I upgraded my audio setup on my camera. I lav-mic was never really an option for me because a loose cable on your body in the workshop is a bad idea. But with this all in one kit from RODE I can't say no any longer. I think it sounds a lot better.

Sir Humphry Davy... discovered/invented... Aluminium and originally named it "alumium", then "aluminum". The official name "aluminium" was adopted to conform with the -ium names of most other elements. The IUPAC had identified "aluminium" as the proper spelling, but it didn't catch on in North America, since the ACS used aluminum. The IUPAC periodic table presently lists both spellings and says both words are perfectly acceptable.
So it's Aluminium if anyone asks, but if someone says Aluminum, don't bully them... Save the bullying for use of the imperial measurement system.
just came here for this comment
the reason was because some advertising wonk in the US spelt it that way (incorrectly at the time) and the name stuck.
He's also responsible for saving the lives of countless thousands of miners around the world through his safety lamp.
In Finnish "alumiini" is one of the names for metals/other chemical elements which has been translated using the base Latin word to fit the language. I guess we have averted this discussion altogether. It's just kinda funny to hear how it keeps being somekind of a pointless problem in English :D
Love the last rejoinder, Leo ...& I say, 'Aluminium' ;D
Hat's off to your Mom! She took care of you one more time. Mom's are special..
Mom is are special
@7:00 that is brilliant why has no one ever showed me this before.
Great tip!!!!
I always enjoy those videos so much, thank you for keeping us updated
You are creative despite the smallness of your workshop. I learned from a lot.
I have been thinking about that mic for a while, and I also saw Jay Bates video where he split the input. So I am very glad to see someone else who has tried it out, thank-you! I should move this up my priority list. Also, Lee Valley sells a version of that router bit. If you search for "Lee Valley Small Drawer Lock Bit" you should find it, and you can compare their instructions to see if there is more information there. (UA-cam likely would block my comment if I put a link in it. I'm not trying to be difficult!)
Looking forward to seeing the draws using that bit. Sounds quick.
Looking forwards to the drawer making. Mike information interesting too.
3 cheers for Marius' mum!
I watched this a few hours ago and was struck by the router bit. Quite a while ago I saw a video about a very similar idea. Chap had had a circular saw blade made up with a certain profile to the cutting bits. When made into a stack of blades on his table saw, the stack would cut plywood leaving enough of one ply so that the piece could be folded to make a corner with no outside joint line. Rather clever. Router bit is a little more user friendly perhaps.
Great cable fix! Much neater now.
You never cease to amaze me.
What!, no out takes. I guess the video came out perfect. Love watching your videos. Keep them coming.
My thought exactly!
I like the idea of routing a broad board, then slicing it. I would not have thought of that. Thank you.
Thanks Mrs Hornberger!
Good audio equipment is usually worth the high cost, the new setup sounds very good! :D
a nice little trick for getting the nut onto a cut bolt: using sandpaper at the end, preferably with a belt sander. I’ve seen this little trick in a video of ... Jay Bates i think some years back and it‘s working like a charm.
That router bit has the same profile as a Gaisfusshobel made by toolmaking company Johann Weiss und Sohn (from Vienna) and it was used to make a profile on the window rail where it meets the wooden frame to hold the water out when the window is shut.
I had that plane for 2-3 years and didn't know what it's used for and one day I was accidentally reading a study about 19th century windows in Vienna (made by conservation department) and there it was - a drawing of that joint in cross section.
7:15 nice tip, i shall use it from now on! Thanks!
Alouloulou is the correct word! :) Marius Hornberger keep the good work and thank you for the videos you uploading.
That's a good solution you've got for ensuring you have a back up audio track for your videos. A low tech version of that is to use the Rode SmartLav mic and your mobile phone along with your voice memo recording app. To make syncing easier, just clap your hands a couple of times with both mics on and match up the waveforms in your video editor.
Shout out to your mom, tell her she is awesome!
A small nit... sew is pronounced the same as "so".
That's a pretty neat trick to screw in the nut first, on a bolt that needs to be ground down in length. Great solution too, using a plate of AIR-LOO-MEE-NEEUM to mount the holder for the plugs. ;-)
Awesome, so awesome you are the only wood guy I watch anymore. I'm into batteries and solar now, because I really suck at being a wood guy.
I use the same mic as you do but got tired of the same thing, I combined my Go with a smartLav+
and haven't regretted it at all!
For the M series metric threads the drill size is the nominal size minus the pitch: M3 x 0.5 => 2.5mm
Hi Marius, you might think about buying the Rode lav mic to plug into the wireless system this would make it more comfortable to use and you can then hide the lav way better and don't forget to put a windjammer/ fluffy on the lave so has not to get any russelling from the cloth's . All the best love your stuff
Nice video. The audio is awesome! Nice set up! Mahalo for sharing! : )
I like your 3d printed support for your audio jacks/plugs. You need a shirt with a chest pocket for your receiver unless that would pick up clothing sounds
please tell us how the sawing machine showed itself during its operation.
Your Mom Must Be Awesome to be able to make that for you.
That microphone is fantastic
Well let's see. I live in America and on this side of the "pond", we say *A-lum'-i-num* instead of in Europe, etc, where they all say *Al'-u-min--i-um.*
But I LOVE the *Al-u-min'-i-um* way of saying it. So I do it, and it drives many Americans crazy LOL. Oh well.
I always claim that there is a shortage of aluminum in Europe ("I couldn't get a single inch of aluminum"), most americans finally get it if I ask if we should use about 25mm of aluminium instead. (fun fact: I only learned that Americans spell aluminium differently when Jeremy C. mocked the Ford guys in the Ford GT video for using "aluminum - whatever that might be" )
Some people have way too much time on their hands. I don't have time to worry about which pronunciation for aluminum is correct. I loved your response to it. That bit is always a pain to set up. I made a set of set up blocks. It makes it much quicker.
great move to install the nut before cutting the srew :)
Thanks Marius - I'd love to hear how you get on with the video mic pro+. I was looking at that same mic, but went for the videomicro for the time being. Would be interesting to know your thoughts after using it for a while. Thanks, Craig
Marius, the Master of neatness :)
Ok so this makes sense. Everyone in this family is awesome.
It would be weird if it's just one person.
Sounds awesome!
Woo Great looking
Great vid mate
19mm ! you will have to start adding conversions to 17/21th of a hoof or yard ;D
Rockler and Amazon have setup blocks available for your drawer box router bit.
That is one sweet upgrade. I am glad to see that you are pumping out more videos Marius, they are always a pleasure to watch. One question: I see you use a Lumix GH4. And you are also struggling with very confined space as I am. What lens are you using?
Thanks man. The lens is this here: www.foto-mundus.de/angebote/ausstellungsstuecke/objektive/15513/olympus-m.zuiko-digital-ed-12-40mm-2.8-pro-einzelstueck?gclid=CjwKCAjwnIr1BRAWEiwA6GpwNZ5vVZweGYCA2Q6jvYOsmeI5mnfHnJ_ifwcSuQljuV9735Ck52KwuBoCVuYQAvD_BwE
@@MariusHornberger Thanks Marius. Do you need an adapter, or does it fit on the Lumix micro 4/3 housing directly?
the lens is also micro 4/3
5:40 Marius incites violence! ;-)
We call those button things, “press studs”.
Awesome stuff. Always enjoy watching your work!
What sort of battery life have you got out of the Rode lapel mic?
They claim about 7h, which is true
@5:40 LOL. There can be only one! The Highlander of Aluminum/A-lew-minium FIGHT!
there can can be only one... pronunciation.
As if we needed even better audio to be motivated to watch your videos ;-)
nice video. I have maby a solution for the emty space by the Optima turningmachine you can look by a kitchen maker they make a corner drawer
Attach some Micropore Klebeband back on the mic or the mic pounch to stick to your skin. Keep it clipped to the shirt, the Micropore will (I guess) prevent the mic to move. To make a kind of double side tape, cut two strips and stick then together like a cross, glue side to glue side, so the ends are free and glue side faces in opposite directions.
Hello. I have it too... But Blink 500 is better solution from Saramonic. Regards!
Threading a nut onto a bolt is something I've been doing for over forty years. You learn this pretty quickly the first time you cut a bolt and then can't thread it into a bracket or thread a nut onto the bolt. I would usually file or grind the end smooth before removing the nut to remove the jagged burrs, but that's just me.
I forgot to ask, what is the part number for that router bit? I plan on making some boxes to replace the cheap plastic case that a set of self-centering drill bits came in, and it looks like it would be perfect.
ENT 16270
Yes better audio !!!!!!
By any chance would you have a link to your calipers or at least a model you would recomend please ?
The one I have is just a cheap one. For woodworking any calipers gets the job done
3:39 we call those button thingys "press studs" where I am from, although I think "snap fastener" is unsed in USA??? Fun fact, I used to think they were called press duds before I saw it written.
Yes in the US they are called snaps
[cw do not google!] I used to call them poppers but that's not very useful when it comes to google.
Loved the vid. Marius, One question - how did you get the CAD dimensions for the jack clip? Or how did you design it? It was a perfect fit! I want to get into 3d printing, but the designing leaves so many questions.
try out fusion 360 or similar and watch a tutorial involving sketches
you measure your stuff, draw it in 2D and extrude it in 3D
extremely simple if you get the hang of it
I meassured with calipers from the real piece
Thanks for info about yur video/audio setup, can I ask what program you use for post?
Premiere Pro
@@MariusHornberger Thanks.... still trying to decide which way to go !
@@fuzzywun have a look at Davinci Resolve, the free version is very powerful already
@@fuzzywun I also had a dilemma about this as the 3 major ones, Premier, Final cut and Vegas are all quite expensive ($300 for the latter two and a subscription for Premier)
I tried some free software, like the one made by GoPro but it was too basic to do anything beyond the most amateurish edits.
Eventually - I came across a software bundle on humble bundle that included Vegas Pro 14 for some absurdly low price like $20. Yeah it's a bit behind (current version is 17) but it does the job and I find it a bit easier to use than Premier which got quite bloated with time. I'd suggest subscribing to some of those bundle websites, maybe you'll get lucky and hit a deal for either of these. Honestly, while there is a difference between them and people prefer one or the other, if you get a 10x discount on one - that's the one to buy.
Great information from this video,
I'm also starting my channel soon, this video has helped me regarding....

3:55 I hope you didn't sacrifice one of your shirts xD
Can you add an affiliate link for that router bit? I'd like one, and if you get a few cents off my purchase, so much the better.
It is on his wish list .. .
@@pip5461 It was on the wish list. I gave it to him as a gift ;-)
Anyway, here's the link: www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0084D3TRG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Just interested to know if you have ever thought about getting a bigger workshop, the one you work in amazing by the way 👍🏼👍🏼
sure, some day I want to have a nice big shop, but for now I use what I have
I do love your workshop though it’s amazing, just carry on with your amazing projects more importantly 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great.
Why not have a sliding door?
good!
6:09 it’s a bit off topic, but literally I have the same box at home with red cover. That’s strange because I have it for 16 years already :)
yeah, the box you saw is about the same age
maybe you could get a pair of trouser braises to clip the mic to just call the metal ali
Maybe time to bring back the shirt pocket? :)
3:38 technically they're called "snaps" in english
Press studs ...
poppers
Yeah Mom! And there should be no comments on how to say that light metal as both are correct but have now been decided to be that Aluminium is more proper. Just because I'm an american does not always make me right, just mostly LOL.
I don`t know why they called the brand Røde, it means Red in Norwegian. I know the way you say oil in German, or oehl, if yoy try to say Rode with that sound it would be right after my opinion.
Nice setup btw! Have en Panasonic camera too.
3:37 "snap fasteners" or most people would just say "snaps". One of those great, or not great, English words that can be both a noun and verb (both come from the sound they make, which is also "snap"): "Marius snaps the snaps on his cloth microphone holder" or "Marius snapped the snaps on his cloth microphone holder" or "Marius closed the snaps..." or "Marius fastened the snaps" and "Marius unsnapped the snaps..." or "Marius unfastened the snaps..." I don't think many people would use "open the snaps" but perhaps that's just me.
And for bonus points, words that come from the sound they make are called onomatopoeic - I love that word :)
Its the aluminati!
Ium is the standard in my book. It's not radum, uranum, calcum, thorum, etc.
It seems I have enough chest hair to wear it inside.
"It holds the mic tight...", you should make a t-shirt called "mike tight, son"
A-lew-minium and Aluminum are not the same. A-lew-minium is designed to be measured in metric.
wat?
It's also a little bit thicker
@@henryD9363 .. but not quite as dense :P
What - no outtakes? 😉
Cool.bit...
*The audio was never a problem as far as I could tell.*
True. But gotta admit it's now even better. Without a doubt.
Well, there is an element called Aluminium, never seen and an element called Aluminum.
Sorry, couldn't resist, I think you should use whatever you're comfortable with.
5:40 So I have a question... Was ist es auf deutsch? :-)
I have fallen in love with German people.
How about hiding it behind a tie?
The audio is much better.
A grey safety tie :)
Hol dir besser noch son Lavaliermikrofon, dann musst du zwar ein Kabel unterm Shirt verstecken aber der Sender sitzt dann bequem in der Tasche und das superleichte superdiskrete Mikrofon stört nicht so sehr.
RØDE is pronounced as röde in German (Sort of. The the d is softer.. The German rö sound followed by the English "the", so rö-the). Also "Ah-looh-mee-num" is American English. Aluminium is Commonwealth English.
Aaaand RØDE is pronounced any way you like... Some Australians figured it would look cool in their name, but had no idea that it had a defined sound.... splendid!
The buttons are called press studs 😊
Thanks!
@@MariusHornberger That may be the proper name, but everyone calls them "snaps".
Huh, you wanna fight? I'll start in Finnish! Alumiini!
Pretty sure it's Aluminati; it's always Aluminati.
In Russian it will be Aluminij in transcription from Cyrillic.
I think the discussion is Finished
So, you did Finnish it.
I think you just need to sew a top pocket to your t-shirt to hold the microphone
Why not make a sort of necklace for the microphone? It would be hidden and it wouldn't deform your shirts :)
6:35 You should put a sticker on the vice and say "What a great ad-vice"
I've been doing that for over 40 years. It's something you learn the first time you cut a bolt and then can't thread a nut back on it or can't thread it into a bracket.
Yes it Is uluminium.
3:14 your English is excellent and much better than my German (2 years in highschool!). Please don't be offended, but the word "sew" is pronounced "so" and not "sue". 👍🏼
Oh, thanks for that correction
so its like kansas and arkansas. the one thing tha is consistent in the english language is the inconsistency
@@Ginkoman2 thank God the spelling is consistent
glad nobody sued you for that 😂
Может лучше было выбрать активные наушники с микрофоном?
I was wondering could you clip your microphone on the back of your neck on your T-shirtif if your mic could pick up your voice perhaps that would be a good idea
Some people say TomAto some people say TomaRto, I say Tomotoe!. You should really put some Festool on your wishlist.
I could, but since it's so expensive, nobody would buy it
There are wall mountable microphones...
