It's Cottonwood season in the lower mainland British Columbia Canada, here they are just giant weeds, meaning the roots are spread just under the surface of the topsoil. I hope the rooting is better there for less erosion.

Almost everything done on this site has been wasted effort. Until the site is trapping water, nothing will grow. After it is trapping water, nature will do the work.
Attach a GPS gadget to the dozer blade to keep it at a certain absolute altitude, and then use it to drive terraces throughout the parcel, breaking up the caliche everywhere. Drive piles of rocks into the gullies every few yards to divert water out onto the terraces, and fill the gullies with cuttings to make running water drop its sediment, filling them. Dig deep ponds on high ground to bank water running off neighbors' land and attract birds. Fence out cattle.
