  • Throughout their 52-year marriage, Nancy Reagan was President Ronald Reagan's staunchest supporter. But one of the great mysteries is that a woman who was so attuned to and protective of her husband's public image could be unaware of her own. "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl talks with Washington Post columnist Karen Tumulty, author of the new book "The Triumph of Nancy Reagan," and with former Reagan White House chief of staff James Baker, about the complicated persona of the woman who had the most significant influence on President Reagan.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion - but yours is uneducated. Unfortunately I had to live through this in person, and she was absolutely none of the things in your list, other than shrewd. And he was no better, even making a deal with terrorists. They were simply awful. Don't believe me? Ask any of their children.

@@mrsj1417 Well, I respect the fact that you think that, but I am a historian, so I would say that my perspective is an extremely educated one, particularly considering that I have read extensively about the Reagans, from all perspectives, because I find them absolutely fascinating. When we live through experiences, as you have, often we tend to react emotionally and viscerally. However, when we are removed, as I am, having been born in the 1990's, we often have a more objective point-of-view. When I first started studying the Reagan presidency, I was skeptical and did not like many of Reagan's policies. However, the more I studied them, the more I realized just how impactful the example of their marriage was. They were complicated, yes, and they had a great deal of baggage. But they really "completed each other," as President Reagan said. I believe that wholeheartedly. Yes, as you say, their family relationships were strained, but as their daughter, Patti, said in her eulogy for her mother, they had such a close relationship that there wasn't room for many other people. I would not like to emulate that particular aspect of their love, one that is so exclusive, but I do think that devotion is something we all should strive to achieve. Theirs was a marriage of utter devotion. Of course, I weigh the pros and cons of their lives, but I appreciate that they had each other and made each other so happy. As for their children, both Patti and Ron had very close relationships with both of their parents by the end of their lives.

Ronald treated his daughter Mermie, horribly. He was a lousy father who allowed his eldest child to chase after and practically beg for his love. While he did some effective things in leadership roles, he seemed incredibly one dimensional in many ways, a sad life for such an accomplished man.

It gets worse: Reagan ignored his children from his marriage to Jane Wyman; Maureen had to announce to Patti that they were sisters. When Mermie confronted their dad, he told her that they just had not gotten around to telling Patti, who was probably ten, that she had older siblings. Mermie loved him dearly, desperately chasing him for love but he repeatedly rebuffed, avoided her, treating her as an inconvenience.
