QUICK STORY - In the 1990s, and early 2000s, Music Samples were the cause of many beefs in Hip Hop.
Case in point, Blackstreet vs 2pac.
In 1995, as 2pac was coming into DeathRow, Dr. Dre was exiting. In passing, Dr. Dre had a stash of beats he intended to leave with DeathRow mainly for 2pac; whilst, on the side, he was selling beats to other Interscope (the Parent Company of DeathRow) artists. One of the people who he sold Beats to... Teddy Riley.
The particular beat in question, a production heavily based on a sample of Bill Wither's "Grandma's Hands".
Teddy Riley, was at the forefront of the New Jack Swing movement in the early 90s and had a hand in the successes of multiple acts and bands. One of these bands was the boy band, "Guy" - with lead singer Aaron Hall.
Hall, who was, himself at the time, on a mission to leave the group Guy, refused to sing the song - thus giving Teddy Riley no other option but to ship the beat to other potential takers.
One of these takers, was the upcoming boy band founded by Teddy Riley, "Blackstreet", who gladly jumped on the opportunity.
Dr. Dre and Queen Pen would also feature on the song and the track would be released to worldwide acclaim, marking one of Dr. Dre's first successes in the aftermath (pun intended) of leaving DeathRow.
    The song... "No Diggity".
Unhappy with the success of his former partner, Suge Knight sought to put out the fire Dr. Dre was seemingly setting, by pettily getting his artists (mainly 2pac) to put out tracks with the same samples... in the form of "Toss It Up".
The exact same sequence would occur again in the form of Blackstreet's "Don't Leave Me" and 2pac's "I Ain't Mad At Cha", further showing how important samples were to the careers of artists at the time.
There are several other incidents that occurred like this (Nas' "It Ain't Hard To Tell" vs SWV's "Right Here", "Getting Money" vs "Hit 'Em Up", Mariah Carey's "Loverboy" vs Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Real" just to name a few) and maybe one day I will do a series about it.

Whenever I hear a hip-hop or R&B song that samples DeBarge, James Brown, or the Isley Brothers, I feel a chill down my spine. It just goes to show how influential those artists are

Another sample of “A Dream” by Debarge is “Unpredictable” by Keshia Chante & “I Ain’t Mad At Cha” by 2Pac & Danny Boy (which contains a replayed sample).
