I often wonder why band directors don't program Clifton Williams' music more often today. This is such a fine piece of writing, as is all of Williams catalogue. I do know that many of his pieces were available only by rental in the eighties and nineties, thereby making them harder to obtain for many schools. In my time as a band director I often adjudicated festivals, and in my years of hearing bands I only heard one performance of a Clifton Williams piece at a festival. I guess many directors consider the style to be out of date, but I find it powerful, beautifully written for all the sections, and challenging to any ensemble. If you are a director, think of programing one of his beautiful pieces, you will be glad, and so will your band!
I’m first chair euphonium for my high schools wind ensemble, and we’re playing this soon, for our concert, and ironically, it’s my sophomore year too 😂

i still remember my days as a clarinetist for high school band, playing this as a sophomore not too long ago
