Because you can bet your life that if the 4080 was $750 even $800 bucks, AMD Would have to drop their prices to the Floor to make sales this generation. RDNA3 just cant scale to higher frequencies because of the power rerquirements to send data over the ~15x longer distance to the now external cache. Every bit transfered now costs an order of magnatide more power to get to and from the L3 cache.
    Edit: I'm not saying get rid of the external cache, i'm saying make it an L4 that doesnt see as much total bandwidth requirements, a buffer between the L3 and VRAM.
    Make the 7900XTX 15% larger, and add at least 48MB of L3.
    Hopefully at some point they can use a stacked cache, and at that point having external cache could in theory be faster than on-die cache.
    Above each CU there could be an entire pool of combined L2/L3 the size of the CU for say 4MB/CU that has a more durect connection, somewhat like L1

    on ray tracing, its interesting that everyone thinks NV is better than AMD when the code is optimized for NV and not AMD. it turns out 50% performance is left on the AMD table because devs are only coding for NV. the gap would be a lot smaller if it was optimized for both. AMD is failing because they dont have enough eng devs going out to companies doing their work for them I guess. I think that turns around pretty quick here as NV moves further from the gaming space and their chips are less and less geared towards the gaming space. AMD just needs to allocate a lot more funding to getting software devs on the same page, create wrappers to do the most common tasks, AMD just needs to hire a lot more software teams I guess Im saying.

    I care about the heat generated but not about the power consumed. If there was some magic to make power not directly equal to heat, I'd rock a 600W card no problem if it had the performance to back it. Plus, far more people want the performance than the efficiency. IMO, stock have the card give the performance and let the people who want the efficiency, enable it with the driver.

The 7800xt will see price cuts by the end of the year, bundle deals etc. And that will all be down from 500$. @PineyJustice Theres no benchmarks other than what amd showed off vs a 4070. Take that with a grain of salt. A 6800xt already beats a 4070 also just barely and its $500 now. At $650 a 7800xt with less CUs than a 6800xt would be doa. A 7900 gre has 20 more CUs and is around 15% to 20% faster vs a 6800xt. So a 7800xt with 20 less CUs you figure it out. AMD is not doing anyone any favors. Priced any higher a 7800xt would have been a joke.

The RDNA2 cards use about 30% more power than they report. In addition, the 6800xt isn't 500$, they're actually selling for 530$ to 550$ right now on newegg, limited quantity flash sale prices don't really count, nor does some bottom of the barrel powercolor fighter model that's going to die in a year.

    Would it have been possible for AMD to have the 7800 XT priced at 400 and still be able to make a profit? Yes, I believe so.
    Is the 7800 XT going to be an amazing deal at 500 USD in 2023? I don't think so. Does it suck that incomes haven't kept pace, on average, with the rate of inflation? Yes, absolutely. Is that AMD's fault? Maybe a little bit, but for the most part, no, I don't think so. Does it suck that AMD is trying to push us into buying an upper mid-range card by basically not designing any lower mid-ranged card that they could sell for a good price? Yes, though you could argue that they are still offering a good lower-mid-ranged option in the discounted 6700 XT for around 330 USD.
    The 6700 XT launched at a bloated MSRP of 480 USD two and a half years ago in early 2021, so it's admittedly not that impressive to offer a significant improvement in value over that pricing. However, even if the 6700 XT had launched at 400, which is probably close to what it was originally planned to launch at, inflation has been a lot higher than normal in the past three years, and 400 back in early 2021 is equivalent to about 450 USD today. The 7800 XT at 500 USD today is thus about 11% more expensive than that fictitious but very reasonable launch price of 400 in early 2021, but it looks to also be around 40-45% faster, has 33% more Vram, and has additional improvements and features which come with the new architecture. As such, that's at LEAST a 33% improvement in value per dollar. I'm hopeful that the 7800 XTs will have better quality coolers than the average 6700 XT did, because a lot of those were very mediocre at best, including the reference model.
    Of course, the 7800 XT won't offer anywhere near a 33% improvement in value per dollar over the CURRENT pricing of previous gen Radeon cards, but you can't expect a new generation card to offer a significant improvement in value vs. cost over discounted previous gen cards which ALREADY offer a very significant improvement in value because of their discounts from the launch MSRP pricing. It's very normal for prices of previous gen cards to come way down before new generation cards are launched, this is nothing new.
    Unless the performance numbers shown by AMD are very inaccurate, the 7800 XT is going to be offering a significant improvement in performance per dollar, and value, over previous generation products, and offering a very competitive value against the RTX 4070, which is probably the best value product that Nvidia is currently offering right now. Will the 7800 XT sell as well as they want it to at 500? Probably, I think, but I don't actually know. We'll have to wait and see. If enough people just don't buy any new cards, then prices will eventually have to be dropped, that's for sure, and that's a totally reasonable and viable strategy if you don't like the pricing.

    • @Mopantsu
      @Mopantsu Рік тому

      TBH Nvidia does have the superior product. It does everything better including its feature set using less power. Can't argue with it other than price and lack of VRAM. If they 4070 had been 16Gb instead of 12Gb I could even argue that 600 dollars would be justified.

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism Рік тому +1

      I can't believe that Paul is seriously arguing that the 7800 XT should be 400 USD. I mean, maybe I'm wrong, and maybe that price would have actually make a lot of sense for AMD, but I doubt it. It certainly would have generated a ton of interest, but such a price should never come at the cost of significantly sacrificing the quality of the cooler. Cooler quality has been getting a lot better, on average, over the past few generations, and that has been a very good trend, though they do go overboard sometimes with over-engineered (and often very overpriced) models. If you're putting together a new PC, you can put together an entire system (minus the keyboard, mouse, and monitor) for a very reasonable price, and spending 500 USD on a 7800 XT will be well worth it for a lot of people, and (if you adjust for inflation) the cost of the system as a whole is still going to be very reasonable compared to what PCs cost 5, 10, or 15 years ago.
      In the scenarios where the RTX 4070 is going to be able to get its biggest ray tracing wins over the 7800 XT, the performance is still going to be hit really hard on the 4070 as well, or many other settings will need to be turned down to compensate, at which point you're no longer getting a significant improvement in overall image quality. As games get more demanding, it will become decreasingly realistic or practical to expect to be able to run anything more than light-ray tracing, if any, and an RTX 4070 is not likely to have any significant advantage over a 7800 XT with light ray tracing settings, especially with software lumen, which is an extremely efficient and competitive method of ray tracing in terms of the image quality you get relative to the performance cost. The fact that ray tracing also uses more Vram is also a problem for the 4070, because it obviously doesn't have as much to spare. DLSS is better than FSR currently is, but is that worth paying 100 USD more and losing 4GB of Vram? No, especially if FSR on RDNA3 ends up getting closer to the image quality of DLSS, which does seem like a distinct possibility, though you certainly shouldn't count on it yet either. It's not like you actually need to always use upscaling, and running without any upscaling at all is ultimately preferable to running with upscaling, except (arguably) on 4k resolutions or higher. The 12GB of Vram on the 4070 is definitely going to become an increasingly limiting factor in an increasing number of games over the next 3-4 years, which is how long most people who buy a 4070 or 7800 XT are likely to use the card before upgrading it again.

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism Рік тому

      @@Mopantsu There are already some games TODAY which require more than 12GB of Vram at 1440p, such as Ratchet and Clank, which is very clear if you test a 3080 ti vs. a 3090. A 4070 can only get about 44 FPS at very high settings with RT on in Ratchet and clank at 1440p, but it could get closer to 60 FPS if it had 16GB of Vram. A 4070 is only able to beat a 16GB 4060 ti by 1 FPS (with the same 1% lows) in that game at 1440p as well. That's not a huge deal for that game, because you can use DLSS, which doesn't reduce image quality by that much, and I'm pretty sure that reduces the Vram usage enough, but it's a sign of things to come. Over time, it will become increasingly more limiting, and will likely also make some mods for a lot of games completely un-usable, if you care about modding. You don't want to be worrying about Vram, and you don't want textures to sometimes not be loading in, or for performance to start tanking randomly at certain points of a game without knowing why it's happening. It's not a huge deal, but it definitely affects the value and will affect the longevity of the card. If the 4070 had been 450 or lower, it would be a lot harder to complain about it.
      The 4070 at 100 USD more with 33% less Vram is a better choice? You think it's worth paying an additional 100 USD for better upscaling quality and better ray tracing performance, but less Vram? The ray tracing performance is going to very often be very similar, and in situations where the 4070 has the biggest ray tracing advantage is also where the performance cost is still going to be very high even for the 4070.
      Software Lumen also works just as well on AMD hardware, and potentially better, considering that AMD cards (usually) give you more Vram for equal or less money.

As we’ve seen this entire GPU generation from AMD and Nvidia, nobody’s buying as they did their purchasing during Covid with work or study from home and there’s no value in upgrading for what’s being offered at current price points. Also as we’re seeing, it’s only higher end gpus this generation which are able to get by in newer titles due to a more intense graphical demand.

    Amd have horrendous prices now. 😂 A shitty mb more than 180 usd. A 6 core at 300 at launch. An $1000 6800xt replacement. I'm not buying anything this gen anyways but next one I'll be watching closer the Intel/Nvidia stuff.
    Also, props for fixing that mic finally 😁

    I will say it for the 1000th time...AMD came up with a cheaper process just to then increase margins...Nvidia, pricy as they be, atleast tried to sell me a new feature set. AMDs marketing department is just completely out of touch and its so bad that I personally consider Intel over AMD. Nvidia releases cards at 400-500 bucks that do the most demanding title currently at 90FPS with good visuals, max setting and RT, meanwhile AMD goes whoopsie doopsie...

    I am surprised you are seeing the light. I am not afraid to call out AMD, you buy there GPUs and end up becoming an engineer to get them to work properly. The 5700xt is there best card imo, the power performance on that little sucker can give you ultra 1080p and medium 1440p for less than 150 US dollars. I am not about to waste money on these new junks, embrace the old and save the money.

      Get rid of Lisa Su? Seriously?! XD
      AMD's PR and marketing in general is weak, I agree with that, but the 7800 XT looks to be the best value improvement over previous gen graphics cards of the current generation. It looks to be a very well rounded graphics card, offering about a 40-45% improvement over the performance of the 6700 XT, 33% more Vram, and a variety of other improvements and features over the previous generation, for an MSRP which is, after adjusting for inflation, lower than the launch MSRP of the 6700 XT.
      Inflation is real, and has been a lot higher than normal over the past three years, whether you like it or not, and you can't blame AMD for average income not keeping pace with inflation.

    Paul, just because you don't know how to configure it doesn't make what you are saying true.
    Configuring it is different from previous generations, but having found out how, it is quite easy to do, and I would teach you how to do it, but you have me blocked.
    There is one thing that I have found out which is a VALID criticism, but there again, you don't want to know valid criticisms, you just want to make shit up.
