    • @telegramsam

      @@-belue-6697 it means only the results matter. like how good your pudding is, you find out by eating it. and that’s it. Not how you cook it or what it looks like. the phrase has gotten mangled over the years, like “putting the horse before the cart” (i.e. valuing the horse greater than the goods you are using it to pull - having your priorities backwards) being turned around into “putting the cart before the horse” which I guess people are thinking about where the cart physically goes wrt the horse rather than the value.

  • @ginnyjollykidd

    Very legitimate rant. Not only has this guy told you the idiom the wrong way, the word proof is also used in cooking. Proofing is allowing a food rise, like a yeast bread, a souffle, or a pudding.
    The proper idiom is, "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." So there is the other meaning of proof--the result of the test is good.
    So this idiom really says don't rely on theory when you can see the evidence for yourself.
    What this guy was really saying is that, lucky or not, he was scoring.

  • @TheMzV
    @TheMzV 11 років тому +1

    It's a corruption of the adage,
    "The proof of the pudding is in the eating,"
    which basically means that the quality of something is uncertain until it has been tested directly, sort of like:
    "You don't know whether you like it until you've tried it."
    or:
    "I'll believe it when I see it."

    Some people should have googled harder... Wiki gives the origin:
    This proverb dates back at least to the 14th century... and William Camden stated it in 1605 in Remaines of a Greater Worke, Concerning Britaine as "All the proofe of a pudding, is in the eating", per Rogers' Dictionary of Cliche and the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.
    A 1682 translation of Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux Le Lutrin (written between 1672 and 1674) renders it "The proof of th' pudding's seen i' the eating."

    This guy misquoted the idiom. It is not "The proof is in the pudding" but instead is "The proof of the pudding is in the eating" which is often shortened to "The proof of the pudding." It means that to fully test something you have to experience it for yourself. It's a very old English idiom and refers to a traditional English pudding, a sausage-like dish. In the days before refrigeration, it was a good idea to sample the food before consuming it, in order to avoid food poisoning.

    It's an abbreviation of "The proof of the pudding is in the eating"- so basically you can tell how good a pudding is by tasting it- or, in other words- you can understand something's worth by experiencing it. In this case the guy was pointing out that even if he was just lucky, he was still beating you.
