Just curious how you were able to fish the river I have been dreaming about all my life. I wish I could take my Father there before he passes. Nice video.
Haha lots of envy here:P nothing wrogn with fishing salmon with a onehander. His casting was ok, he got his fly in there. nothing wrogn about not casting 'perfect'. If u can aford to fish the Alta, good for you!:) the only thing i think was bad was that he did not kill it straigth away when he saw it was bleeding too much. Dont keep it alive for posing and such if you are going to kill it anyway. Other than that, well done. Nice fish
Great to see, but had you been using the correct tackle for big fish that fish might have lived. Lee Wulff started this american craze for using light tackle, but he treated his fish mean and still got em in quick. And imagine how many fish this guy would catch on a great river like Alta if he could cast?
He played that fish to death. The guides didn't guide. I was rooting for the fish to break off. Norwegians are also the biggest players in salmon aquaculture killing wild stocks in Bay of Fundy rivers. Real conservationists.
Just because it's a single handed rod doesn't mean it's a trout set up. You can tell from the footage there's real pressure being put on the fish. People use single handed rods for tarpon and all manner of big fish. A 10wt single handed rod is the norm for king salmon bigger than this. Assuming this is a 9wt or so, it's as good a fish fighting machine as a soft 15 footer. You can see he bends the rod way into the butt so he knows what he's doing.
Bigger reel, heavier drag and stronger leader would be more sporting. Lighter tackle does not equal better sportsmanship. Did I miss the reference or is there a kill and take fishery on this river? Fantastic setting and unbelievable resource.
Well, most of the posts below show either class envy, chauvinism, or stupidity. Mostly envy. Yes, most of us Salmon anglers would like to afford to fish the Alta and we'd probably all do it better (in our minds). Not every angler is perfect. I'm a Spey or Switch man myself, but I recognize the raging envy and anger that "they" weren't on the river that day. Lighten up and spend your energy on protecting our sport from the real idiots who want to stop sport fishing!
I can't understand...so much money to fish Alta with a "trout rod"!! Poor fish, no chance to live after so long fight. This is "nature balance"??? Try be a serious, flyfishing for salmon is not a play for such anglers.
you telling me a single handed ten weight is light, its short but not light why do you think they use them for 120 lb herring (tarpon)!!! that fight a damn sight harder than a 40lb atlantic
Sorry, in watching this all the way through again I have to agree with some of the comments. I have caught many king salmon on the fly rod, perhaps not the perfect corollary, but I don't think that thirty or forty minutes with all those long runs would have a strong positive correlation with catch and release. This fish fought to the death. Yes there was some swift water that the fish used to its advantage, that is a deep fish and it did get crosswise into the current and start to run, but really it's sad overall, after chasing the thing with the boat and all of the emphasis on getting it on film and measuring it and it dies anyway. So pick up a rock and kill the thing already It's still alive when the Norwegians are cradling it! No wonder Americans get maligned all over the globe!
todo mundo opina pero al rato de pescar ahí se ve por que hay muchos que dicen técnica y esas cosas cada pescador pesca a su manera y punto es que de verdad
As said below, why fish on a big river with fish that size with trout tackle for all intent purposes, even if the fish wasn't bleeding exhaustion might kill him.Pity cracking fish, get yourself a double-hander and show the fish some respect!!
I have to say what kind of idiot is fishing big salmon with a one hand rod that isnt clearly that heavy? And why is he dropping the fishing many times to the water? And how can you know which side the fish is hooked?
makes me sick to hear only 10 people are allowed to fish and then charge them a small fortune to do so keep it for the rich who dont even care about sport fishing makes me sick
AGAIN A PLACE AND THE CHANCES OF ONLY RICH PERSOSN TO FISH. EVERY TIME THAT SOME ONE , A LOCAL KILL A FISH AND WE MAKE A BIG DEAL. IT IS NOT CONSERVATION OF THE ATLANTIC SALMON IT IS CONCERVATION OF THE ATLANTIC SALMON FOR THE PEOPLE CAN PAY TO GO FISHING THERE.
Talk like youre a salmon lover but your over playing of this amazing fish on light tackle for your own vain purposes are sickening. Salmon fishing is not about playing fish until they show their sides and then posing for pictures...once the fish takes the fly the rewarding part is over. Fight the fish hard and quick or do a long line release out of respect for the fish and those who come behind you.
How can another reel and rod avoid the fly getting hooked in the gills? The way the fish takes the fly have nothing to do with the gear.

Fishing salmon with a singelhanded rod like this is not allowed in the salmon season.(in Alta river)

you have to be super rich to fish there but would be a trip of a life time, I hope you and your dad get there.

Mr Natural says "get the right tool for the job"
Muppet can't even hold that fish it's a pity a wallet dictates the river u fish in ..great river would be a dream for most anglers
why are you droping the fish all the time!!
disappointing display really....perfect example of why light tackle is detrimental to fish. Get a proper rod and reel next time.....

Sad. I don't know who is the most sad. The guide OR the angler. WTF?
