You forgot to mention the most impressive part about this game, it's all made by a single dude who is really active about bug reporting! It's truly incredible seeing the state the game is in and knowing it's a solo project

Is shocking this game has so little recognition in base building circles

Probably because people calling "clone" to anything resembles Rimworld. Just like what happened to Vintage Story, it is also not popular just because people called it "clone" even though it is much more difficult than Minecraft.
Which is why I love these underdog Indie games.

Fun review, though the last update changed how arenas work, you no longer have to supply hundreds of prisoners to the fighting games. Still, there is one hidden rule to despotism that will guarantee success: - A Luxury never introduced, is a luxury never yearned for.
You don't want to deal with public executions leading to revolt? Just never execute anyone. You don't want drunk hooligans smashing up the place and leaving ruined homes behind after a bad day at the bar? Call for prohibition before the first jug of that sweet sweet drug is produced. You want to get drunk? You have to be a soldier.
The people may grumble and murmur, but as long as their other needs are met their lives aren't worse for it. It might make it slower to grow since you can't get a big boost of popularity early, and have to use other amenities to boost your people's standard of living, but it is a path with a crown on your head, instead of your head on a pike.

This is a great little story that you tell about a game I'm a fan of.... Though I have no idea how Machiavelli fits in, you refer to chapter 17 of "The Prince" for, a quote? Idk, anyway it got me to click so I guess you got me.... Though that's just because i'm reading it in the context of political legitimacy..... anywho, fun little video, regardless of it having nothing to do with some fairly decent Italian author.

Haha, Fair enough and thanks for the comment. the Machiavelli aspect more refers to Machiavellianism in the Psychological way as opposed to Machiavelli's political ideals.

I was almost about to comment how awesome I managed to build my first city, but then I remembered how I edited the world map at the start of my playthrough to give myself every known resource on my capital city's map. After 60 hours in, I still can't tell if this was a game breaking cheat or not, but oh well... My trick is to never let the city grow too fast. Your eatery was a good example of how unlocking one thing can lead to meeting another requirement, but eateries you can do without. My 500 people still eat out of a warehouse and they're fine... mostly. Point is I rather tank the happiness hit than overbuild or overpopulate. That leads to save scumming and rage quitting which isn't good for my blood pressure. Just make sure you trade enough to always have money for a quick mercenary army to defend yourself and you'll be fine.
