- Datsun is an automobile brand owned by Nissan. Datsun's original production run began in 1931. From 1958 to 1986, only vehicles exported by Nissan were identified as Datsun. In 1986, Nissan phased out the Datsun name but re-launched it in 2013 as the brand for low-cost vehicles manufactured for emerging markets.
In 1931, Dat Motorcar Co. chose to name its new small car "Datson", a name which indicated the new car's smaller size when compared to the DAT's larger vehicle already in production. When Nissan took control of DAT in 1934, the name "Datson" was changed to "Datsun", because "son" also means "loss" (損 Son) in Japanese and also to honor the sun depicted in the national flag. Nissan phased out the Datsun brand in March 1986. The Datsun name is most famous for the 510, Fairlady roadsters, and later the Fairlady (240Z) coupes.
Datsun entered the American market in 1958, with sales in California. By 1959, the company had dealers across the U.S. and began selling the 310 (known as Bluebird domestically). From 1962 to 1969 the Nissan Patrol utility vehicle was sold in the United States (as a competitor to the Toyota Land Cruiser J40 series), making it the only Nissan-badged product sold in the USA prior to that name's introduction worldwide decades later.
From 1960 on, exports and production continued to grow. A new plant was built at Oppama, south of Yokohama; it opened in 1962. The next year, Bluebird sales first topped 200,000, and exports touched 100,000. By 1964, Bluebird was being built at 10,000 cars a month.
For 1966, Datsun debuted the 1000, allowing owners of 360 cc (22 cu in) kei cars to move up to something bigger. That same year, Datsun won the East African Safari Rally and merged with Prince Motors, giving the company the Skyline model range, as well as a test track at Murayama.
The company introduced the Bluebird 510 in 1967. This was followed in 1968 with the iconic 240Z, which proved affordable sports cars could be built and sold profitably: it was soon the world's #1-selling sports car. It relied on an engine based on the Bluebird and used Bluebird suspension components. It would go on to two outright wins in the East African Rally.
Katayama was made Vice President of the Nissan North American subsidiary in 1960, and as long as he was involved in decision making, both as North American Vice President from 1960 to 1965, and then President of Nissan Motor Company U.S.A. from 1965 to 1975, the cars were sold as Datsuns. “What we need to do is improve our car’s efficiency gradually and creep up slowly before others notice. Then, before Detroit realizes it, we will have become an excellent car maker, and the customers will think so too. If we work hard to sell our own cars, we won’t be bothered by whatever the other manufacturers do. If all we do is worry about the other cars in the race, we will definitely lose.

Driving my Datsun 620 (1976) has helped me to understand another reason why society has become so impatient, vehicles have become so fast and easily accessible in every way in order to make life easier and quicker
Driving my old girl has given me a glimpse of the pace in 76, it's slower less hurried and steady
It's definitely in no rush, and a valuable lesson as I turn 40 this year, I'm going to slow down and be in less of a hurry through life.
Thank you Datsun it's a wonderful truck and brings me much joy in 2021.
I used to ride out every other year with my Dad to Sterling Colorado to "Connie's Datsun" and get a new pickup. He had a mail route and they stood the test of time & rough miles!
My father had a Datsun Bluebird in the 1980’s. We all loved the car back then & served our family for many years
My father bought me a 1976 280z when I was 12 years old in 2002, we lived out in the country and I drove it on all the backroads. Loved that car and started restoring it but sadly the rust got the best of the car. I ended up buying a 76 280z 2+2 in 2003 with money I earned mowing yards. I had planned to restore it but life got in the way with college and relocation.
Well, last week I finally bought another 76 280z 2+2 from a salvage yard that I'm going to definitely hang onto and restore. All model Datsuns are special to me and I will always have that fun memory of my dad pulling up in a 280z as a surprise and handing me the keys, great memory.
My dad had 2 Datsun 1600 convertibles back in the 60’s. Later in 73 he bought a red pickup. Still runs today.
Those 70's Datsuns are my favorite cars!

I was a Datsun apprentice mechanic from 1973 to 1977 then a tradesman to 1979. The 1600 is one of my favorite cars of all time. Bullet proof. Funny - Datsun always came to market with an outstanding car then destroyed it in subsequent face lifts and "improvements": The 180B wasn't a patch on the 1600 and the 200B . . . well that was just a dog. But they were simple, reliable cars.
I was an apprentice trained Datsun mechanic between 1982 - 1988. They were simplistic, reliable & very easy to work on.
And that went a long way to winning over buyers too.
They still are. Love my 240z's
I had a 1980 Datsun 310. Not a fun car. But it was reliable with its 50 horse motor

My dad bought a B210 (120Y) new in 1975. That was a great little car. Reliable, easy on fuel and a cinch to fix. I kind of lamented by dad selling that car after 25 years of great service. The only thing I didn't like about it was the paint, it would oxidize if you looked at it wrong. Wish we still had that little car.
love those old Datsun pickups. They were simple, rugged and easy to work on. I bet if they brought them back they would sell.
I recently saw one of these Datsun pickups still in use in Costa Rica. Club cab with diesel engine. Haven't seen one in the States for decades.
I had a 100A in 1985. Put 60,000 miles on it travelling back and forth from Belgium. Regular service, only had minor repairs. Body was built like a tank. Happy days.

I love the 520 and 620 Datsun trucks. Durable and fuel efficient. 'They don't make them like that anymore.'
I have a fully rebuilt except for the engine 1978 Datsun truck 2Wd. New paint and runs great! I bought it new at the age of 26 and I still have it at age 65. Rebuilt carb the L20B engine is a marvel with just over 220,000

I am a big fan of Datson/Nissan cars. I remember riding in them as a kid. Our neighbors had them and they are a treat to be driven in one. Great memories.

I liked the Datsun 520 series trucks to. Every so many years, about the half of year, the Japanese change their model years in the half of season. The 520's were from 1965 till 1972 and a half when the 620's were introduced that lasted till 1979 and a half when the 720's were introduced, which lasted till 1986 and a half when the D21 series was introduced until 1997 and a half when the Nissan Frontier was introduced. In 1980, you saw a lot of Datsun trucks running around saying Datsun by Nissan and Nissan by Datsun as they were changing their names gradually from Datsun to Nissan, because many years prior, the Datsun name sold much better than Nissan, yet, if you pulled the hood of any Datsun, the head said, Nissan on it.
Omg this car DATSUN has been my dream car.... very rare to find out in India... but one is still at garage. The dream comes true .👍👍😊

Bought my first car about two years ago which was a '76 Bluebird (known as '180B' here in Australia, 'Bluebird-U' in Japan and '610' in the US). haven't had a single problem since and it's fun to drive albeit a little wafty - an understatement. It's an auto but still feels more mechanical than most modern manuals. Not that there are many of them anyway.
I'm from Thailand. I just buy Dutsan720 diesel 1 month ago. $1,000 I love it . good engine.
I have had 2 Datsun Bluebirds (410) from 1965, both as sedan and wagon versions. I wish I will be able to have a similar car again some day.
I worked at a Vauhall/Datsun dealers from 75 to 81 Great cars happy memorys .
I saw a Lime green 240z on a car hauler today, and what an experience it was to see such a lovely car. Those classic z cars are truly works of art and they are a rare sight here where I live in the northern US.
My 79 620 pickup, bought it when I was 16, turn 40 next year and I am still driving it.

My favorites where the 1600 Roadster, 1976 280Z fir higher compression, aggressive camshaft grind (Lost in 1977), the Nissan Patrol (Outside the US only) and the V8 Presidential, never sent to the US either, but ending with the 620 Datsun pickup. Still have the 1600 Roadster, as I worked at the dealer. I saw the “B210” come in for service with over 300k miles and can not forget to say the 510 Sedan was one tough son of a gun. ASE Master Tech since 1978 (NIASE back then) Retired.
The one major problem with Datsun's in Canada was it only took a few years for them to rust out completely . Japanese cars were known to use recycled metal in those days . Having said that the big three had the same problem .
Ya, Fords were way better, the Vega too. Lol!

I was weatherbeaten in the back of a 69 d,a,t,sun pickup most of my childhood trust me they're tuff little trucks wish toy or Nisson would make that style of little pickups again
they do, but in japan, america it seems only wants giant gas wasters that never are used for work, but mobile nail salons, school bus and feeding stations (try looking inside the average american car, the dropped food in it could feed a pig for a week)

From 1996-98 I had a 1981 510. Great little car. Paid $750 USD for it. Wish I still had it.

@@RagingUtai My Datsun is a 1979 and Toyota's of 1979 we about the same reliability. Mechanicaly both very good but also rust buckets both of them unless you lived far from salt water and no winters.
I have a 1973 Datsun 620 with 33,000 miles and I'm the second owner. It has sat outside but is in unmolested condition. Has the super rare automatic transmission too. I will be listing it for sale soon.

@@timothy2935 I got $3000 for it. The young man that came to pick it up said "this was the first time I got a great deal from Craigslist". I wish now I would have kept it. Only 33K miles, ACTUAL mileage!

In Tokyo Japan, the executives where sitting at the meeting table with the president at the head. And a large pile of sushi and drinks in the middle in which the executives where eating. The president going around asking different members what they should name the new line of autos for the American market in which majority of the names displeases the president. One member asked how many can we produce in a day? The president leaning back in his chair said 100,000 units a day. And another asked how soon can we get them to America? The president replied in less than a day! And a lowly executive in the corner of the table looking from his plate with a mouth full of sushi with wide eyes said DAT-SOON??

Mom and Dad bought a 1975 Mediterranean Blue B210 in 1975. It was a 4-speed stick shift with 4 doors. No Radio and they had air conditioning added at the dealership. I think the total price was $3600. We used it for Our Family Car for 9 years. Then I was old enough to drive, so they gave it to Me. I wish I had kept it. They bought a 1984 Dodge Aries, Big Mistake, and later they got Me a 1985 Plymouth Reliant, and traded The Datsun B-210 for it. Another Big Mistake. Even on it's worst day, the Datsun was Millions better in quality an reliability than those Killer K Cars.
My first truck was a PL 620.
Kids these days have no clue, datsun was the best car maker in history, i still remember the sights and smells of our datsuns

I'm looking into getting a non running Datsun 100a (one that's not a rust bucket of course), and get it back on the road as my fist car.
Well. I'm born 1989 and I tell younger ones out there that it's the original before nissan. These cars were only great because the Japanese workers in those days were extremely ahead of their time. The american quality control was so bad compared to this. This is like 3D car building for its time
I still think it was a mistake using the international Nissan badge. Datsun sounds lots nicer and had a history in the US and Europe. They really gambled there...Though it seems they won I guess, just wonder how different things would have been if they retained the Datsun branding?

I drove my 120y into the ground. Mind you, 160kph for an hour and a half with no oil could do that to pretty much any car.
The other trick was line locking into third and spinning both wheels @ 7000rpm!

Datsun came to Trinidad & Tobago in the late 60s. It changed the automotive profile of our country forever. They learnt from Austin. Now, they can teach the world !

I had a Datsun B 210 while in high school circa 1970. It was a 4dr.sedan great on gas and never got stuck in snowstorms like my friends muscle cars of the day. Ran chains on rear tires and climbed the steepest hills.
My first car was a Datsun 120Y. I bought it used for about 200 UK pounds. It was a really nice car and was very easy and cheap to fix whenever there were problems. Sadly, it turned into a 'rust bucket'.

Loved my 1979 DATSUN 280ZX !!! Sky blue with a black interior, I was the third owner and bought it with 4 unmatched tires! Put at least as much into it as I bought it for, but it was so much FUN ! After 13 years of loving it I sold it to buy a 1991 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo ! My second dream car, and I still have it!

actually Datsun can trace its roots to around 1917, a company called DAT, which reformed into "Datsun". 1932 was when the Japanese govt merged them with Nissan. Then in 1966 Prince Motor Company was merged with Nissan. Prince is who brought us the Skyline

Prince also brought Emperor's vehicles.
I had a Sunny 1200 - LB110.. G-d, I loved that car... Bought it new at Ernie MacKay in Evanston - 1971 .. Something like $1866.00 on the sticker in the showroom... a mere $2125 delivered!

Interesting video. Funny mixture of some US specs models and European market model names. Video is also showing some models that were not exported to US. Possibly European production.
In Europe Datsun name started to fade out in 1983 when new cars were called Datsun-Nissan. Later only Nissan.
In Japan I believe both names were in use pre-1982. Some model series were under brand name Nissan, some under brand name Datsun. (Nissan Cherry, Datsun Sunny etc.)

My mom had an '83 Nissan/Datsun Sentra Sedan that she bought new in '83. She had that car for about 6 years. That was a great little car! And my Dad had an early 89's Datsun Pickup Truck, which was also very reliable and easy to work on

Now 2019 I have 2 cars Datsun 510 .One ,1600sss and other 1600 special ,1600sss has 20 000km completely genuine ,the other I don't know the real km,but maybe 220 000 I'm not the shore. I love the 1600 SSS (1970)

Bought a used b210 2dr 4sp in 1974. Put over 200k on it, never a problem. Put clutch in it before I drove it away. Still on that when I traded it for a 710 in 1981. Traded that for a 729 4x4 in 86. Sold that in 98 to my b-i-l with 286k on it. Still in service today. Bought a Sentra then. And a Frontier. Traded that in 2005 for a d40 cc v6 Auto. Sold that in 2014 and bought a d40 ex cab v6. Bought a Camry in 2013 that I traded for the d40 I now have. Never had any probs other than a faulty fpg under warranty. All have been bulletproof!

Pauli Matikainen Cool history. In my opinion c.a.d.technology has made mass production cars body shapes dull, old school clay design made better looking cars. driveline suspension brakes have benefited greatly on the other hand

Went to the store for bread in a Datsun 2000. My brother in law hit 130 mph. Red car was an old race car, first wash after purchased, the numbers on the doors was reviled. in the rain you had to keep your foot over the hole in the floorboard. The car was great fun.

In the late 70s I worked at a pesticide-spraying outfit outside Chicago. My job was to drive a Datsun pickup with about 1000 pounds of sprayer/Malathion in the back and "fog" Chicago neighborhoods at a constant 10 mph, at night. We had about six of those Datsuns, which held up amazingly well under the tender mercies of young men who didn't own them. I think we seized the engine in one, probably because "I'm sure somebody checked the oil".
We had a couple of Bell model 47 helicopters, too, used for spraying remote ponds. They were flown by Vietnam vets who were completely nuts. The gas pumps were in the center of the truck yard and they'd just land by the pumps to fill up, blowing dirt and trash around like a hurricane. Ah, the good old days.
I miss my 1976 B.210 what a lil tank she was. now I cant find any.

Back in the mid 80s I drove from Glendale California to New York City exactly to ß Madison avenue, I did that on about 3 days with a friend of mine on a 1969 1.6 liter Station wagon Datsun, it had some extra gadgets like 5 custom Enkey Rims gold inside silver rims all aluminum. Nice electric sunroof, custom engine oil cooler modified suspension racing seats one of the best sound systems, air conditioning, nothing to look ugly or exaggerated or ridiculous, just a very fine and nice looking Japanese engineering, it took us 3 days to do that, every time we cross the welcome to state line we take a picture, the care give us cero nothing of a problems, extremely reliable cars. It was white and like I said, wherever we stop to refueling they all say nice car, Kool ride nice wheels etc. Too bad I had to be back to LA cause of a emergency on a big piece of equipment, I've use to be a grading engineer for a demolition excavation and grading company. One day I had a call from the sister of my do called friend, the punk went out drinking and totalled. ,Back then 15 K was a lot of money 😵😵😵😵😵
I did that drive in 2003, drove from Mojave, CA to NYC, in my ‘71 510 Wagon. No problems!
