to grab the rim before shooting so he would only need about 4" of improvement if that's true.
@@zombiegoatt4282 So it's back to why shoot the scene from that angle then? Like he jumped off a trampoline or dunked on a 7' rim? On top of that, going from being able to touch the rim to dunking a bball BEHIND your head with TWO hands.. gonna take more than 8 extra inches, which I'm not buying either. C'mon man. 😑
The fact that you guys watched this movie with a completely open mind and were able to see the message. You would have had every right to get upset and turn it off. Huge respect.
As far as catching charges The dude on his porch with the gun - EZ self defense The dude running and the dude trying to drive away - DO NOT SHOOT Can't shoot people fleeing the scene, even if they got your property It stops being self defense when your target is trying to run Yes they are theoretically still a danger, they 'could' turn around and start shooting... but until they do, hold your fire or you're goin away for a long time.
I think one of the more subtle points this movie makes (and it is generally NOT subtle), is that Derek truly committed murder, not self defense and got three or four years. But his friend in prison stole a tv and got more. I think that’s still pretty true in a lot of places. What determines self defense isn’t just about the actions. I’m a middle aged white lady and I don’t believe for a second I’d get the same sentence as a young male POC. Even if we behaved exactly the same in exactly the same circumstances.
People hating on the black kid that shot on Danny but that's part of the hate cycle. He was probably consumed by the same hate that Derek had when he was part of the gang. What i like about this movie is the quote from Sweeney. People are easily influenced and become angry because of life experiences and that bring violence. But hey, none of what they do make their life better
Derek's hate stems from his dad being killed by black people. That kids hate stems from his own people. And he killed at the end because he was mad that he was stood up to. Are you joking by comparing the two? Not comparable? Yes hate in general isn't good, but dont compare the two. Or try to make it out to be similar. White people didn't make that black kid join a gang and become hateful. It wasn't anything white people did, to make him become that way. Black people did make Derek become hateful to them. Through their actions.
wrong, the moment you become a murderer is the moment you should be hated. danny also had hatrted and descriminatory teachings and didnt kil anyone. stop excusing murderers.

@WretchedDrummer it was the 90s and lots situations happened like that in the 90s. And those people were never caught. Most people wouldn't have even spoke to the police about it back then either. Snitching was a big no no back then. So your idea doesn't hold up.
@derpphil5400 back in the 90s, it would have been. You must not be from the 90s. People in the hood didn't talk to cops. Even for a murder. Everyone was afraid to get killed in revenge for snitching. It wasn't like today.

@dementedavenger2784 Exactly, it's like the alternative ending to Law Abiding Citizen. Jaime Foxx strongly pushed for the ending where he comes out looking like the good guy smh
@dementedavenger2784 but why would he blame himself at all for the ending? His brother wasn't killed over anything skinhead or racist related. He was just killed by a gangbanger who was mad that he stood up for a kid he was bullying.

Never heard of you guys before, but this reaction popped up on my feed this morning. This movie in my opinion is one of the greatest movies that doesn't get much acknowledgement. I understand it's a very very hard movie to watch, but I was born into a family with this type of hate. My father raised me that way from the time I was young until my parents divorced in my teens. This movie and this movie alone completely changed my outlook and approach to life. Sweeney asking Derrick " Has anything I've done made my life better?" is such an amazing quote. But this is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is still tough to watch years later. Because I saw this movie in my teens not long after it came out and it had such an impact on my path in life. I'm forever grateful to this movie for showing me just how pointless the hate I had for people simply because of the color of their skin.
Throughout the time we have had this channel it has really opened our eyes to how much a film can impact life. @@DaKidsReact Yeah there is no objective right or wrong but we as a species can at least objectively think about what should and shouldn't be done. It's those grey areas that are a bitch, and those cultural programed ones or the clouded with emotions/psychological issues ones that really can lead to what we would at least want to call evil.
"Evil" in most cases is ignorance, and labeling it "evil" waters down the actual problem. Be it, mental health, learned hate/ignorance, or any of the above reasons people are shitty to other people. "Evil" is a fantasy term used so we never actual get to the real heart of the matter.
yeah that doesnt make much sense lol. to some people being LGBT is evil. to others, not accepting LGBT is evil. its completely subjective. one person "calling out evil" could be "calling out good" to another. the more important lesson is everyone has different value systems based on their upbringing and personal beliefs. the law is just the outline for "values we agree on".

You guys hit on the nature of good and evil early in the reaction, and I chewed on that throughout. The relativism of "there is no evil" based on perspective is appealing, but flawed. As is the black and white application of "evil." We can understand how things came to be (relativism), but still clearly see the objective good or evil. White gangs, black gangs, asian gangs, hispanic gangs...we can somehow explain them, but the use of violence and crime to achieve something "better" is evil on its face. Great reaction, gentlemen. I appreciate your enjoying this great movie with us.

it does but it shouldn't. All it does is put kids minds into a redundant cycle of this problem doesn't exist because it's caused by this (non-existant) problem. This hate breeds hate bullshit is just a lie and anyone with eyes can see it
You guys are both right, there is right and wrong, but it is also about perspective. But when your whole perspective is about hating others, it's wrong.
I totally appreciate you guys watching and reviewing this. While it's a movie about racism and hate, more importantly it's about growth and knowledge and seeing people for people and not the color of their skin.
It's a tough movie to watch at times, but it's so well done. I also think it's remarkably well directed, but it takes on something so controversial without coming across as preachy. The movie just tells a sad and ugly story very honestly
@@ArtistDaynz90Always saw it as the black kid was just another kid raised on stupid ass principles by older persuasive people taking advantage of kids to further their own goals, just like Danny.

W reaction. Edward Norton (Derek) has said he was never the same after making this movie. I think its an important film. Its still relevant to this day. Thanks for watching this movie fellas. Much respect.
I suspect the reason Derek’s family is broke is because all their money was spent on a very talented lawyer, which is also why Derek only did 3 years. That, and white privilege.
The kid that shot Danny was caught in the same cycle Danny was. Danny had Derek show back up and showed him the light before it was too late. The black kid had those old heads leading him on. He followed Derek's path. Starting the cycle all over again. It's not two sides of the same coin. It's two feet walking the same path. Not separate but one.
Totally agree. Danny just had an older brother that had some sense and came to about all the stuff that was happening. Black kid was just getting led astray sadly. The cycle continues and another kid died and another gets put into the system.

He was also a college professor during most of his television work, cant be easy doing 2 high pressure and time consuming jobs like that at a time.
There’s two movies I always recommended to give people perspective on hate and drug addiction. American History X covered the hate and Requiem for a Dream takes care of drugs/addiction.
Nah Basketball Diaries is the best film about drug addiction I've ever seen.
Where the Day Takes You is a great movie about addiction!!
I had to shower after Requiem. It's so visceral and realistic
Adding those movies to the list!
Requiem for a dream is mad intense. Jennifer Connelly and Ellen Burstyn were phenomenal in it. I couldn't stop the anxious feeling after watching it.
The feeling of regret hit instantly but it was already too late 🤦🏾♂ and the cycle continues sadly.. but love the fun fact because we would have probably never found that out🤣
I did not know that was the kid from Friday.
It’s the kid from Friday! No way! Nice catch.
Then why didn't they use a wide shot of him leaving the ground? No way I believe Ed Norton is reverse slammin' with TWO hands. 😆😂
As far as catching charges
The dude on his porch with the gun - EZ self defense
The dude running and the dude trying to drive away - DO NOT SHOOT
Can't shoot people fleeing the scene, even if they got your property
It stops being self defense when your target is trying to run
Yes they are theoretically still a danger, they 'could' turn around and start shooting... but until they do, hold your fire or you're goin away for a long time.
cant shoot someone armed on your porch even when they are robbing you in california
It also depends on the state.
@@IonWrestlerwe can in Texas…….thank the Lord
I think one of the more subtle points this movie makes (and it is generally NOT subtle), is that Derek truly committed murder, not self defense and got three or four years. But his friend in prison stole a tv and got more.
I think that’s still pretty true in a lot of places. What determines self defense isn’t just about the actions. I’m a middle aged white lady and I don’t believe for a second I’d get the same sentence as a young male POC. Even if we behaved exactly the same in exactly the same circumstances.
@@SaltySouthTexan They can be doing a lot less in Texas lol
Exactly. That's my take. Just a kid. Now part of the circle
two sides of the same coin
Bullshit. Derek killed two scumbag criminals. That black kid killed an innocent person.
wrong, the moment you become a murderer is the moment you should be hated. danny also had hatrted and descriminatory teachings and didnt kil anyone. stop excusing murderers.
Hey guys thanks for doing this reaction. Its super important. I failed showing my son this.I didnt clarify to him how important it is to embrace life. Great job.
Appreciate the love and support, and I’m sure you did a great job of giving him these lessons throughout the time you guys would spend with each other.
Danny dies, but at the same time the kid who shot him ended his life too. It really is a double tragedy, hate creates more hate.
Doesn't show that he was arrested though. So that's not true. And back then, people got away with murder all the time.
@@ArtistDaynz90 Not all murders happen in very public areas, like inside of a school bathroom during school hours in broad daylight. A school that the murderer attended regularly where people would be able recognize him. There's something about these circumstances that tells me it wouldn't take long to find the murderer.
@@ArtistDaynz90 he had blood splattered all over him, people heard the gunshots and it is guaranteed he was seen running away. Definitely got caught for it.
That curb stomp scene was always rough though, I always hesitated watching this movie a second time because of that curb stomp scene it definitely had me feeling uneasy especially watching this first time quite a bit younger.
It was pretty harsh to watch. But when Tony Soprano does it in season 6 of The Sopranos l don’t mind.
The original ending was supposed to show Edward Norton shaving his head and then credits, but Norton insisted so they changed it.
I'm glad they did, I prefer this ending.
Yeah. I hated that ending. It would have shown that Derrick learned absolutely nothing from his time in prison. He wouldn't have blamed himself anymore.
@dementedavenger2784 Exactly, it's like the alternative ending to Law Abiding Citizen. Jaime Foxx strongly pushed for the ending where he comes out looking like the good guy smh
That would have made more sense.
@dementedavenger2784 but why would he blame himself at all for the ending? His brother wasn't killed over anything skinhead or racist related. He was just killed by a gangbanger who was mad that he stood up for a kid he was bullying.
Ooh one of my favorite movies that I never need to see again lol. I watched this randomly at someone’s house 15+ years ago when I was a freshman in high school and got glued to the screen the entire time. Such an impactful if brutal movie that had some issues of its own (director and Edward Norton battled for control of the ending) but is one of the most striking things I’ve ever watched. Can just tell by the first few seconds which scene you’re making those faces at 😬😬😬

Gentleman, you saw all the moves… it’s textbook across the board no matter who or what. Enjoyed hearing your perspectives 🙏✌️
Movies like this teach a great lesson to those who can see it and understand that it's just not a motion picture. We love to hear stories like these because usually after watching something we talk about what we thought off camera and get into deeper conversations and this was one of those films where we were just kind blown away from how real and raw this movie was. We learned some lessons of our own after watching this and we are happy we were able to capture that for you guys and we are able to speak about the lessons we learned. Thanks for the support and hopefully we can watch more movies like this one!
@@DaKidsReact Thanks for the reply guys. It's absolutely not when schools starting integration. It's early 90s California. When gang violence was huge from both parties. The lesson is hate is baggage. No point of this nonsense.
@@TheRealPapaChico truly agree, we also didn’t know when this movie was based in so we assumed a bit. But we can to the same premise that these kids are brainwashed into thinking a certain way. Hate is definitely baggage.
What were the huge white gangs in schools in the early 90s California, who were engaging in in violence that was "huge"?
@@USCFlashthe 90’s were like the “golden era” for groups like the nazi lowriders out of Long Beach/South Bay or pen1 in Huntington Beach/costa Mesa. They were both feeders to the Aryan Brotherhood and caused plenty of trouble along LA and Orange County coastlines.
Gang violence was huge from both parties lol? What? I grew up in southern California in these days. What gang violence were white people, or even skinheads doing? They were to themselves most of the time. The only real prevalent gang violence was with blacks and mexicans. Between each other or between themselves.
@USCFlash that's what I said. What huge gang violence were white skinhead gangs doing LOL. You wouldn't even see them at all unless you went to their area of town.

17:15 Red shirt is right. The only people who believe there's no such thing as Evil are those who haven't seen Evil yet, and those who use that idea as cover to hide their own Evil.
Live long enough, you'll see it, and if you don't have the courage to call it out when you see it, it will absolutely get you.
All i (swizz) was saying is that evil is subjective to the person who is viewing it.
"Evil" is a fantasy term used so we never actual get to the real heart of the matter.
yeah that doesnt make much sense lol. to some people being LGBT is evil. to others, not accepting LGBT is evil. its completely subjective. one person "calling out evil" could be "calling out good" to another. the more important lesson is everyone has different value systems based on their upbringing and personal beliefs. the law is just the outline for "values we agree on".

one of my favorite shots is the portrayal of them when they were just little kids, babies. It's a flashback but it's not black and white like the others were. It's the only colored one to symbolize their innocence at that age.
Before they were taught ignorance and hate, the world was colorful through the lens of a child. As teens and adults (Derek), their views were very black and white

Morbid curiosity led me to make sure I understood race issues when I was barely a teenager. This movie and Higher Learning (1995) helped raise awareness to where I could then see pop culture react to the horrors I had already read into.
