This is the England we envied back then. Holidays in the UK was a dream. Remember this was 15 to 20 years after the end of WW2. England and much of Europe was rebuilt from the rubble thanks to the Marshall plan and Governments who were in general looked after the interest of their people. That is when America and England were great. It can happen again.
my mums last holliday in 1969,iwas only only 7 ,she died of cancer just after.i loved scarborough as a kid but i find it so difficult to watch these fantastic videos withought a tear in my eye, thanks so much for posting.

I lost my dear wife to cancer shortly after our last holiday in Scarborough 3 years ago . We loved that place and went every year . Now I can never go back there . Tears fell asleep I watched that .
Just come up in my feed. Great video - thank you so much for uploading! I went to Scarborough in the 60s every summer as a child. Lived abroad for many years. Since being back in the UK we go to Scarborough every 2 or 3 months. Yes it has lost so much but I still go for nostalgia and remember the past. Yes, as another post says, the cheap package holidays killed the great British seaside.
Spent a week at Colleys Cozy Camp in 1969 on holiday. And a few days in a B&B a year earlier. I was 8 years old and fell in love with Scarborough. Please Holme Park Naval battles, swimming in the lido, sailing on the Hispaniola on the Mere... magical! Visited there for a day trip last week. It is so much smaller, and a bit tacky... I felt robbed of some wonderful memories😪 but I think the difference is that at eight years old and during the 1960's the world was a wonderful place, rather than the world a sixty one year old sees in 2022!
My childhood seaside resort in "60 s ,went back 30 yrs later felt so sad and old ,The outdoor pool had gone and places bourded up.This brought tears to my eyes ( it was probably the music) Memories indeed.❤
Nice clip and the constant pics of how it is now.Nice one Scarborough council ,you should be proud of yourselves getting rid of such a spectacular pool.Letting it go to wrack and ruin does not take away the fact that YOU LET IT GET IN THAT CONDITION IN THE FIRST PLACE.
I grew up there on the south cliff, the pool was a hundred years old and the concrete was failing. few swam there as it was a cold pool and the local kids destroyed it in winter. it couldn't be kept going when the costs to clean out all the sand washed over into the pool every winter cost more than the pool made in a summer season. one year the main pool was around 6 foot deep instead 15-30. just like the north side and the mere things only have a finite lifespan.
Scarborough council has no interest in the history of the town, so many iconic buildings and attractions left to rot and then destroyed, memories are all that will be left soon.
Many Victorian seaside resorts suffered the same fate, it's a shame of course. I lived in Torquay, the Marine Spa was a particularly big architectural loss, but also the scene of a fatality in the swimming pool which sealed it's fate in the 70's.
@@leegreveson just looked it up as never been to Torquay till the past couple of yrs is im from up north but lived in bristol for the past 15 yrs ...been past the living coasts zoo and NEVER knew it was a lido / spa then the coral island complex before! shame that due to covid living coasts has now shut down and had to redistribute the animals .....wonder what will now take its place ...i do hope its something that will still attract the holiday / tourists for Torquay's economy and not just get bulldozed and made into more houses as so sadly happens these days as it is a prime location !
This was my home town where I grew up in the 1950s just before the cheap package holidays attracted people to go further afield. Interesting to see how many people flocked to this pool even just to watch the goings on. And the shots of it as it is now show nobody - not even the odd stray dog. What a terrible shame. I'm an old timer now - soon there won't be anyone who remembers when Scarborough was full of life - just a few videos on UA-cam.
I first came in `65 when 19 .It was full of life then .Next was 1967 and not again till `82 .I came every year from `82 till 2003 but felt by end of 90`s it was failing ,last popped in 2 years ago on a flying visit .Can that council not prune the trees along the Esplanade ? I`m an Edinburgh man and that would be like letting trees grow to block out view of castle .You can`t see Spa and the feature of Scarborough the bay for the trees . If council won`t help what chance do you have ?
I grew up near Scarborough, N Yorks was beautiful. Notice there was no obesity back then. All food was mostly organic, and everyone cooked from scratch.
It's not a bad idea but totally in the wrong place - who goes there at midnight? If the pool couldn't be saved (dubious) it should've been an adventure playground.
such a shame this has now gone along with so many other lidos/ pools that were in english resorts like blackpool , weston super mare , Morcambe and the new brighton lido along with a few others on merseyside ! even though weston is still standing ( partialy demolished inside ) AND BANKSY had is dismaland exibition there a few yrs back ......Im glad that some of the lidos have been regenerated even if they aint strictly in a seaside town like clifton in Bristol , Portishead or being restored like cleveland pools in bath!
These videos of past times are so sad when you see the good things we had that have been destroyed by stupid arrogant politicians both local and national.
All the people there enjoying themselves in the sunshine , look at it now and it’s soulless and empty , no one about , you’d think they would have kept a bloody swimming pool, your at the bloody seaside for crying out loud!!
The England I once knew gone forever except for the memories I fear for our childrens future on what's happening today and we all know why.

Love Scarborough..... it is sad how things change, not always for the better.❤

Where is or was, the Mere in Scarborough😂???
@@geoffreylaverne7859 The Mere is south of the town near the junction of Queen Margaret's Road and Seamer Road.

Lovely music to accompany this footage, sound quality excellent. Thank you for sharing. Lived in Scalby for 3 years, had to move on because of job.

I'm 69 years old now and must say although I saw the pool it was always empty each time we visited Scarborough so may have closed for good.
A really well put together video. Thanks.
Much appreciated!
Great heavens, imagine how COLLLLD it was!!! Glorious, though. Wish I could have seen it.

The opening sight of that ridiculous "Star Disc" turns my stomach; the South bay pool should have been saved.

Some fine specimen of men..on the diving board...😘😝
Scarborough loved it..
That diving board was 32 feet high so you needed a big pair of balls!!
it sucks that i wasn't bron at them times :*( loads of things have changed ever since the 20th centry
Such a shame everything gone from the town now. Nothing here now. Good days they were god bless scarborough
Marvellous was this filmed in the 1950s?
Is the tune based on "Without the Fanfare" by Mick Hanly (recorded by Mary Black in 1985)?

Grange Over Sands are close to getting full funding to refurbish the 1930's lido there!

Why did they do away with it ?
shame Scarborough council ruined it. the first pool of its kind in Europe.
