My parents had this exact model, 1986 4x4, except it was brown. It was the car I took my driver's test in. The carbureted engine was weak, but our previous family vehicle was a 1973 VW Bus, so it was still an improvement.The 5 speed transmission was pretty clunky, but the push button 4 wheel drive worked well. The high center of gravity was no joke. My sister rolled it and got it totaled in the early 90s. I would say it was ahead of its time as the ancestor of the current Crossovers.
These were almost more popular in northern New England than the T115 minivans. Even before and without the AWD option they were cheaper and had MUCH better ventilation - note the wind-down second row windows, something Chrysler's homegrown vans didn't have until 2008(!) AND pop-out third row. That's important in parts of the country where non-AC cars were still the norm in the '80s.
We used to have a 1985 Dodge Colt Vista similar to this one when I was growing up, & I would give ANYTHING to have another one!!!!! Ours was Glacier Blue Metallic, 2WD, & an automatic, though, but it DID have the same Custom Package that this car does. It also had a manually-tuned AM-FM stereo radio with no cassette deck. NOT a star on the track by ANY means, but..........let's just say that Glacier Blue Metallic was definitely the appropriate color for ours, as it DEFINITELY had glacier-like acceleration!!!!!
There's the late 90s non 4WD nimbus (the mitsubishi version not this rebadge) still getting around for scrap prices in my country. Nobody liked them and they still look ugly.

I had a 91 that was damn near in perfect condition! It was AWD. Silver and dark silver. I believe in 1990 the selectable 4wd was removed due to problems and a much better viscous coupling was used from then on. I paid $900 for it in 2017. Owned it for a little over a year. Great weird car that got comments everywhere.

The 87 Plymouth Colt Vista 4WD with LSD was my absolute favorite car. I bought it new in 1987 and had it for 14 years. That car could go anywhere and was pretty comfortable. Wish I still had it.
We had one in the mid 90s during hard financial times. Family of 7. I hated driving it as a teen and even with the manual transmission, it only got louder, not faster, the harder you drove it lol
Wonderful design for the time. As stated, they were under powered, and they rusted easily which is why you don't see them anymore. I always found it funny that you could not buy this vehicle at a Mitsubishi dealership.
All dodges seem to rust fast especially in the 80's. Wish there were more neon's still around. Edit: I also wish there were more Dodge Daytona's, Plymouth Laser, Eagle Talon... pretty much all the DSM turbo cars were badass imo.
Not as strange as the lack of a mid-80s Mirage 5-door hatchback. They were sold only in bare-bones E trim only in 1985 at Mopar shops, and if you tried to buy one I'm sure the salesman would've moved heaven and earth to get you in an Omnirizon instead.

True. 80s Mitsubishis were pure retro Japanese. I miss the original lineup, when they became their own independent company in the US...The Tredia, Cordia and Starion. I used to own an 88 Tredia Turbo. It was pretty quick and surprised a few V8s off the line. Lol
@@alexander1485 they technically have much more presence outside of North America. For instance, they still sell the Montero/Pajero in other markets.. Particularly east Asia. Those models still sell well. Don't get why they don't consider bringing them back to North America especially considering how well crossovers sell... Those Monteros back in the day were beasts

Triton based vehicles will also need to be widened for FMVSS rollover regulations, which is a 5.8 million dollar estimated fee. So those products would be priced out of their markets, and people would buy cheaper crossovers even though the Montero sport, Triton, and Montero are not crossovers.
This was likely trying to compete with minivans, which were as popular in the 80's as SUVs are today. Honda also made their own version based on the Civic and it looked just as awkward, yet practical. Does anyone else enjoy these MW retro reviews MORE than current day reviews? I don't know...something about the simplicity and the nostalgia is more appealing to me. When I watch new car reviews and 15mins are spent talking about all the gadgets inside, I get bored.
We drove one of the 2WD Vistas from Ohio to Washington state back in 87. Had a couple vapor lock issues, but it soldiered through. Dad traded it in on a Grand Voyager that fall.

Chrysler, you can order any color interior you want. It's going to come in bordello red, but feel free to order any color. My parent's Aries and my Caravan both had the same colors.
Even yugo had a 0-60 of about 14 15 seconds this is just dangerously slow how did mitshbishi just get away with that yes it was the 80s but everything over 17s even back then was just unsafe especially for a family hauler

i picked up a 1987 FWD, automatic Dodge Colt Vista, same champagne brown from this video, with 65,000 miles 6 months ago for $1000.00. Replaced all the motor mounts, did some front end tightening and repairs, new thermostat, fuel pump, flushed the fluids and gave it new plugs, wires, distributor and rotor, the ugly little thing is pulling the EPA 25 miles per gallon. the 87's are a split year, though. finding parts was a nightmare. 2 of the 4 motor mounts are not manufactured by anybody in the aftermarket. because it's so old and neither dodge nor mitsubishi claims it anymore, to find proper part numbers i had to cross reference mitsubishi starion part numbers through a mopar parts website and then i had to narrow down between the 4wd and the FWD versions and then factor in the October 1986 manufacturing changes that happened(spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotor and other random shit). even then, neither mitsubishi or mopar had the parts and all my orders were cancelled. but with part numbers, ebay is usable. still, i found buying 3 of each part to be the most effective. and i've realized that the best and most accurate parts are on rockauto (not shilling for them, they just happen to have the best availability for the car) for closeout prices. i picked up 4 air filters for about $5.00. the only in-town available one is at o'reillys, it's $16.00. when i pulled in the driveway with it, my neighbor looked over at it and said, 'you either inherited that thing or you love it.' 'well, i didn't inherit it.'
@@yetiwalken5811One tip is the "89-"92 mitsubishi galant base models had the same sohc engine with fuel injection you can locate many parts with cross refference, the colt vista is actually closely related to the Cordia/Tredia twins essentially a wagon version of them and i see a lot of similarity to the "84-"88 galant i put a 4g64 2.4 sohc engine from a 92 mitsubishi expo and that was a nice upgrade but someday i will 4g63t swap mine.
My childhood friend's parents had one of these, except it was the 2WD model and it was a newer facelifted version. I thought it was cool (I loved and still do love Mitsubishis from the 70s-90s), but being that their's was an automatic I'd imagine that acceleration was glacial (even though I believe the Colt Vista had fuel injection by then which might have helped a bit). Like many Mitsubishi products from this era, it eventually started burning massive amounts of oil so they traded it for a new '99 Windstar... That basket case is story for another time lol.

We had an '89 version, 5spd 4wd much like this but white with red seats. Gawd, I miss that little turd rocket. Blew the head gasket at 240k and dad got rid of it. It was my 1st car. I ended up getting a lead sled of a Dodge Shadow after that. Much sad.
I recall one of these that had a hole busted in the transfer case. We simply removed the rear driveshaft; owner continued to drive it for another year without problem.

19+ sec 0-60 for this type of vehicle is unacceptable on its own, add a few hundred pounds of humans, air conditioning, and altitude and things become dangerous. And 24mpg is nothing to brag about. 19+ sec 0-60 on say a Chevy/Geo sprint, or a Yugo is a different story since they were marketed as single passenger commuter cars and easily broke 40mpg in normal driving
Too underpowered, even for its time. Imagine it with an automatic transmission and 7 passengers. Can't believe they sold any of these, but they were everywhere back in the day.
The guy check under the hood for a couple of seconds and then slams the hood the the driver starts is 0 to 60 test Why ? I guess he made sure the engine was installed.

I got a 91 for free. maroon on silver, maroon interior, 5 speed, AWD, 126k. It's in amazingly good shape surprisingly.
My father in law had one. We took it deer hunting and that thing couldn't be stopped. Never got stuck and got funny looks from guys in F-150s lol.
Wow. 50/50 spit 4WD with a limited slip? 8 inches of ground clearance? Probably beats most modern crossovers off-road.

Vermont in the late 80s to mid 90s you would see quite a few In Elementary school parking lots in my old Town.
I used to see these in the 90s and early 2000s. Dodge Plymouth Colt, Mitsubishi Patriot, Nissan Axxess/Prarie, Toyota Tercel Wagon, and Honda civic wagon

We had an '89 version, 5spd 4wd much like this but white with red seats. Gawd, I miss that little turd rocket. Blew the head gasket at 240k and dad got rid of it. It was my 1st car. I ended up getting a lead sled of a Dodge Shadow after that. Much sad.

I recall one of these that had a hole busted in the transfer case. We simply removed the rear driveshaft; owner continued to drive it for another year without problem.
This was the car I learned to drive in. Same year, same color but the 2wd version tho

19+ sec 0-60 for this type of vehicle is unacceptable on its own, add a few hundred pounds of humans, air conditioning, and altitude and things become dangerous. And 24mpg is nothing to brag about. 19+ sec 0-60 on say a Chevy/Geo sprint, or a Yugo is a different story since they were marketed as single passenger commuter cars and easily broke 40mpg in normal driving

Too underpowered, even for its time. Imagine it with an automatic transmission and 7 passengers. Can't believe they sold any of these, but they were everywhere back in the day.
The guy check under the hood for a couple of seconds and then slams the hood the the driver starts is 0 to 60 test Why ? I guess he made sure the engine was installed.
There are zero of theses available in the US atm ...all in collectors hands I assume
