I really like it. Have played the record half a dozen times and really enjoyed it. The other discs in the box are great too, especially the sessions one. Bring on Queen II.
I can definitely hear what you’re saying. That’s the risk that’s run with these new mixes… sometimes it strips away everything that made the debut unique.
Drums are sooo crystal clear to the point I don’t like it. Sounds more like a 2020’s rock band (nothing against it, it’s just not what I want to hear in Queen). And of course, the pitch correction is a crime
The drums were one of the biggest changes (aside from pitch correcting Freddie, of course). I don't mind them, but they are jarring at first after listening to the original for so long.
I've heard it...there has been a lot of tweaking going on with this remixed album, not just pitch correcting Freddie, which is just plain wrong. The timing, and some tuning, of many of the instruments has been altered. It's too "modern". It doesn't sound like an early '70s recording any more. I know the original album sounds a bit rough and ready, but it's a time capsule of a different era. I don't hate it, but the original release will do for me, thanks.
It’s definitely been stripped of a lot of its 70s sound which is a bummer. I agree… the original is representative of that era. This new mix feels like something totally different.
It would be a bit pointless though if it still sounded like a 70s album. I keep reading about pitch correction but no one actually links hard evidence to back it up. I can’t hear any pitch stuff and Ive listened to the new mix - vinyl & CD - half a dozen times, both on headphones and without 🤷♂️
@@ConstableHandsy a British UA-camr called Wings Of Pegasus has done a video on it. Another person mentioned in their review that the new remix in regards to Freddie's voice sounds too perfect. It sounded more raw in the original mix
I'm A Man is actually a Bob Diddley song. It's not the Spencer Davis Group song. I already have the Live At Rainbow concert on dvd and a BBC cd. So, I will be getting the one disc version
Pitch correction of Freddie is totally NOT needed. Drums now sound sampled, too loud and compressed. Bass is recessed and missing in many songs. Some clarity in some of the quieter sections is good, but on the whole this is a pretty horrible release. I shall stick with the 2011 Deluxe release which is authentic and original. YMMV. Thanks for your thoughts,
Totally agree with you on the production. They cleaned up the drums but it doesn’t sound much better at all. The live stuff here is cool, but otherwise you’re better off with what you already own.
This new drum sound doesn’t work for me, sounds too synthetic and perfect and modern and it’s got some strange reverb that makes them sound out of place and disjointed from the songs. The snare sounds like Roger’s snare sounded from the game an onwards. The drums from the de Lane Lea demos sounds a million times better, they should have aimed to replicate that instead
I checked the 2011 remaster and the new remix version of Liar and to me it's sort of like the 2018 remix of Blind Guardian's Nightfall In Middle-Earth in a sense that it includes cut material and is cleaner but at times loses the feeling of the original. Another way I would compare it would be like if Bathory had modern production, it would be great to hear it in better detail but at the same time it might lose it's overall charm.
@@TheCDGuyJZ Must have been one of the few who got the first album when it was released (yes, I'm THAT old) and , honestly, I've never liked the drums. Charm or not of the old days, I much prefer how they sound now.
The boxset for unreleased stuff, Demos , instrumentals are worth buying .The whole remix album sounds fresh and breaths. Revealing hidden details. It is called Queen I because the original stays around. Many Remixed songs are marvelous!!!
Glad you're enjoying it! It definitely sets itself apart from the original. The demos, live stuff and unreleased material are what I'm more interested in.
I suppose a younger audience who grew up with auto tune, pitch correcting, and the computerized music will like the fakeness. I'll stick with my original beautiful vocals of Freddie with his passion and colorful expression that put so much emotion in every song. I'll leave the rubbish album for those who are into that sort of thing.
I grew up with all of that stuff but I still hate it. Overindulging the studio is one thing, but pitch correcting Freddie Mercury is a downright crime.
The originals will NOT always be around. They will only be around as long as physical media is around. At some point, it will become impossible to get hold of the original mixes of this album.
Then it has to become the job of the fans and collectors who care about these things to keep physical media relevant… Vinyl was down this year which is disheartening.
What are your thoughts on the new 2024 mix of Queen's debut album? Let me know down below!
Swings and roundabouts with the reason for a remix should have some point ,, Very happy with mine ,,60 tracks is great value
Enjoy your copy! It’s a great value for the live stuff alone… not overpriced compared to other boxsets these days either.
I really like it. Have played the record half a dozen times and really enjoyed it. The other discs in the box are great too, especially the sessions one. Bring on Queen II.
Pitch correcting Freddie means saving lots of money from my pocket.
I think I just stick with my vinyl. Totally not interested in AI and pitch correction. Freddie doesn’t need to be pitch-corrected.
Agreed. I’m really only interested in the live stuff here. I’d take the OG album any day of the week
Only interested in Hangman. The album sounds terrible. More like a “Remix”. I will also stick to the original
Calling it Queen I was also a bit odd.
Always just been known as simply Queen to me.
Nice review, I will stick with my 2011 cd remaster as my go-to.
Yeah I don’t know why they felt the need to add the “I” at the end… we all know what album it is lol
Your 2011 remaster is really all you need
The mix is clean and very clear but now lacks the low end and homeliness of the original.
I can definitely hear what you’re saying. That’s the risk that’s run with these new mixes… sometimes it strips away everything that made the debut unique.
Pitch correcting Freddy Mercury wasn't a choice, is a scandal, inexcusable and ruins the edition.
Drums are sooo crystal clear to the point I don’t like it. Sounds more like a 2020’s rock band (nothing against it, it’s just not what I want to hear in Queen). And of course, the pitch correction is a crime

Brian may said it now sounds the way they originally intended it to sound.
Yeah it’s definitely interesting to hear them go back and fine tune it after all this time.
That’s a hard hell to the NO!

Sony trying to recoup some of that billion dolla!

You’re 100% right… I was referencing the wrong song called I’m A Man lol that’s my bad

That’s a really good comparison. Liar sounds totally different. I dig this version tho, but the original stuff has an undeniable charm.

One of the main objectives of the new mix was to fix the drums. They definitely sound different. Not nearly as muddled down in the mix.
Everytime he says "pitch correct" take a drink.
Don’t… you’ll be drunker than John Bonham and Keith Moon at happy hour

No. Definitely not.
It's not Spencer Davis Group's I'm a man. It's a cover of Muddy Waters.
You're right. That was my bad... I got it confused with the wrong I'm A Man.

Informative review but you need to speak more slowly, dude!
I had to listen to this on 0.75 play speed!
Yeah sorry I talk fast… I don’t even notice it lol
WHERE’S THE BOX SET? YOU DIDN’T SHOW THE CDs!
How many times do we have to go through this...
BRIAN MAY did a video on the box set
