    I've got a model 242B from the 30's that I inherited from my grandfather years ago and has served me well... the leather pump seal finally dried out all I had to do was oil it again and the thing is back in service. love these!

    in the early 60s we lived in wichita (mcconnell afb) and had neighbors who worked at coleman. we were invited to their pool/clubhouse once and eventually spent the entire summer there! they invited us daily and it so hospitable we couldn’t refuse. the coleman folks put out an incredible buffett spread and outfitted the entire grounds of their clubhouse with, of course, coleman products of every kind; tents, cots, sleeping bags, etc. i have never seen some again (excepting in mil) but it was a campers and outdoorsmans dream world! everything coleman made was on display and most actually in use. lighting, heating, cooking all done with coleman. at dusk out came the lanterns that light the pool, walkways, even the main entrance at times and at Holidays - what a cookouts and gatherings there were at coleman. great memories...

    I have a mint Coleman Kero that I can pressurize with new fuel and new mantles but nothing is coming out to burn. I want to say it’s a 221 but just now I can’t remember yet will be at home tomorrow to find and rewatch this vid. Right now I can’t even have sound on so am watching without hearing the gems. I’m just 1/3 thru but want to say this is excellent.
    Also, I have to love a guy who is comfortable around kerosene and knows he can smoke without endangering hisself.

    Nice! I just got a '74 lantern for $20. Haven't had a chance to fire it up. Valves and cleaning lever were stiff but I got them to move freely. Seems to hold pressure on the pump and there's an extra pump and mantles stuffed inside. Looking forward to playing with it.

    I was told, that you can use a propane torch you sweat pipe with...and torch the generator... then drop it in cold water.. Repeat if you need to to get the ceramic/cardboard tube out.
    Also, torching it can help clean it. The older 'paper tubes' are ceramic type and can take the torch directly, but not the paper ones. (newer ones).
    I was told this from the oldcolemancollector forums.

    I have two Coleman dual fuel lanterns, a 295 model I've had for a good while which seems to work fine and I recently acquired a 290 model which is the one I'm having problems with. The issue is that I cannot seem to pressurize the tank and therefore it just doesn't light properly or if it does just about get going it soon stops!
    I reckoned that the likely issue was a loss of pressure at either the filler cap (losing pressure) or the pump end not working properly (not gaining pressure). To try to narrow things down with the parts being interchangeable between the lanterns I decided to swap the pump and the filler cap from the good lantern to the bad lantern to see if this cured it, if it did I could then work out which component was faulty.
    Yes, you've guessed, swapping these components, both of which must be good because they work on the other lantern, the second lantern will still not come up to pressure :-(
    Where do I go from here? Can you give me any advice, please?
    Thank you!

    I soaked the leather cup over night in 3 in 1 oil . I have a 1970 model 220F the model number is on the bottom as well as on the silver band around the middle of the lamp . So far its holding pressure, but I’m moving soon so I’m not sure if I want to start her up because the mantel’s become very fragile after you burn them. I like the older ones . These , I believe are duel fuel. Colman’s or unleaded gas .P.S. not smart smoking near flammable materials.

    Hi
    I am based in the UK. We don’t have a lot of Petrol lamps. The one I have was bought for me. It’s an old Coleman 335.
    I stripped it down after watching you doing it. I have lost the tip off the generator. Can I use a generator off a younger lamp as I can not get spares for old lamps here
    Most people use butane
    My friends are telling me to dispose of it. There telling me that if I use a different generator it will explode. Any advice would be welcomed
    I’ve sort of fallen in love with it
    Thanks

    • @SWPhotography
      @SWPhotography  6 років тому

      It can be a pain if it's stripped. A tool made for it ... one like this one.
      www.amazon.com/Coleman-Removal-Wrench-Professional-Lantern/dp/B01L7BMV7K
      will work sometimes cause the center bolt locks the tool in place. You can find them on Ebay or Amazon.
      If that doesn't work drill it and use a screw extractor.

    • @SWPhotography
      @SWPhotography  5 років тому +4

      Mike Cip yes or it just needs to be cleaned. One way to check is pull the generator and take it outside, pump it up a little and slowly open the valve. If gas comes out then it’s the generator, if not it’s the pickup tube.
