      We did the coastal loop, Sant Hilari Dam loop, Mare Dèu, Del Mont, Hincapie loop. a few other quickies… Made the 5 days count! 330 miles 20k 23hrs. We’ll get two weeks in next year!

      Dont underestimate your Strength as a touring cyclist. I cycled up the Col du Galbier, Col Du Telegrah, Mont Venteux to name a few with Pannier Bags over a 2 week trip in France and passed many a road cyclist. I had a Sirrus Specialized touring Bike at the time, with low gears making it easier to climb those big peaks, but i was till fit at the time . We climbed L'Alpe-d'Huez without Panier Bags, and felt like we where going up the mountain on Ebikes

    Asturias airport (OVD) is the best choice if flying in. 30min from Oviedo and direct links to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels … definitely plan it in summer as in winter there’s typically snow or at least it is too slippery to ride. “Enjoy” the climb!

    Did Zoncalon this year, so Angliru is the only toughie left to do. Roll on 2024! You only need disc brakes if you have carbon rims, Alu rims are fine with rim brakes.

    • @Jorge-Fernandez-Lopez
      @Jorge-Fernandez-Lopez Рік тому

      Pico Veleta till the top including last gravel kilometers might be another very hard climb. Climate is drier, although "one day the stage" from the beach to the sky must be extremely hard. Better two or three days and visit the city.

    • @popefang
      @popefang Рік тому

      Rode Angliru in 2018, the goal was to complete without unclipping and stopping. Achieved that goal but was spent at the summit. The descent on alu rim was scary as wet roads and the rims started to get very very hot, I was pouring water from my bidon as we inched down, also avoiding the acres of cow poo

    Try the alternative start to the climb via the village of Grandiella which has a couple of ridiculous ramps at 30% which are harder than the long steep ramps near the top. The Vuelta will never go up this way as the road is way too narrow however.

    overall the Alto L'Angliru is NOT the hardest climb in Europe - it certainly has the HARDEST section of ANY climb I have ridden - but for overall PAIN - it has to be Monte Zoncolan from Ovario - NOT as steep as Angliru but overall it is consistently steep with countless unrelenting sustained sections in the15-22% gradients whereas the first 2/3 of the L'Angliru are comparatively timid - it is the final 1/3 that earns L'Angliru it's fearsome reputation and deservedly so - having done both I think I am more nervous about riding Zoncolan again - you feel like you are on the rivet the entire climb - the only respite you might get is some 50-100m sections in the 10% category that by then feel like RELIEF - as your reward at the end of those breather sections it usually walls with 20+% just to balance things out - Monte Zoncolan is the HARDEST climb in Europe imo

    I guess us from the UK are not going to be totally scared of the gradient as there are stupid steep climbs over this side of the pond we come across for short sectors. Its the pure length of the Angliru . Maybe fit a triple chainset for the occasion as back up if the legs start to fall off.

    I had the opportunity to go to Angliru on vacation this year climb it and see the stage of la vuelta.
    For those who say it's easy, it's not... although it's not one of the biggest climbs in Europe, it's tough if done at a world tour pace, it's not at a walking pace like we do
    I went up with a fairly large plate (36 large plate and 30 on the small plate) and I struggled a lot with my cadence (40 average) on slopes of 20%, if I had a bigger plate behind me it would have been much easier.
    I got tired of overtaking people on the way up, and even though people were already walking because they couldn't climb, I went to the top without putting my feet on the ground and only one person passed me... guess what... on an electric bike :D

    • @Shadowboost
      @Shadowboost Рік тому

      36/30 is pretty serious, especially on 20%. That low cadence is so hard
