Hi guys~ There are a few spots where Japanese is spoken in this video so if you would like English subtitles remember to turn the captions on! :) 日本語字幕あります!CCをオンにしてください⭐️Thanks for watching!
Sharla in Japan I love your videos Sharla 。^‿^。 each one is like a new adventure for me and my buddies to enjoy! p. s. my friend niki had never seen your channel before and she flipped out at your little adventure in Korea with all the k-pop and clothes! She loved it!
Very glad you were able to experience kendo. I've been doing kendo for 3 years now and it is soo fun. However it is also tough, hope everyone gets a chance to experience kendo at least once, really shows a part of Japan's history.
WalkinInJapan Guess i found the person i need to ask :) could you explain to me why the parts of the helmet which are above the shoulders are bent like that?
It's to absorb some of the shockwaves if the opponent ends up hitting that part of the men. If it was flat, you will absorb all of the shockwaves into your shoulder which doesnt feel good :p
SAMURAI TRIP I had so much fun and talking to the armour craftsman was definitely the highlight of the day!! Thank you so much for such a great experience!! :D
Sharla, you did an amazing job on this vlog. I really enjoy seeing your Japanese history and travel vlogs the best! Keep exploring, and doing amazing things!!
I absolutely LOVE how you show the many different aspects and history of Japan instead of just the typical "touristy" kind of stuff!! Gives a whole different perspective and really makes me appreciate it that much more 😊
That looks like such a fun experience! I'm glad it included going to the craftsman's workshop and seeing how all the gear is made. Thank you for your hard work, and sharing this with all of us! Can't wait to see what you have in store for the next one!
Very nice! Thanks for this video, I like the end part a lot, you don't really get to see stuffs like this much nowadays. The masters of a traditional craft!
hello- I'm japanese and I've been watchig ur videos over and over, really addictive lol sugoii!! I used to live in the U.S for 8 years so I understand how hard it is to adapt into differ culture but u r truly amazing! I am admiring u so much and always cheer for u!! thank u so much sharla!
This is so cool! I have been thinking of doing kendo in a place near my house, and hopefully I'll do it once my schedule is not so packed. It's really amazing to see how there is so much history behind every steps you do when practicing kendo (i.e. the nose thing)
This was so entertaining & I loved the convo with the craftsman! During the balloon game, I was like, "HELL YEAH, GET IT SHARLA!" Really cool to learn about the history, too.
Hi Sharla, thank you so much for sharing your experience. I really enjoyed learning some things that my Uncle hasn't taught me. I can impress him with what I know.
Hahaha, this video was originally posted about the same time I started Kendo. Been practicing for a year now and I love it. So a little personal but I had a large chest when I started and I would bind it to allow my Do to fit better and protect against strikes that were too high. Now I use a Cheata Tactical compression BRA and it has been a godsend. Thank you for sharing this, I even learned something new for beginners :D
For some reason I was under the impression this was not the first time you made a video about kendo and I was right, you made one like 3 or 4 years ago for the other channel, you should link it somewhere. Great video, I can't believe most kendōgu is made outside Japan, the last part in the craft workshop was really cool.
I especially loved this video. I lived in Europe through my teenage years and my fondest memories were of the adventures I went on. This reminds me so much of that. Kind of wish I had the time and resources to visit Japan myself. :) Keep them coming.
This may be one of my fave videos. I really love to see traditional Easter stuff. Beautiful! At times I'm sad i'm not from area anywhere around the world when people still keep doing hand made, traditional things. I don't know it makes me feel amazing..maybe because it's still feels like your in those old times back then. If i had money i'd move somewhere just to learn crafting as many things as possible. I'm intrigued.
I always get so excited when my UA-cam notifications, lets me know you've posted a video. I feel like Im living vicariously through you, because I would really love to try living abroad for awhile! Great video as always! ^.^
I am 16 and I do kendo. I passed my 2nd dan at 15 and I love it! I used to do swimming, tennis, football, rugby (all the usual stuff) but gave it all up to focus 100% on kendo.
Hi Sharla. It ’s an interesting movie. I was doing kendo at junior high school, but I had never seen where armor was made, so I was very interested. Sharla's appearance in Kendo is cool.
I did Kendo in college for a year but I had to give it up. Kendo is really intolerant of any physical issues you might have; in my case my knees and ankles don't line up so I physically cannot do Hayasuburi at a sufficient speed and quality to satisfy most sensei. After a year of trying my sensei and I sat down together and he told me that since I physically couldn't do it he would never be able to allow me to advance to actual sparring, never mind competition, and so I was basically as advanced as I would ever be able to be. So I stopped and put my focus into Fencing instead. On the upside I only ever bought a Shinai (Sensei told us not to put more into it until we passed the test for sparring, in case we didn't like kendo or couldn't pass), so I had plenty of money for fencing gear instead.
You know what the kendo gloves instantly reminded me of as you were putting them on? Hockey gloves. I was almost half-expecting you to toss away the kendo stick, throw off the gloves and start brawling during the balloon popping practice. This was really interesting, and it's cool to see you getting the hang of things so quickly. One of my best friends is big into kendo and it was fun watching her at work, but seeing someone new to it learning the first steps so easily was fun as well! Now I know the two people to turn to should I ever need a pair of badass bodyguards! If I can make a suggestion for these traditional Japanese craftspeople videos: I would suggest (if possible) recording some of the major steps in their processes, and perhaps showing a before and after from the raw materials to a finished craft.
Sharla, you should totally start your own little tour guide business. These videos are always my favorite because you're not afraid to ask questions and it's obvious that you're genuinely interested in the explanations they give. Tourists would totally pay to have someone like you walk them through awesome experiences like these!
I loved this video!! Seeing more of the traditional side of things is awesome. While I enjoy watching Tokyo videos, it's refreshing to see other parts of Japan. I can't wait to see where you'll take us next. (BTW the food looked amazing!)
I love it when you do cool side stuff like this, I hope you go to more places in Japan like and film the more rustic and historical aspect of the samurai or ninja or buddhist shrines or just the japanese countryside
My comment, like 4 hours after doing subs lol First, you look very beautiful. Second, the quality of the video is amazing. And I mean editing and everything. You have improved over time. I really loved watching a little more about this sport I had heard about once but didn't really knew that much about. The creation of the armor is unbelievable, by hand! And that fried tofu! Love it!!!
One look at him without even seeing the flag or hearing his accent I already knew he was Malaysian Malay😂 I guess when you get so used to your own people you just know.
Guessed the guy who was helping you out at the dojo was Malaysian by his accent alone. Proud to see someone from home all the way there. Also absolutely great video! love watching this sort :)) 💕💖
Excellent and fascinating. I studies Japanese sword Iaido for many years in Japan. Some women do Kendo, but more traditionally, women would practice Naginata spear.
I could IMMEDIATELY tell the song used was Tristam despite never hearing this particular song aha. Anyways great video Sharla, I really enjoyed learning about kendo! A lot goes into it :)
Aimi Yuri Sakura, I was born and raised in Hawaii so my first language is English. My maternal grandmother was from Niigata-Ken, Japan and spoke only Japanese so it was difficult to converse with her, unfortunately. I loved her very much and wished I could have had deep conversations with her to learn about her life in Japan. But I know that I will see her again one day in Heaven and there, we'll be able to converse with no problem. I am sansei, as you have probably already guessed.
***** Ohh... I see. That is sad. Hope u learn it and be alse to converse with some japanese people. Ohh... I didn't get Sansei...? Do u mean Sensei...?
***** Ohh... I see. 😆I am not Japanese I am an Indian otaku. I love Anime and Japanese culture... Currently livung in Dubai (U.A.E.) I like to learn Japanese and other stuff.

Very glad you were able to experience kendo. I've been doing kendo for 3 years now and it is soo fun. However it is also tough, hope everyone gets a chance to experience kendo at least once, really shows a part of Japan's history.
Yeah it was really great listening to the armour craftsman talk about the history!! I want to go back and just chat with him over tea haha :)
WalkinInJapan Guess i found the person i need to ask :) could you explain to me why the parts of the helmet which are above the shoulders are bent like that?
+Sharla in Japan b fgdvdhct

Such great content, Sharla. I'm getting to know Japan more & more from your channel
I love how you pulled the different aspects together. Most videos focus only on one part.
Looks so cool Sharla! I always enjoy how you're open minded to try these kind of things. Ty for making a video about this ~
I loved seeing inside the Kendo shop! All the old armour and seeing the guy sew the helmet was really interesting.

Great video, Sharla. I love that old traditions like the armor making is still (somewhat) alive.
This is so cool! I have been thinking of doing kendo in a place near my house, and hopefully I'll do it once my schedule is not so packed. It's really amazing to see how there is so much history behind every steps you do when practicing kendo (i.e. the nose thing)
Oh man that was fantastic!!!! I am so envious. It looks like such a great time.

Hi Sharla, thank you so much for sharing your experience. I really enjoyed learning some things that my Uncle hasn't taught me. I can impress him with what I know.
I really want to learn too! But watching you, Sharla, I can also experience how fun being a samurai is!

I'm going into Kendo very soon. My favorite martial arts actually.
Very nice. Bring back many memories of childhood.
I lived in Malaysia for 3 years, great place except that it only has 2 seasons; Summer and hotter Summer, very humid as well.
I always get so excited when my UA-cam notifications, lets me know you've posted a video. I feel like Im living vicariously through you, because I would really love to try living abroad for awhile! Great video as always! ^.^
I'm so glad you brought up the topic of people with large chests cause that was exactly my first thought
