His father was a clergyman, and as a result, Gilman’s early life was filled with frequent moves due to his father's work. Initially, Gilman pursued a conventional education and even enrolled at Oxford University. However, his passion for art soon took over, leading him to leave Oxford and instead study painting in 1896 at the Hastings School of Art. He later trained at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he developed his foundational skills.Artistic Development
