The fact that Hopsin ever signed with Ruthless just shows exactly how eager and naive young artists are to sign a deal. There is no way the average hiphop fan who knew anything about Tomica Wright would have ever thought Ruthless would be a good long term financial or business decision in the early 2000's. I would've rather signed to a label ran by Jerry Heller or an early Suge Knight! ...Okay maybe not Suge lol but at least those two did have success at one point. Tomica had nothing more than a reputation as someone who screwed over her late husband's children and ran a prospering record label into the ground, only to keep it alive by living off of the catelog of masters Ez left to her. Put it this way, Ez's children grew up in Compton wearing old hand-me-down clothes to school all while their fathers records and his artists records continued to go platinum over and over again for the next 20 years. Straight out of Compton hit #1 again on the charts in 2018 after the movie released and they never saw a dime. Low key though if both my boys grew up to be billionaires and they didn't look out for my kids after my untimely death id be upset. I'm not talking about giving them handouts but damn don't make them ask, buy them a 3-4 thousand dollar car when they turn 18, help them with rent on an apartment, just something to help them get started.

There's so much I disagree with this list. One thing must be noted, these independent hip hop labels are always being hunted when they get a buzz going. Big labels are always wanting to buy out small labels, quick example, when Master P refuse to sell No limit to universal, universal bought cash money and funded them and buried No limit. With that said I think No limit, Cash Morey, bad boy, Dipset, death row, shit even G-Unit were not flops. When them labels were hot at the moment they were launching individual careers and racking up gold and platinum plaques. Labels like RZA's label, Lil Kim's label, Def Jam south, bad boy south, black Wallstreet, etc. Those were flops cause them labels had little to no buzz going for them. One could argue about Shady/Aftermath, 50 had stellar career, Obie's was short and sweet, D12 can't hold their own without Em. Slaughterhouse had their own buzz going prior to being sign. Stat Qou is an urban legend by now.

There was this period in the early to mid 2000s where every rapper had to brag about having their own record label. These labels were usually owned by Sony, Warner, or Universal and were just a vanity project for the artist. They still signed acts and after a few years the label would fade into obscurity as the artist that headed the label faded into obscurity or the artist that headed the label was more interested in their own career than running a label. It kind of still happens now.
Mariah Carey had Crave Records at Sony Music. She had two acts, 7 Mile and Allure, one album for each, and the label was wrapped up in 5 years, just after she left Columbia/Sony.
Let's be honest here, Diddy & Biggie were like Dame Dash & Jay Z. Once Jay and Biggie left/Died, no one gives an F about Diddy & Dame as they are both jokes and terrible scouts of artists.

Honestly the Diplomats and the G Unit label still are relevant. Cam still has a strong following and 50 turned G Unit into movies, books etc.
