Paul wrote this letter to unify the churches in Rome and enlist their support for the work of God’s kingdom. He sees them as “partners to be” in his missionary work. That is his goal. And what is his solution to achieve this goal? His solution is to explain the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul had a very simple, very practical goal and his solution to reaching that goal was the gospel.
According to Paul, the way people are changed and unified for God’s ongoing kingdom work is: THE GOSPEL. Real life change occurs through the gospel, because it is the power of salvation for all who believe. We want to be a unified church that loves God and flourishes under his rule. The only way we get there is faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ. There are no shortcuts. There’s no 10-step program. We must believe that the gospel can truly change lives, because only in the gospel do we find the power of God for salvation.
