- In this video, you will enjoy a review of the Sena R1 bicycle riding helmet. I have an interesting story about how I purchased his helmet it was really not my intention to purchase this helmet but when I went to the bike shop the very first helmet that he shows me was this helmet. Now what he said was that a lot of cyclists don’t like this helmet because it weighs 13 ounces and most helmets weigh around 9 - 10 ounces. I tried the helmet on and I loved it. Some of the features:
• Bluetooth 4.1
• 4-way group intercom, open Bluetooth channel, So riders can communicate as they would face-to-face
• 900-meter range
• FM radio.
As you know from some of my previous videos that that was a source of contention for me #1 was the mirror of #2 was actually hearing behind me when I had the earplugs or headphones on while riding. • How Riders Respond to ...
Well, what I like about this helmet is it has speakers that are not too loud but it’s just loud enough so you can hear them and then I have a mic so you can actually take phone calls. To take phone calls you just hit this middle button. Turn your music up to you just press the plus button here in a turn it down you press the back button. If you’re listening to music and you wanna advance to the next song you just hold this button-down. To turn it on you just press the buttons and then turn it on. Now one of the most unique features about this helmet is the communication feature where you can communicate with other riders who have a helmet like this. So my plan is to buy one for my wife so that when we are riding we can talk.
I love talking to my wife on our rides, the problem is she rides her upright so it’s difficult for us to talk. But now we can talk together. As you can see here also I have attached a mirror. The other thing I like is you can adjust the ban head strap you can adjust it. And these straps for your chin have a quick release that makes some easy to navigate through it’s a very comfortable helmet and he has padding on the inside I think it’s one of my best investments and bike riding equipment.

My wife and I love our Sena helmets, the intercom is great.
I use my Sena on group motorcycle rides and love it. I think it is so much safer when several of us can communicate road conditions, traffic, etc. The motorcycle units cost $150-200 so only $130 for the communicator AND helmet is a good deal.
Beemerdon1 I agree with, and great point
I am in the process of buying my first recumbent trike
I like this helmet - I will look further into it
Thank you for this great review
You have a great voice. You should do more product reviews. I know you really like your VTX, but you could also review other trikes. Maybe get your local trike shop to let you borrow trikes in exchange for mentioning them in your videos.
Great point Kevin, that would add variety
The Sena R1 helmets are our best-selling helmet to the point where we're just not even carrying much else in the way of helmets at our bike shop. These are the best thing ever.
I’m with you Pedego
Liked and subbed. good video
Cool helmet and great review. I just bought a new helmet but spousal unit and I have been looking for a better way to communicate and this helmet might be it.
Me too James, I think my wife may enjoy riding with me more if she can talk to me

We tried walkie talkies and cheap two way radios and neither worked well, and using our phones is not easy either. The Sena helmet looks to be a great solution.
How neet, I didn't know they made one like that. I just bought my first vehicle that can connect to my cell and really like that. I had a cell holder on my trike but my new phone was to heavy for it and it kept falling off so now I have to stop if someone calls because I put it in the back bag. I've been looking for a heavier holder but that sounds just right. Thanks for showing that.
You are welcome Joe, I think we had some of the same struggles
Good video we are going to buy those helmets, one question: when you are listing to music or book can your wife call you though the intercom ? I know you can't do both ( listen and Intercom) but will it pause and you two can talk? Thanks we love riding, its great during COVID.
Been looking at the Sena and think its an awesome implementation especially with the intercom. just wondering, how’s the helmet fit like for you. Im a 56-57 which puts me at the end of the M size range . Ride safe .
I've just ordered one and the visor.. happy not to have to wear earbuds. I had a Sena motorcycle helmet years ago, it was a good helmet so i'm guessing their bicycle helmet will be just as good quality.
George, We went with the R-1 EVO to not be limited to 4 riders. The EVO has 9 channels and you can have many more riders then 4. We love the SENA helmets.
Very cool Rob, how many people have you had on intercoms at one time? Great choice
@@themotivatedrider3840 Two is the most so far as just a test but we are hoping for larger group rides in the future, and just didnt want to be limited to 4 riders.
@@themotivatedrider3840 We just did a ride with five people on the R1-Evos and the connection was quite good most of the time. A little glitchy once in a while but it was a fun group ride.
I just came across some of your videos and the one titled tag team where you commented on guys saying how fast one of the bikes had a hard shell case on the back where can I find that
Enjoying all your videos. Plz tell me the brand of your mirror
Joe it’s the EVT safe zone bicycle helmet mirror
Would know how to connect the 2 speaker I’m only getting sound out of the left . Thank you
Nice Helmet ⛑ George
Thanks Ghost

If you crash with that helmet do you have to replace it
Lol, james I’m not sure?
Yup, just as with any helmet, if you crash and damage it, it's no longer fit for service. Same goes with replacing helmets every 3 to 5 years as the polystyrene degrades with sun and sweat and looses integrity.
So yes, the obvious question is what happens when you have to toss the helmet with all the electronics in it?
I actually have this helmet. Got it on sale for cheap last year. I use it to communicate with my friend who has the same helmet and I connect it to my phone for audio turn-by-turn directions during brevets. Works well. When it reaches the end of its life I plan on digging out the electronics and repackaging them in a case to mount on my bike. Maybe I'll make a custom headrest or something.
Not everyone is going to do that and it is wasteful to throw away good electronics. One suggestion would be to sell the helmet for the electronics to a maker on eBay or Etsy when it's no longer protective. It would make a good cosplay prop as-is or someone could take out the electronics and use them.
It's good to consider the whole lifecycle of a product whenever you buy something.
So if you hear Musik, does everybody hear your music as well?
Hody, It so soft I not sure if others can hear your music. But from where the speakers are you can hear.
"Android type connector" = micro USB.... ;-)
