I'm a nerd for psychology, so I _understand_ it, but I absolutely don't empathize with it one tiny bit. We're one of the very few species of animal that have this trait. Even the animals that are literally designed to be killing machines don't exhibit this type of cruelty just for cruelty's sake. It seems to be a primate thing.

@@Lynda-s5b which you had to try to push yourself upwards on your legs. Death by hart attack was I suspect a quite common “ cause of death”. But the hart attack was the result of extended constant torture, and the stresses that it put upon the entire system. The braking of the legs to induce death was not a mercy but a convenience for the romans. Think about attempting to raise most of your weight upwards in an attempt to breath on two compound fractures. A final horrific act that physically would prevent the victim from being able to get sufficient oxygen, causing them to asphyxiate.
The roman executioners believed that Christ was actually dead, so they did not have to go to the trouble of breaking his shin bones, hence the doubtless regulation, spear to the hart, which produced both blood and plasma; a positive confirmation that he was truly dead.

Even more a grisly fact, when the coarse nails pierced the wrist it can penetrate the median nerve. This can send excruciating waves of pain through the body, and every time the condemned on the cross lifts up to get a breath, to stop his suffocation, it can start the process all over again. Truly an awful way to die.

The Romans actually always carried out scourging with the condemned stripped totally naked. Thus lashes from the flagellum inflicted wounds not merely to the back and shoulders, but also to the buttocks, thighs, belly, and even the genitals. Many modern authorities now suggest that, having been stripped fully naked for scourging, the condemned remained completely naked for the remainder of the crucifixion process. Therefore, when being publically paraded to the site of execution, carrying the pulum or wooden crossbeam, the condemned did so stark-naked.
In addition to men, the Romans crucified a lot of women, principaly slaves, but we don't have a handle on numbers due to the Romans not recording slave crucifixions by gender. When condemned to crucifixion, women were subjected to a similar process to men with two exceptions. Although stripped naked for scourging, a whip or cane was substituted for the vicious flagellum. Just like the men, the women remained completely naked thereafter. At this point they recieved another concession to their gender, they weren't made to carry the 40-50kg weight of the pulum, although they were still publically paraded to the site of their execution totally naked.

However in Judea the Romans apparently made a concession to the Jewish culture, in which public nakedness was particularly taboo, for fear of a public uprising of disgust at the sight of the condemned paraded naked through the streets. So after the scourging, the condemned person would be dressed again for the carrying of the crosspiece, and stripped naked at the site of crucifixion before being nailed to the cross. This is what happened to Jesus, as we are told that the soldiers divided his outer clothes among them, and cast lots for his seamless undergarment - probably a valuable item woven from very fine linen, as would have been worn by a high priest.

    • @LuvBorderCollies
      @LuvBorderCollies 3 місяці тому +4

The Jews would not tolerated parading totally naked people around Jerusalem and then put them on public display. Besides it'd be totally unnecessary plus the nasty wound to the groin area could easily put a person into shock and/or cardiac arrest. That would be counter-productive to the whole process.

To think the scourging Jesus of Nazareth endured was far worse than normal, that he had a crown of thorns pushed onto his head, and then he was walked to Golgotha. But his death came much more swiftly than the rebels he was sentenced to die alongside. It was likely no more than a few minutes that he was on there before his heart literally exploded, and he was taken down almost immediately, to be buried in an above ground tomb. Regardless of your opinion of his divinity, there seems to be the idea that though he was shown little mercy in life, he was allowed dignity in death.

Maybe we are all the same spirit or soul, and everything we do to eachother we are actually doing to ourselves, in a cosmic sense. 🤔

This is what the Lord Jesus Christ in his great love for us went through to pay our sin debt. A debt we could never pay. Worse than even the crucifixion was the three hours he hung in darkness and suffered the wrath of the Father which we can avoid if we realize that we all are sinners in desperate need of a savior. We have to accept this free gift of salvation individually in this life.

What debt?! Isn’t it odd to first make up a ton of rules that he knows we cannot follow and that “sacrifice” himself to pay our “debt”. So three hours on a wooden contraption, the same ordeal hundreds or maybe even thousand of others have gone through, not to mention the thousands of people tortured and murdered by christians, would wipe out what we had “sinned”.
This is the most revolting part in the christian religion - “I did this for you and now you are my slave and personal item forever ….”

I struggle to understand how truly wicked many people have been and must still be today. It's
....I don't have the words to describe my feelings. This hideous death was how humans treated Jesus, the man that God sent to save us all. And this was how he suffered! ? Unbelievable yet it happened. Him, and the multitude of others,! I'm aghast at the cruelty of humanity. Yet we can be forgiven? How incredible God is, when so many humans have been so terrible. The rest of us poor slobs--well, an eternity of suffering apparently is not long enough to satisfy God. No forgiveness for us, ever. No matter what we did or how we lived our lives. But say the magic words and six hours of Jesus' suffering is sufficient to cover everything. You could be the absolute worst human being that ever did whose life had no redeeming value to any of your fellow humans, the kind of person that other people rejoice when they hear of your death, but should you turn to Jesus in the hour of your death, paradise is yours!

The report of “blood and water” coming from the wound being acceptable proof positive, that they had stabbed a corpse.
This may also have something to do with the Jewish laws of animal sacrifice, when it is not allowable that any bones of a sacrificial animal be broken, before or during, the sacrifice.

For one, how could a condemned man be tortured to the near point of death and then still be made to carry the crossbeam to the place of his execution? And nails were made of iron, which was a costly metal in those days. I know that they were often re-used. Anyway, it was a horrific way to die.

The hanging frames resembled telephone poles more than they resembled crosses. And sometimes, when the charge was _crimen maiestas_ (crime against the majesty of Rome, i.e., treason, sedition, and/or insurrection) the frame was a _tota crux:_ a cross or transomed pole with a _sedile_ that was equipped with an _acuta crux_ or pointed peg, astride of which the suspended individual would be seated.

It means that criminals who committed Crimes against the State and condemned to crucifixion were not just nailed up, they "rode" (cough) the peg. Seneca the Younger quoting Maecenas and responding to him says it best in Moral Epistles 101.10:14:
"'Go ahead, you may nail me up and set for my seat the point of the cross!' Is it worth while to press one's own wound and hang impaled on a gibbet, in order to postpone something which is the balm of troubles, the end of punishment?"
In case you didn't get the point, Justin Martyr also talks about the peg, or "riding point" of the cross which he describes as a Monokeratos 🦏 (rhinoceros) horn in his Dialogue with Trypho 91.1-2:
"... and one in the middle which looks like a horn and even projects like a horn, on which "ride" those who are crucified/crucifying themselves..."

The asphyxiation part as primary cause of death has apparently been discredited in 2023 after analysis of medical literature.

      @@pacovl46 oh really? That's interesting!
What did that analysis conclude the primary cause of death to be?

@JakeAtFlashback my previous statement, as well as the reasons listed below, are all from the Wikipedia page on crucifixion. I haven't fact checked it, though.
There is scholarly support for several possible non-asphyxiation causes of death: heart failure or arrhythmia, hypovolemic shock, acidosis, dehydration, and pulmonary embolism. Death could result from any combination of those factors, or from other causes, including sepsis following infection due to the wounds caused by the nails or by the scourging that often preceded crucifixion, or from stabbing by the guard.
They did a test, though, where they bound someone to a cross with his arms stretched out at a 60 to 70 degree angle and hey had no trouble breathing at all, but there's some debate about how their feet were placed in that test, apparently it wasn't exactly like on a cross. So that might have had an effect on their possibility to breathe normally.

if there was a foot rest on the cross it wouldnt be as bad than if there wasnt one also i believe the brazen bull death is worse than a crucifixion that has a foot rest

    Excruciating.
Latin root meaning out of the cross.
Cross was so reviled by Rome itself it was much like the C word of today.
I have a doctorate in philosophy and theology... not that it matters but I have done hundreds of hours of reading regarding crucifixion...
    It's just so perfectly sadistic...
Once the ulnar is ruptured... and the spike is hammered through the wrist ( specifically the space of destot a cartilage in the wrist) it causes debilitating heat to transverse the arms.. same as the planter nerve rupture in the foot.
Jesus died in modern terms of a pericardial rupture due to the spear...
My blessed savior wept in gethsemane... poured blood for our forgiveness...
    Great video sir

Just by the title alone I can say WRONG. I know exactly how bad crucifixion is. There are medical videos out that explain it in great detail.
