What a man. A down to earth superstar. True legend of the game.
We often walked home together after a match at Cambridge wilf carrying his boots
Unlike todays footballers with fancy haircuts, multiple tattoos, flash cars, wag etc...
I used to see him often walking around Marton/Nunthorpe where his grandkids would play football with us, he was always smiling and friendly. I knew who he was but I was too young to understand what a legend he was, wished I'd have the opportunity to speak to him when I was a bit older.
Great to know he got his testimonial after so many years!
That’s my old school right next door to Ayresome Park. Played football in that yard circa 82-86!
I am one of the kids playing football.
Must be great to see yourself in something like this, John! Hope it brought back great memories.
He's my grat grat uncle I never got to see him but I miss him
Working as a labourer. Different world.
Lovely man I remember eating corn flakes in his kitchen on Newmarket rd Cambridge I was 11 yrs old
"Wilf Mannion, now a labourer, once the golden boy of the back pages..." Can't help thinking that this short video should be required viewing for the current generation of Premier League stars?!
One of the things I regret from my one and only long overdue visit to Ayresome Park in 1995, is that I did not try to meet Wilf Mannion. I got to meet and have a photo of me and Bryan Robson, but I obviously should have tried to find the legend from the South Bank.
I remember my late father telling me about Mannion , if i remember correctly i think he saw him live playing for Middlesbrough before my father joined the RAF , not entirely sure however i remember being told he was some player and showing me a photo of mannion from the newspapers that he had cut out as a boy , i think he had many. Always remember my Dad showing me a photo of Tom Finney the Preston Plumber remember it like yesterday. I loved all the stories about the players i was told back then.
At 5:36 ..... Jesus, that was some clash of heads.
Hello, I'm Wilf Mannion...... HELLO!!!!!
(9:22) The crux of the matter, there.
Not in any managerial, training, or even a position on a board?
South Bank is largely demolished now and neglected by successive councils and the govt's "Levelling Up" programme. Tragic end to a golden working class place
2:46. ....football, the only rival religion.
Did he run a pub onçe ?
Did he ever get that testimonial? If not shame on boro! Shame on football.
quick google search shows he eventually (thankfully) got one in 1983, 5 years after this was initially broadcast
Yes, joint testimonial with George Hardwick. Middlesbrough v England XI .
Robbed of his talent
Cambridge Utd legend rip wilf
We gave wilf a testimonial at Cambridge bless him , think it was 1958 wasn’t it Keith
Hate football now ,,, I used to love it ,,, dishonest people,, all about money now
