What made forts useful? It’s understandable how people fortified entire cities in the ancient period, since cities are valuable and meaningful for wars, but during the medieval ages, when feudalism meant that kings and emperors couldn’t spend all the nation’s resources on one large project (since most of the taxes went to local fiefs) there were smaller fortifications build almost everywhere. The thing was that all you could achieve with a fort is to sent some men into it, but the same could be achieved by just walking away from the enemies.
