    I just spent almost $400 on the worst 'compost' ever trying to get my new garden started and this is blowing my mind. I'm going to spend the next few days watching your videos and researching more. I would love to grow a huge garden for all my neighbors to benefit from. Our native soil here is horrible and useless. It would be VERY informative to see what you do the year after, when the sawdust has partially broken down. Do you 'eject and discard' the contents of the growbox and fill it up with "all new", or do you add just sawdust (because the sand will not have gone away)? If you "top up" with the same sand+sawdust, in my experience, you end up with progressively more sand in the box, as the sawdust breaks down, but the sand does not... What are your thoughts on this, David? And .. how do you go about it? Thanks!

      Jim Kinnard’s video said to use no more than 15% sand in subsequent years. I’m going to take a can full of what’s currently in my bed, apply perlite and/or sawdust until I get the consistency David’s video shows here, and then apply the ratio to the entire bed. Since there is such a WIDE variation in “sawdust”, I’m hoping this will yield more consistent results.

    Thank you for posting this, I found it very interesting. I had always heard that this type of thing will rob nitrogen. I always thought it wouldn't be a problem as long as you were adding fertilizer. I think the difference between sawdust and wood chips is the sawdust is porous enough to allow the exchange of added fertilizer where the wood chips absorb it and lock it up.

    • @LDSPrepper
      @LDSPrepper  4 роки тому +4

      Good thinking. I've found the wood chips don't absorb the moisture like sawdust does so the water just runs through the soil so the plants don't get the water or nutrients they need.

  • @metamud8686
    @metamud8686 4 роки тому +1

    Shouldn't you have added pre-plant before filling the box? For empty boxes MGM says to put preplant down first, then the mix, then more preplant and weekly feed on top (and re-mantis).
    Also .. after one year, a lot of the sawdust will have decomposed. What do you recommend adding? Just fresh sawdust (then mantis) or do you top up with sawdust AND sand? I'm curious, because the sawdust decomposes, but sand does not, so if you were to add mix every year, you would get an increasingly bigger ratio of sand in your boxes...

    Okay so tell me what is the difference between using sand and sawdust, verses using your garden area that would be dirt, and either the sawdust or wood chips?
    Because you are not supposed to kill in the sawdust or wood chips into the dirt, due to nitrogen loss. So what is the difference between using them send and the sawdust?

If I wasn't doing what I'm doing now I would not be able to grow food when food may not be available. I hope you are doing what you need to be doing to be able to grow food in a SHTF when you can't get manure because your animals have been killed and taken so you have no fertilizer for your garden, when your soil is contaminated from nuclear fallout or other toxins falling from the sky and when there is a nuclear winter so you can't grow food outdoors.

The other caution is running a gas powered anything in you greenhouse, make sure you have plenty of fresh air ventilation or you could be overcome by the CO fumes. You can buy big bags of pure pine shavings for about 10 bucks.

    I really dont understand your logic about the wood chips. HugelKulture uses MUCH LARGER sources of wood and it is a fantastic way to keep your biodynamics in the garden working well. Surely the size of your wood chips is irrelevant long term. It all acts to feed the bugs. The smaller particles break down quicker thats all- then you have to replace it. After 1 year 2/3rd will be rotted down of the smaller stuff.

    • @LDSPrepper
      @LDSPrepper  4 роки тому +2

      I have studied HugelKulture for many years. You are correct after a year or more, typically more, the large wood chips can breakdown if buried in the dirt. During the breakdown period it does rob the soil of nitrogen. In this application we don't want to wait a year or longer to grow food so the sawdust works without the problems of HugelKulture.

      Yes, absolutely, but the good news is you don't have to. 97% of humans live in cities where pine needles and compost are not as easy to get as they are if you live in the mountains.
