I've always felt like SMB lost levels is way too overhated. Sure it's underwhelming as a sequel to SMB. And it's level design is pretty much like walking through a path of burning coal. I don't know why but. theres something fun about it. it's brutal but it's not unfair, it's a good challenge for people who mastered the original game. Basically what Shiggy thought in it's development.
Honestly I agree, I vastly prefer it to Mario 1 tbh. It's fun and I get there's alot of BS but it's fun most times and alot of the stuff it does gets praise. I get that the main problem is that it pulls those cards from the start but simultaneously the game was made to be for players of the first game.
@@MattTrashBoat If you die on the original version, the game will sent you back to the start of the world. And on World C-3, the 5th spring frequently despawns making the huge gap impassable. Making it one of the hardest levels of Super Mario franchise, don't know why the articles never mention that spring. World C-3 on the All-Stars is easier (the spring never despawn) than some of the levels of Lost Levels. But World C of the original version is a demon, mostly because C-3 is in the middle of the world (once you die you'll replay C-1 & C-2).
In retrospect, I view this more like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and while I think SMB2 US is a more interesting game with more new to offer, and like its strange additions to the cast, perhaps this should’ve still been allowed to release on the NES. Maybe not as SMB2 proper, but under the Lost Levels name still.
I actually don't like the All-Stars versions of SMB and TLL because they messed up how bricks work. Instead of being pushed back down after breaking one like they're *supposed* to, instead you go through them like butter.
@@HylianMaster-ls2ps that's nice for people that prefer that version - personally i can't stand the graphics and music changes and if i want to play those games with saves i'll play the NES all-stars romhack
@@glmrgloam Yeah I don't like the All-Stars graphics for SMB either. SMB2 and 3 look good in All-Stars (though none of the All-Stars recreations look as good as SMW in my opinion) so I don't know what happened. I guess it's quite difficult to update a game that looks _as classic_ as the original Super Mario Brothers.
19:46 Incidentally, before Lost Levels there was an arcade game called VS Super Mario Bros on the VS system. Many levels were reworked to be harder for the arcade experience. Many of Lost Levels's levels originated in Vs SMB.
The multiple enemies in 1-1 are clealry lined up for you to do a combo and get a 1-up. Using warp doesn't cancel access to the bonus worlds. The fundamental reason that Mario 2 didn't come to the West was that by 1988 NES cartridges were way more advanced so that SMB1's graphics were too basic to impress the market, compared to say Blaster Master, Contra, Life Force or Bionic Commando. 8-3 of For Super Players is unironically the best 2D Mario Level of all time.
If you want the best Super Mario Bros 2 experience I suggest playing the All Stars version. It saves with each stage cleared so you can continue from where you left off even if you get a game over and you only need to beat World 8 once to access the letter worlds.
The lost levels is a great example of first impressions do matter the most, that easy to obtain poisonous mushroom and harder to obtain powerups really cemeted the idea of an unfair game right from the get go, which is slightly true.
Not really. IMO level design in this game is not enjoyable even after beating it several times. And I appreciate enjoyable and overall better level design in "USA" SMB2. Super Mario bros 2 is my pick for proper sequel(I know it is only rescin of other game)

A bad game, no, but a bad sequel. If it were released today, it would probably be basically "Super Mario Bros.: Hard Mode DLC." It feels like additional content, a continuation of the original adventure, a challenge for those who think they've mastered the original. But a sequel should have its own identity and a fair amount of originality and novelty, which this game lacked, save for a few new elements and (in the original releases) some minor graphical improvements. It is otherwise very much the same, only much more difficult, and I do not think it is good for that to be the defining trait of a sequel. Its release in Western markets very possibly would have hurt the franchise, as it is very popular among young children, and the difficulty of SMB2/TLL would be unreasonable and off-putting for them, and would have left many less than enthusiastic for a "Super Mario Bros. 3." I'm glad it got released in different forms after a little while, but it's a good thing it wasn't the first sequel we got.
I remember playing through the entirety of this game. I had fun raging at it the entire time. Of course I refused to take any shortcuts so I could play world 9 too. Overall it’s a fun game but I don’t recommend it for the average Nintendo fan. I’m just a weirdo who beat all of Blue Kaizo so I’m into this unfair game design I can get mad at.
I only played it via the All Stars SNES game while you COULD play the Game Boy Advanced version of Lost Levels World A through D are NOT in THAT version of the game at all World 9 I believe IS on the GBA version but doesn't require you to beat worlds 1 to 8 without warping to DO so.

It's not forgotten, and it's not good. SMBLL isn't hard, it's just bullshit, the fact that the first mushroom in a ? block in the game kills you speaks volumes for the rest of the experience.
yeah, at the start of the game. it's called "teaching the player a new mechanic". even if you die later on (say, world 1-4) you can restart without much progress loss. it's not even the first mushroom either, there's one hidden in a block before that.
That's actually almost completely false. In the og version, to get the 4 secret worlds A through D, you have to beat 8-4 8 times, but you can use warps all 8 times so it's not actually that bad since the optimal warp route is mostly the easier levels of the game anyway. The only world for which you need to beat the game without warps is world 9, and you only need to do it once to do so. And I have no idea where the heck you got the "without dying once" part from, for both the things I just mentioned you can die and game over all you want while going for these and you'll still unlock the secret worlds.
So sick of seeing UA-cam videos calling this a bad game. It's not a great game, but it shouldn't be compared to something like Mario is Missing or Mario's Time Machine. In fact, Paper Mario: Sticker Star is a much worse game than SMB2:TLL!
