First start of the Detroit Diesel in the boat
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 жов 2024
- In this video I bolt up the prop shaft flange and start the Detroit Diesel for the first time in the boat. Before I can do this, however, I need to connect the morse cables, fabricate a bracket for the throttle cable, supply power to the starter motor, and attach the exhaust outlet.
Once the engine starts I have trouble with it stalling due to air in the fuel lines from the boat's fuel tanks (I presume), but I'll investigate that in more detail in the next video.

I often find when people complain that somthing is taking too long have never actually done a job like this temsleves. All of these little jobs allways take more time than expected, keep plugging away Stu, you're on the home stretch.
People live in an instant gratification mode these days. It's hard to get people to focus longer than 5 minutes.
Too right!
Such people should have been watching Project Binky from the start.
@@Dave5843-d9m It'll be interesting to see how long the reassembly takes them.
I cant imagine someone complaining about your time line. I think it's moving along nicely for a guy that's doing the lions share. If the work by yourself. Crazy. Makes me wonder if those that complain have ever done a project of this scope.
Some people are impatient and have short attention spans. Life is a marathon not a race.
no some people havent got a clew so just complain cause they dont understand life
He is doing it so thoroughly, by the book and not cutting corners.
I would (sarcastically) start calling him “the shonk”. Totally legit Aussie humour :)
@@rodneylee4026 the marathon IS a race though. Did you mean : life is a Marathon, not a 100m sprint ?
@@cartouchator Hahaha, yeah that works
apparently people don't know how long a job like this takes you do have a life other than the boat. And a well deserved break always helps. Great job keep up the good work.
Stu I literally just lost my shit!! When you dropped the nut and then dropped the screw and went f.... cut the video...if that isn't completely relatable to anyone that works on their own stuff then I don't know what is! You kill me man! Good stuff
Bankhead_662 that was quality editing there, still family friendly but we all know exactly what just happened
When I worked in yacht construction (65 footer) and I had to take a bunch of bolts down into the engine room, I always took a couple extra "for the bilge".
At least it fell into the bilge. Most of my one of a kind thingys fall over board.
Bankhead_662 , are you sure that this wasn't a set up, it was too funny. 😂
Magnet on a stick. Indispensable but I’m always misplacing mine. :-(
It's ALIVE...It's ALIVE!!!! Stu...this is awesome. Treasure hunting with your own ship is finally right around the corner.
Thanks Fred!
When you hit the starter I was sitting on the couch smiling like a kid at Christmas, major milestone, well done
Thanks for the great video Stu. I can only imagine having to work on the motor and moving the camera around at the same time. And then all the trolls criticize how you do things. You’re are straight up guy.
" a suitable UN-BAFFLED muffler..." Right choice Stu! Gotta love a detroit's rumble
un baffled does not mean the same as silenced muffler. They make them for narrowboats in the uk. I think its just some steelwool around the outside that somehow absorbs some of the noise with a stainless shield over that with lots of holes. Does not restrict flow at all.
@@jacilynns6330 i understand its a packed muffler it was just a joke. Tractor mufflers are un baffled as well. Baffles can cause backpressure on turbocharged engines, and 2 strokes where scavenging is required to draw air in/out
Oh..that great feeling you get on the first real start up.the smell of the new paint and oil burning while you crack open the first celebration beer . Congratulations .
Love the chickens at the end... Great work with Detroit, always 2 steps forward, 1 back... That's just the way it goes.... It looks ultra smart for a old fishing boat...
Glad you had a break, we are not robots, look after yourself. That exhaust bubble though, it's like music. Beautiful.
Cool cooks in the rain forest. My dad years ago rebuilt and marinised an old Perkins p4 diesel and I got in the way, at age 8 ...that was my job!........I'm 60 now .
How I understand you, my friend... That feeling, beeing 90% done and it seems it will never end... I'm feeling the same with my boat restoration. The time, the money, it seems like nothing is getting done. But you know what? I'm doing a 12 hour shift right now, from 00 to 12:00, with the corona virus everywhere, not having the time to do anything, to finish the damn boat. So, my friend, drink a cold one, focus on one thing at a time, realize the wonderful life you have, screw all the rest and in no time you will be riding those waves. Cheers!
Just moved to Germany for work from the States. Was working 9 hours a day and dealing with 3 kids and having to walk all over everywhere for food, etc. Ended up catching the flu and bedridden for a week. Best rest I’ve had in weeks.
@Rene Drew AHAHAHAA! The Corona HOAX.
We All Should be more worried Acid Rain an Ice Age destroying Our happy Flacid Existence, hell I can't go fishing in the frozen Seas. Wakey Wakey Knumbnuts?
@@jonoedwards4195 Yep the sheep wont understand what you are talking about as they listen to the constant lies coming out from the mainstream media and political parties that are all owned and controlled by the Vatican/Rothschilds/Queen etc MAFIA who want to bring in a One World Government COMMUNIST Dictatorship that George Orwell was warning about in his book 1984. Got to keep up the totally FAKE debt/austerity, terrorism, global warming/climate change, virus pandemics drivel to scare the sheep into allowing their NWO agenda come to pass. The Coronavirus is just simply the COMMON COLD and look at the dafties all over the world panicking about it. Google Paisley Expressions and the Jesus, Hitler and Wizard of Oz post on there just now exposing how we have always been getting lied to on behalf of this agenda.
I second the comment about the 3 gpm lift pump. They don't cost a lot but bring a lot of value. You can wire it to an off-run-start keyed switch so it runs when the engine is running. It will help a lot as you try to get the air out of the system after servicing the fuel filters as well.
Keep up the good work. You're closer every day.
What a great moment to hear that diesel come to life and kick her into gear. Best to you from Virginia, Stu. I've been keeping up with Scott too on their new property in Tennessee.
Just watching his driveway grading now. :)
It’s alive! There’s nothing like the sound of a Detroit firing up to start the day. Good work.
Who doesnt like the sound of a diesel.
Sounds good.
Watching you working in the hole makes my knees and back hurt.
I think this series illustrates very nicely how much effort, time , and money it takes to rebuild an old boat. Not to mention filming the whole process. If people are complaining I think they should take a good hard look at themselves and decide if they would even attempt something like this let alone be capable of the dedication required to finish it at all. I expect they well find that they are unwilling to even make the attempt. It is easier to sit at a keyboard and complain with he benefit of complete anonymity. When this boat is complete it will be done properly and last for many decades. I think that is something you can and should take great pride in.
When the Detroit fired up, I smiled deeply. What a relief n a bit of motivation. Hang in there. You're on the last lap.
Regarding the fuel delivery issue, double check your connections for tightness and make sure your tank is vented properly. As far as the timeline goes, the complainers wont be offshore with a dead engine watching a storm roll in. Take your time and do it right.
So glad I didn’t watch this straightaway when the notification came through. Now that we’re in lock down over here this is the perfect time to watch it. Cheers!
Enoy. :)
That's a tidy engine room you're building there. Love the Capt. Cousteau print in the bridge. I spent many hours as a wee sprouge watching his undersea adventures. Fair winds and following seas mate.
God forbid that a man mite do something the way he wants to do it or at the speed that pleases himself,,, keep up the good work and Thxs again for the videos,,, I like them just the way they are,,, Thxs again, gb
No kidding!
Amen brother.
Great video, especially the swear. I am a retired 20 year US Navy Sailor and the f bomb is part of our regular vocabulary. Great work still on the boat!
I must say I so admire of your work as a mechanic
I can't believe how excited I am to see someone else's boat fire up.
It's not funny, not even a little bit, but I laughed when the the nylon washers went deep. It was just a perfect example of every project I have ever done. Love your vids, enjoying the progress. Keep it up.
Great to hear it run and spin the prop. Your getting there.
She's really coming along skipper. Lots of little things to do but important. Make your to do lists and get ready for shake down. So good to hear her heart come to life in its proper place. Steady as she goes.
...congrats on the firing up of your power plant..it helps to stop and smell the roses every once in a while...great vid..
Diesel*
as to those complaining it's taking you too long, i'm gonna be sad when you're done. i've enjoyed this build.
I've ran into the low fuel supply issue before. I like putting a 2 to 3 psi electric fuel pump in the line when you have multiple pre filters on an older system. I would say it is air, but it would also fix flow issue you were talking about addressing later. Congratulations on the first start up in the boat. That deserves a beer!
Watching you with the exhaust pipe and remembering the transmission removal from the engine. I solved some of the frustration of working alone by creating a whole mess of bolts that are long enough to have a un-threaded bit of a couple of inches with the heads cut off and a slotted screw cut in. then I can screw two in and slide the part off or on with support without having to have 3 arms. Great bunch of videos.
Congratulations on getting the engine running! That is a major milestone!
Rick D here (name/channel change)I haven’t been here as long as most have but I’ve been here since about 40,000 subscribers. All stated when I looked up impeller how videos. Got hooked on the green machine project, binged as many other of your videos as I possibly could (pretty sure I’ve goresn through 90%) and have been watching every week since. You do such a great job with your videos and even tho personally I’m not a huge trawler fan I still can’t wait for the new video each week. Keep up the great work and thank you for the content. You have a gift sir
Thanks mate. I appreciate you watching along all this time. :)
We pulled a 671 detroit diesel from an old brockway big rig rebuilt it top and bottom end placed it in a 175 Michigan loader adding an extra two hundred horsepower supercharged clockwise engine . Did it have a big bucket as it overloaded trailor dumps with two scoops . Ran great for years and years !
"Found it. Ah, fu-"
Oh, that hit hard. Been there so many times.
A really big moment - the Detroit is ticking over - fantastic!!. Take all the time in the world to do things well Stu - it's your boat!
Love your pace. Also love to hear some of your deliberations leading up to decisions about one or the other technical solutions. Soldier on. From Denmark with love.
Thanks Jan!
The light at the end of the endless tunnel has shown itself in all its glory, be aware dont look it at for to long it can cause temporary blindness so it suggested to keep your head down and moving with brief intervals of contemplation and thinking how nice it will be to of the tunnel. Hats of to you mate, mammoth project.
I’m seriously impressed how nicely the old lady runs - really sounded nicely. Keep up the good work and looking forward for the first run up or down the river 😊
Stu, I was as happy as you looked after first start up! Actually, I couldn't tell how happy you must have been from your facial expression, but I am rooting for you all the same.
Nice video as usual, thanks for sharing.
17:30 - 18:00 is the most honest and relatable content in the history of UA-cam.
I can relate to hitting the wall......I built a boat under my carport, at one point I thought easier to get a cup of petrol and a box of matches. Took a few weeks off and then made a pact with myself to do one task a day on the boat even if it was cut a piece of ply or lay one area of glass. That did the job, finished the boat after 3.5 years and put many hours happily fishing on it.
So satisfying to hear this run again. Great work Stu!
Congratulations Stu, nice to hear it running in the boat.
Take your time Stu! This is a great project for us to watch and enjoy with you. There is no rush from our end!
IT LIVES!
This old fishing trawler has come so far from what it was when you first got a hold of it. I hope it serves you well, or whoever you decide to sell it to. I think you should keep it though, all the backbreaking work you've done, you deserve to enjoy it!
And take your time. Stuff like this isn't easy work, if they were in your position they might understand that.
Definitely planning to keep it. :)
@@DangarMarine Glad to hear! Any plans on what you'll use it for if not just fishing?
@My Account I have watched past episodes (since the first, actually), but I must've missed the one where he discussed his plans for Renko. YT notifications haven't been too reliable for me for some reasons.
@My Account Sounds like a good way to use it.
Work hardening only really happens when the material is flexing. If your throttle control flexes a 5mm thick aluminum bracket, you have way bigger problems than replacing $2 worth of scrap aluminum. I wonder if people who offer advice have ever built anything before.
yeah not even close. its going to corrode to dust before anything else...
actually it depends on the aluminum alloy. Some it only takes two bends at less than thirty degrees to break away.
@@jacilynns6330 Still, will a throttle bracket ever see that much load to bend it anywhere close to 30 degrees?
@Jacilynn S even if you bought the cheapest hardware store grade aluminum it would still take a lot more to break. I LOL’d so hard when I heard the work harden comment, so many steel fanboys out there.
noted the remark about making it out of steel later, good progress!
It's been a pleasure to watch the transformation of this vessel from a worn down and tired hulk to something truly remarkable. I know there is plenty more things that need to be done, but you can see that the light at the end of the tunnel is within sight. I enjoy watching the progress every week and know that this a labor of love. I hope this boat gives you many years of service and enjoyment.
Congrats on the first start Stu. Sounds great. Always gonna be bugs to be worked out. Thanks for taking us along on your awesome build.
So glad the prop turned. Great work.
Stu,I’m starting to believe that the stress and hard work ,with the never ending cost of this project is starting to take a toll on you my friend.take care of yourself and get some time off.love the videos, you really put out great videos.
Yes, it certainly is taking it's toll, but the finish line is so close now. :)
Your timeline is just fine, keep going forward! 😃
Nothing sounds Like a DD..Distinctive and sounds like a well balanced power plant. Looking good Stu, never mind the naysayers, your boat your time your life..3.5 thousands Thumbs up means something !!
Congrats Stu! The moment you started the motor. That is a big step.
This may sound strange. I find your videos lately to be the only ones I actually watch. Most videos i put on and do something at the same time. I am really enjoying the trawler updates. Thanks.
Thanks mate, glad you've been enjoying.
Great to see the Detroit start up. Keep up the chook inclusion at the end also, our pug loves watching it. About the Alloy bracket-I work in the aerospace industry with aluminium and I assure you it will corrode to dust long before it cracks in the salt environment.
Im really looking forward to seeing you motoring around the bay
God help me I do love the drone of a diesel inboard on a boat. Stu you are a tall glass of cool water on a hot day !!
Greetings from west coast Canada. Well there you go Stu, that should shut a lot of people up. Well done man I am surprisingly really excited for you. It is kind of weird to think there all people all over the planet pumping out positive energy to you. Best of luck to you.
Impressive how quick it started and how smoothly it ran. Purred like a kitten!
Yes, these Detroits fire up very quickly.
just a note to say love the videos I have been watching from the beginning, and also the chickens at the end are always welcome form my pint of view lol. keep up the good work.
Congrats ! ! !
PS: The really good thing about steel comes when you decide to stretch the boat 2 or 3 meters... easy.
Yes, I have been seriously thinking about that. It will never bet. A big boat but a few extra metres would make a huge difference.
@@DangarMarine Well, you know the boat inside-out so you'd know if it's worth it. Plus, the technology for design Is advancing phenomaly fast: photogrammetry

Three eggs and a running engine - made my day Stu!
Hey Stu just a quick hint from an old exhaust fitter about the maniseal i loosen the lid and squeeze it until the air comes out then rub it between your hands, this also adds a bit of heat as you mix it cheers Steve
Getting there Stu. The pinprick of light at the end of the tunnel is gradually growing larger. Just keep on keeping on Stu & the rewards will keep happening.
So nice to hear it running in your boat!! Well done!
Good on you Stu. I've been with you the whole journey; you get it done when you bloody well get it done. No rush. Time, money and motivation all factor in.
You have the best videos the only channel I watch every episode all the way threw. I don’t care if it takes 100 more videos let’s do this 👍
Jeez, the beautiful sound of that Diesel humming along. Great job of restoration on that engine Stu, be proud. You are getting very close to chugging around the bay in your newly renovated trawler! Your perseverance will be paying dividends then.
there is pipe plug at the ends of the fuel rail in the head, which you can prime with a pump oil can filled with diesel. you have to fabricate an adapter on the oil can to fit the pipe thread. makes fuel system prime much easier.
Congrats on your first start and progress!
One step closer.Your almost there.Engine sounded fine.Keep up the Good Work.....
Keep up the good work stu. Good things come to those who wait.
Making due with the three hands we've got . It's always the one in the middle that drops everything after 12 beers for me . When I wake up the next day the middle hand is nowhere to be found . LOL Great Job Man working all of that by yourself ! Beers needed for sure on this occasion !👍👍👍
Excellent episode Stu, very exciting so see life returning to the trawler!
It's ALIVE. In most spookiest voice.
Sounds good too. Good to look after the inner man too mate. The break away was just the ticket.
Fantastic!! Great to see how easy the start was as well. Certainly getting things sorted now. Who cares how long it takes, you work at your speed and get the job done properly.
As they say "slowly; slowly catchy monkey". well done Stu, should be a great relief for you to hear that Detroit ticking over in the boat. I, for one, am enjoying watching it all slowly advancing to completion and it will take as long as it takes, thanks for sharing cheers buddy
I popped open a Lone Star when you fired up that sweet Dee-troit. Greetings from Texas.
Looks like you got some new lighting in the workshop... Nice and bright. Great to hear to motor running in the boat. Cheers.
Awesome! So glad you were able to start it up! I'm sure you are really looking forward to wrapping up this project. Kind of a sad day though for all of your viewers, it has been such a great journey you have taken us on! Really looking forward to what you are going to be using it for! Great job, stay well! Cheers!
Progress is progress, no matter how small !
Congratulations, Nothing quite the same feeling as first start after all the time and hard work.
Great Job Stu!!! Proud to finally hear that Detroit roar to life!!!!
Absolutely lost it at dropping the nyloc twice Hahahaha boy have I done that before with the same reaction and more expletives. Love the work Stu
Watching this again after watching the second rebuild. Im no doctor, but she sounds better the second time around.
Don't know what people are complaining about. I'm a bit sad already since we're so close to it all being done and this amazing series ending. Not that I'm not exited to see the future content but this has been a great journey. People need to understand that doing thing in real life takes much longer than on a video.
Another great video, congratulations for the first start in the boat! Don’t care about some folks, we are not worry about you going slow or fast, you do what yo have to do and we love it. Cheers mate!
It's no wonder you're exhausted and needed a break being you been traveling around the country. Worked your butt up at Brupeg. The engine sounds extremely sweet, started right away. You got lots of little quirks to work out. Doing a great job with the boat and the chickens.
Love the work that has been done Stu
sounds great
Maybe put a label stating 19mm wrench on the shelf where it is stored because it is tucked halfway hidden.
That 19mm spanner is gonna be his version of the famous 10mm socket placed there once never to be seen again 😂😂
That 19mm spanner will be the most used tool on the boat, finding that sweet spot between dripping too much and too slowly will be a never ending task. I am predicting that a future project will be called "Changing the stern gland seal for a mechanical seal"
People have been shouting advice at their TV's for decades with no response, then one day they discover YT and can post comments, it's their dream come true !
People who complain about how long things take really have no idea of what it is you are doing and under what circumstances.
Everybody else just enjoys seeing how the boat is coming along and realise that trying to rush the job won't be very successful.
Congratulatiosn. It sounds fine. You now have a boat and can go places.
Unfortunately there is a fair bit to do until the boat is usable but it's getting close now.
Awesome to hear the engine fire up stu! What an achievement, good to hear that the prop shaft spun as it should. Glad you had some time off aswell, you needed it! No one that matters wants you to change anything you do, we subscribed because we like watching stu do things stus way. Keep it up mate! Loving the content👍
Looking good, people don’t understand it takes time to rebuild something.30 second sound bits are the real world.
That was good to see, all looks good painted engine, engine bay, well done
