The word boran even has a khmer etymology and the word muay sounds curiously like the number 1 in the khmer language. Many of the rituals in muaythai and techniques are also named after hindu mythology such as hanuman and the garuda. as we know the thais were never hindus, but the khmers were. the music used in muaythai is what khmers use in our funerals and the tattoos sak yant are done in the ancient language of Pali which originated from the pallavas. the thais never had direct contact with the pallavas as they weren’t even in south east asia yet at that time. the khmers did. there is even an incription of a young khmer prince being sent to the pallava kingdom. if you look at the tais that were not influenced by khmer civilisation, none of them practice a martial art anything close to muay boran. their native martial arts look more like kung fu. they don’t even do a wai kru. Kru is an indian word Guru too and is the same word used in khmer. He says that while regional sports such as Muay Thai (Thai boxing) are famous throughout the world, their origins come from bokator. This is because the Khmer empire covered vast swathes of Southeast Asia, including large parts of Thailand, during its peak in the 12th and 13th centuries.
