Coca-Cola has a branch of those under the Fanta brand, called Fanta Guaraná. The other is a extent to the passion fruit also very known here. Maracujá fruit is know for their calming effects, it's can also be bought on high concentrations as a calming medicine. Those tangs came straight from Brazil, its even in Portuguese hahaha We also don't have a word for lime or lemon. It's the same fruit for us, just different species of the same fruit. We call them "limão". Spelled something like "li-mam". Strawberries are called "morango", spelled like "mo-ringo" (google translate spelling helped me here).
I'd keep that 512Kx32 (12:50). That could be a memory module for some rare 286/386 mainboards, like the IBM PS/2 Model 50Z. If that's it, it is super hard to find.
Heh, I have a "few" of them - the 2Mb 85nS modules are my real "go-to" for the early PS/2s because it works on so many planars and expansion adapters. I've got a bag of those. For that header to add a PCB with socket adapter(s), a board could even be made for PS/2 Model 80 modules (which were only in 1, 2, and 4Mb capacities) - Who has (rhetorical) a bunch of those around to test?

PS/2s also have such things as strange power supply connectors and even unique floppy drives, as well as the MCA bus. While Compaq and other clone and peripheral makers were standardizing, making parts cheaper, backwards-compatible and interoperable.
Adrian if you ever come to Spain and ask for "limón" they'll give you yellow lemon, we call the green variety "Lima" here in Spain. Love you videos, all the best.

@15:12 - There's an IBM FRU P/N on the module. Yes, there were 1Mb 72-pin SIMMs (and lower) for IBM PS/2s. I'm interested in sending you a sampling of modules to see what results they would have (the 'Presence Detect' scheme for modules that work in PS/2s is documented - but can vary from other manufacturers, of course). Modifying a higher capacity to work as a specific SIMM model by changing the "PD bits" is one of the "cool factors" with PS/2s!
Hey Adrian, these Tang seems Brazilian! (this is Portuguese!) Maracujá (very refreshing) is passion fruit and Guaraná is typical Amazon fruit (very energetic) For the record we have "kind of" a word for Lemon = Limão Siciliano and Lime is only Limão.
Another thing I came here to note is that at least in Brazil, Tang is not sugar free by default, like it apparently is in Mexico! Other than that, I love both Guarana and Passion fruit juices. If you're into iced teas, try adding some of the Guarana mix to it for a great time!

Those two miswired modules - I have something tingling in the depths of my brain about some weird system using the 72pin slot and memory form factor, but wired incompatibly, presumably out of spite. Mac VRAM maybe?
I totally forgot about the RAMCHECK. I had the pleasure of using one of those at a past job, working in I.T. at a big company. I was the workstation guy, and it saved me a bunch of time in keeping a variety of PC's going day to day. That tester is just great, lucky you for owning one. :-)
Tang - Ooof! Whenever I hear about Tang, I'm transported (mentally) back to the first time I gave blood. I didn't do very well, and the phlebotomist ended up cutting my donation short. I was feeling faint and woozy, and the staff decided that the best way to treat that was to make me drink three 9-ounce cups of ice-cold Tang, one after another. A few minutes and 27 ounces of sickly-sweet, orange awfulness later, I had gone from feeling faint and woozy to feeling faint and woozy and nauseous! By the grace of G-d, I neither passed out nor lost the contents of my stomach, and I was able to shakily leave the donor center on my own power about 20 minutes later. What's more, I have since donated blood successfully many times. But I will never forget that first time. Thanks, Tang...
The stick that failed might be a VRAM module. I found some of these fitted into Apple Macintosh computers to enhance the video resolution to more pixels or more colours. It might be worth your while to put in the number on one of the chips to see if there’s mention of it being used in a VRAM module. The later Macintosh computers used a 72-pin module that only worked in the VRAM slot.

the weird 512kx32 you should keep - that is probably something for either a Printer or some weird non x86 System (DEC ALPHA for example). You'll never know when you need them :)
When I saw a preview of the video which i see Adrian opening a box with Tang juice powder inside, i thought that a Brazilian Sent this to him, but interesting to see that even Brazilian flavours are avaliable in the US. That guaraná one is my favourite Tang flavour. I used to buy lotes of those at supermarkets and drink a lot.
My dad and I remember that time we bought a dubious 72-pin SIMM at a computer show in the mid-90's. The guy selling it was from what used to be Yugoslavia. That cursed RAM caused so many issues, random errors, etc. Wish I had a RAM tester back then. 😁

As someone with an absurd amount of 30 and 72 pin ram sitting around (along with tons of sdram), I’m incredibly jealous of this right now. I’ve been meaning to boot up some old computers I have kept around to get all that ram checked and labeled. I should probably sell the computers and just find one of these at some point.

Guarana is a very common soda flavor in South America. When I lived in Paraguay it was my go to, I like it better than Coke. The flavor as I would describe it is sort of apple-like, but different. Good stuff.
I've looked a bit at doing that. A big killer is getting those sockets. When available they are expensive. So expensive that it's often less money to buy a ramtester on ebay and harvest the sockets from it.
I really miss Tang. They went' out of Turkey years ago. They were the leader of the fruit flavored drink mixes but just disappeared with no apparent reason. I still have their glasses that came bundled with 5 packs.
About 72 pin FP and EDO RAM modules: EDO usually are used on Pentium era motherboards. Some later 486 motherboards could use EDO as well, although not common. And EDO often had to be used in pairs. 486 and earlier motherboards usually use FP RAM modules. Either 30 pin or 72 pins. There's passive 30 to 72 pin adapters that takes 4x 30 pin modules to make a full 32 bit wide 72 pin memory package. The north bridge, which houses the memory controller, is what's responsible for what's compatible on these motherboards. Modern processors nowadays have the north bridge chip integrated into the CPU itself, including the memory controller.
There are 1 MB PS/2 Simms. You may remember them from late 486 and Pentium boards, but their PS/2 name tells their origin in the IBM PS/2 line. IBM was eager to push 286 machines albeit 386 CPUs being available. And in my PS/2 Model 50Z (286 10 MHz w/ Microchannel) there was such a 1 MB module... which was totally fine given the architecture and the time period (1987). "Most PCs work with EDO"... 486 machines usually require FPM RAM. Only some rare ones can work with EDO, or partially with EDO (have such a board which likes EDO in only one slot).
Yeah, EDO compatibility is not a given. I don’t think any of my 486 boards will use it, and even a few of my Pentiums will lock up or fail the mem test with EDO.

Spanish has a unique word for lime, "lima" but it's usage varies. My understanding is that historically in Spain people have called limes "limones verdes", or "green lemons"; this tradition continues in parts of Latin America however, in Mexico the terms "limon" or "lima", are used interchangeably.
Lemons and limes are the same species. From a grower's point of view, it makes sense to use the terms interchangeably. It's old-time "marketing" that made the terms different in English.
@@squirlmy Completely True but much like how peaches and necturiens are the same species, ( as well as numerous other examples) lime and lemon cultivars are certainly not the same. Though the distinction is phenotypic rather than genetic, there is a quantifiable difference.
Most of those are from Brazil, we have a full assortment of flavors. Maracujá is Passion fruit. Try Caju (the fruit Cashew Nuts come from), it is wonderful.
Forgot: we do differentiate between Lemons (Limão) and Limes (Lima). But, for a reason I don't know, the fruit we call lemon ("Limão Tahiti") is in fact the Persian Lime. The Lemon you know in the US is uncommon, much more expensive and called "Limão Siciliano" (Sicilian Lemon)
My favorite online dictionary lists limonero, limón, and citrón as words for lemon in Spanish. Citrón is obviously cognate to the French word "Citroën" and well as the word Finns have loaned, "sitruuna".

Adrian, watch out for oddball modules intended for servers, workstations and minicomputers. Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC), Sun and HP are a few of the manufacturers of those. Your RAM tester may not know how to work with them, although they may have made another adapter for them. I worked with HP servers that used registered memory with an "R" designation, too.
The scrounger in me wonders if, with the RAM checker, you could identify which chips are bad on each SIMM and salvage the working chips? I know there are projects out there for retro systems that rely on salvaging second hand chips off SIMMs. Maybe they could be saved and "rise again" from their coffin like a silicon Dracula. :-D
These first Tang ones maybe are from Brazil. We have a lot of different flavors of Tang here in Brazil. Guaraná is a kind of energetic fruit we have here. We even have a Guaraná soda based.
I was often kind of fascinated by powdered drinks, but now I realise it’s not that different of an idea from squash or cordial - just dried out instead of merely concentrated.

In Spain's Spanish, Limón is Lemon and Lima is Lime. If you ask for Limón you will have always a Lemon, not a Lime. Also Tang is (or at least was in the 80s~90s) very common in Spain.
With my first PC, an EPSON with a Cyrix 486 50Mhz, I upgraded the RAM to 2x32MB SIMM modules as 64MB was the max the motherboard supported. I remember the RAM not being cheap. Almost $100 for the kit back in the 90's.
Seems like those tangs are a mixed set from Brazil and some other countries from Latin America. The maracujá and guaraná flavored ones are most likely from Brazil, I noticed some text written in portuguese on them. I'm not sure about spanish speaking countries, but in Brazil what is commonly called "limão" is indeed lime, or "limão taiti", not lemon or "limão siciliano" as it's called here. Maracujá is passion fruit aka Passiflora edulis. The fruit is very tasty and has a "sweet" and a "sour" variant, it's said to having a calming effect, although I'm not sure if the fruit itself does that if it's the infusion made from the leaves. Guaraná is, well, guarana aka Paullinia cupana. The fruit contains quite a bit of caffeine, it's used as an food additive in powder form, it's also used in many energy drinks and soft drinks.
Adrian love the videos, I'm surprised that videos that feature candy don't do as well. Different countries have different so allways interesting to see. I'd guess that the candy makes edible packageing
Confusing at times but I have heard people refer to "lemons" as "limas" in spanish. It would make sense if a Lime was a Lima and a Lemon was a Limon, but it seems a lime is a limon and a lemon is a lima.
As an owner of a Chroma DRAM tester with an almost identical feature set I can confidently say it's only a matter of time before you extended test all modules and record their minimum tested access times

We used to have Josta here in the states that was made with Guarana. It was my absolute favorite and I’ve been sad for two decades now that it was discontinued.
And that pair of 72pin modules which test as bad, could be some other type than regular SIMM. There were for example GVP accelerators for various Amiga models, and they IIRC used the same 72 pin form factor, but they were electronically incompatible.
In tourist spots in Mexico, of course, they know what gringos mean by "lemon". Technically the Spanish is more correct, limes and lemons are the same family and can be interbred. Lemons are basically just sour yellow limes. Of course whether the Tang product has anything to do with actual fruit is suspect, anyways.
I remember once very young in Portugal I’d picked a premature lemon from a lemon tree and was surprised it was basically like a lime. That’s when I started wondering if they were actually breeds of the same plant rather than related species. Everyone around me insisted I couldn’t be onto something because lemons weren’t limes! Oh boy did I feel vindicated when, years later, I learned they were in fact cultivars of the same species!

Normally they used weird modules until the 486 Era. These 2MB Modules are quite common tho.
The smaller ones are 1MB Each. There are also 16 and 32MB SDRAM.
I'd also double check ram that it says is bad in a computer until you're sure you can trust its report

The ability for that to detect reliable refresh rates is divine. Now you can order lots of old memory and handpick a group of the best performers.

My memories of Orange Tang marketing from the 60's is that it's what the astronauts drank. Talked my parents into buying a jar expecting it to taste like actual orange juice only to be bitterly disappointed.
That first 2MB 72-pin SIMM looks like the stock Chip RAM SIMM out of an Amiga 4000. Don't toss it!
As someone with an absurd amount of 30 and 72 pin ram sitting around (along with tons of sdram), I’m incredibly jealous of this right now. I’ve been meaning to boot up some old computers I have kept around to get all that ram checked and labeled. I should probably sell the computers and just find one of these at some point.

Guarana is a very common soda flavor in South America. When I lived in Paraguay it was my go to, I like it better than Coke. The flavor as I would describe it is sort of apple-like, but different. Good stuff.
I would love to see an open source version of that tool.
I've looked a bit at doing that. A big killer is getting those sockets. When available they are expensive. So expensive that it's often less money to buy a ramtester on ebay and harvest the sockets from it.

I really miss Tang. They went' out of Turkey years ago. They were the leader of the fruit flavored drink mixes but just disappeared with no apparent reason. I still have their glasses that came bundled with 5 packs.

About 72 pin FP and EDO RAM modules:
EDO usually are used on Pentium era motherboards. Some later 486 motherboards could use EDO as well, although not common. And EDO often had to be used in pairs.
486 and earlier motherboards usually use FP RAM modules. Either 30 pin or 72 pins. There's passive 30 to 72 pin adapters that takes 4x 30 pin modules to make a full 32 bit wide 72 pin memory package.
The north bridge, which houses the memory controller, is what's responsible for what's compatible on these motherboards. Modern processors nowadays have the north bridge chip integrated into the CPU itself, including the memory controller.

These TANG flavors are from Brazil. Maracuja is passion fruit, limão is lemon, guarná is an amazon fruit very popular here in brazil. Enjoy it

There are 1 MB PS/2 Simms. You may remember them from late 486 and Pentium boards, but their PS/2 name tells their origin in the IBM PS/2 line. IBM was eager to push 286 machines albeit 386 CPUs being available. And in my PS/2 Model 50Z (286 10 MHz w/ Microchannel) there was such a 1 MB module... which was totally fine given the architecture and the time period (1987).
"Most PCs work with EDO"... 486 machines usually require FPM RAM. Only some rare ones can work with EDO, or partially with EDO (have such a board which likes EDO in only one slot).
Yeah, EDO compatibility is not a given. I don’t think any of my 486 boards will use it, and even a few of my Pentiums will lock up or fail the mem test with EDO.
Those Tang are from Brazil, Maracujá is Passion fruit and Guaraná (that is endemic from here) is used to make sodas/carbonated drinks (non-alcoholic) and other things also

Hi Adrian, Lemon is lemon and Lime is Lima in Spanish. Based on those fruit flavors they may be from some south American country like Uruguay or Argentina.
Spanish has a unique word for lime, "lima" but it's usage varies. My understanding is that historically in Spain people have called limes "limones verdes", or "green lemons"; this tradition continues in parts of Latin America however, in Mexico the terms "limon" or "lima", are used interchangeably.
Lemons and limes are the same species. From a grower's point of view, it makes sense to use the terms interchangeably. It's old-time "marketing" that made the terms different in English.
@@squirlmy Completely True but much like how peaches and necturiens are the same species, ( as well as numerous other examples) lime and lemon cultivars are certainly not the same. Though the distinction is phenotypic rather than genetic, there is a quantifiable difference.
Most of those are from Brazil, we have a full assortment of flavors. Maracujá is Passion fruit. Try Caju (the fruit Cashew Nuts come from), it is wonderful.
Forgot: we do differentiate between Lemons (Limão) and Limes (Lima). But, for a reason I don't know, the fruit we call lemon ("Limão Tahiti") is in fact the Persian Lime. The Lemon you know in the US is uncommon, much more expensive and called "Limão Siciliano" (Sicilian Lemon)
I remember going to computer fairs in the 90s and the guys selling RAM would have these and would test RAM when you bought it.
A label maker would be good too.
They used to also make grape tang as well as orange. k back in the late 70's Don't remember when it was discontinued.

My favorite online dictionary lists limonero, limón, and citrón as words for lemon in Spanish. Citrón is obviously cognate to the French word "Citroën" and well as the word Finns have loaned, "sitruuna".

Adrian, watch out for oddball modules intended for servers, workstations and minicomputers. Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC), Sun and HP are a few of the manufacturers of those. Your RAM tester may not know how to work with them, although they may have made another adapter for them. I worked with HP servers that used registered memory with an "R" designation, too.

The scrounger in me wonders if, with the RAM checker, you could identify which chips are bad on each SIMM and salvage the working chips? I know there are projects out there for retro systems that rely on salvaging second hand chips off SIMMs. Maybe they could be saved and "rise again" from their coffin like a silicon Dracula. :-D

These first Tang ones maybe are from Brazil. We have a lot of different flavors of Tang here in Brazil. Guaraná is a kind of energetic fruit we have here. We even have a Guaraná soda based.
I was often kind of fascinated by powdered drinks, but now I realise it’s not that different of an idea from squash or cordial - just dried out instead of merely concentrated.
Maracujá is sour passion fruit in Portuguese, I don’t know if it’s the same in Spanish. Guaraná is an Amazon fruit. Soft drinks made from guaraná are very common in Brazil.
Tang is available in Brazil too, but is pure sugar with an random flavour, not recommended for who have diabetes type 2, like me. Cheers!
In Spain's Spanish, Limón is Lemon and Lima is Lime. If you ask for Limón you will have always a Lemon, not a Lime. Also Tang is (or at least was in the 80s~90s) very common in Spain.

With my first PC, an EPSON with a Cyrix 486 50Mhz, I upgraded the RAM to 2x32MB SIMM modules as 64MB was the max the motherboard supported. I remember the RAM not being cheap. Almost $100 for the kit back in the 90's.
Seems like those tangs are a mixed set from Brazil and some other countries from Latin America. The maracujá and guaraná flavored ones are most likely from Brazil, I noticed some text written in portuguese on them. I'm not sure about spanish speaking countries, but in Brazil what is commonly called "limão" is indeed lime, or "limão taiti", not lemon or "limão siciliano" as it's called here.
Maracujá is passion fruit aka Passiflora edulis. The fruit is very tasty and has a "sweet" and a "sour" variant, it's said to having a calming effect, although I'm not sure if the fruit itself does that if it's the infusion made from the leaves. Guaraná is, well, guarana aka Paullinia cupana. The fruit contains quite a bit of caffeine, it's used as an food additive in powder form, it's also used in many energy drinks and soft drinks.
Adrian love the videos, I'm surprised that videos that feature candy don't do as well. Different countries have different so allways interesting to see. I'd guess that the candy makes edible packageing

Confusing at times but I have heard people refer to "lemons" as "limas" in spanish. It would make sense if a Lime was a Lima and a Lemon was a Limon, but it seems a lime is a limon and a lemon is a lima.
As an owner of a Chroma DRAM tester with an almost identical feature set I can confidently say it's only a matter of time before you extended test all modules and record their minimum tested access times

A good approach might be to use the basic test for go / no-go sorting, then run the extensive test to sort by speed.

At 11:48 the module has what looks like an HP part number format (A1219-60001), possibly it comes out of something like an old printer.

We used to have Josta here in the states that was made with Guarana. It was my absolute favorite and I’ve been sad for two decades now that it was discontinued.

That first 2MB module can probably be used in Amiga 4000 Rev. B boards as chip RAM. Mine has a module exactly like that. So do not throw it away. :)
And that pair of 72pin modules which test as bad, could be some other type than regular SIMM. There were for example GVP accelerators for various Amiga models, and they IIRC used the same 72 pin form factor, but they were electronically incompatible.
It'll be SIMM City with all the RAM testing you'll be doing with this adaptor added to the kit... :D

In tourist spots in Mexico, of course, they know what gringos mean by "lemon". Technically the Spanish is more correct, limes and lemons are the same family and can be interbred. Lemons are basically just sour yellow limes. Of course whether the Tang product has anything to do with actual fruit is suspect, anyways.
I remember once very young in Portugal I’d picked a premature lemon from a lemon tree and was surprised it was basically like a lime. That’s when I started wondering if they were actually breeds of the same plant rather than related species. Everyone around me insisted I couldn’t be onto something because lemons weren’t limes! Oh boy did I feel vindicated when, years later, I learned they were in fact cultivars of the same species!
