I think he said all the need to tell a great story. Vary characters, play with the emotion of each one, represent their personality, create their strength and their weakness. Plant a serect for a single character in order to make him reveal it later in the story.
I think character rules is one of the most important ones.

Awesome and my kind of thinking too! When I started writing my web series I had to think: "What can I do that many others didn't when they started out?" Then I came up with not having romance at all, make a character that is so difficult to guess if he's bad or good even though his actions are very clear but his emotions and feelings aren't. A main character that isn't likeable or someone you can't dislike, he's just neutral but yet so important to the goal and story also characters. Sort of like the first Die Hard movie. Bruce Willis' character is neither good or bad. Even Breaking Bad Dean Norris' character isn't good or bad. He's a friend of the main character and yet he's a threat to him as well. You cannot hate or love him.
What's your web series? I'd like to check it out one day. Sounds interesting already.

Interesting delving into the components of great story. More Art or Science?
It's an interesting question. My feeling is that it's science when zoomed in, art when zoomed out. Truby had described story as 'structure in flow', which kind of expresses my point - we don't see the structure, which provides the power of the story, but the flowing makes it appear artistic.
Reservoir dogs and pulp fiction are perfect examples of movies that break screenplay story structure
They dont, they just mess with the displaying of the scenes, but the story itself follows a structure.
Well all stories have structure. Some stories just have unconventional structure

and yet...Transformers 1,2 and 3. even when i'm a fan of the franchise, i just don't care for these movies. now okay we can't like every movie. but what puzzles me is that people who like the movies have told me something like ''yeah the movie is stupid, many plot holes, bad characters. i love it' i just don't understand that, how can they see all the things why i (and others) dislike the movies yet still be entertained by them?

Indiana Jones 4, Star Wars I, The Frikkin' Dark Knight Rises... A lot of people hate these movies because of how THEY were written, but B$ gets a free pass that it WOULDN'T have gotten if they had any other director's name on it...
But was George Lucas a house hold name before the original Star Wars movie hit theaters? I don't recognize any of his work prior to that as a director, producer, or writer.
What is B$??
oh and to add to this, they dislike movies that do the same bad things...and then not like them. what do the Transformers movies do what Battlefield Earth, Batman & Robin and say Catwoman didn't do? these three are often seen as terrible yet don't get the 'yeah its terrible, i love it' free pass.

Guy walked into a bank in downtown New York City and talks to a loan officer. He tells him he wants to barrow $1000 bucks. Loan officer asks if he has an account at the bank? He says no and loan officer tells him that he can't make a loan without an account. The man demands to talk to the president. The guy gets into the office of the president of the bank and tell him he needs a $1000 for just 90 days and will pay it off before the 90 days is up and pay interest and has a brand new Prosch 911 he will leave as collateral and shows him the clear title for the car. The banker tells him bring the car in. The guy tells him the cars parked outside so the bank president goes outside and looks at the car, sure enough brand new with less than 5000 miles. Banker gives the guy the loan at 6% interest to be repaid within 90 days or he forfeit's the Prosch. The man agrees and leaves the bank with the $1000 in cash. Four weeks later the man returns and repays the $1000 plus $60 in interest and would like to get his car. The bank president tells him they have it parked in the banks secure parking garage under the bank and sends a teller down to pick the car up. While waiting for his car the bank president asked. Why would you put a $100,00 car up for collateral for a $1000 loan? The man tells him I just spent four weeks in Italy, where else in New York City could I have parked my car for $60!
