I live in the US so this doesn’t apply to me but it’s nice to hear that no one is losing their job at least for the time being

Scrapping the closure of ticket offices - delighted! I hate those damn machines, often placed where the sunlight or room lighting glare makes the screen illegible- assuming the text on it was big enough to read! Staff cut-backs have already started - with the reduction in numbers of services at weekends, on the WCML.

Great to see an episode of Gauge the issue. I'm relieved at the news. If anything I'd like to see more offices staffed.

This is definitely good news. My reasons why were pretty much summed up by you in the previous edition talking about this.

We need ticket offices when we have such appallingly over complex fare structures.

Good news. If you are passing through Farringdon you can break journey (ticket permitting) and enjoy a pint of Spitfire in the Betsey Trotwood. I do it going to and from Kings Cross, and know I can do it because a member of staff once explained that Farringdon & Kings Cross are counted as a single station, so I can walk between the two (or catch a bus) and my ticket will be valid at either.

Hopefully someone gets around to dealing with all the railway shenanigans. It needs to stop sooner or later hopefully sooner.

Yay for job security, yay for inclusion and unrestriction, and above all for this channel at least, yay for the pint of Spitfire in the pub. Normality is back! Ahhh, the karmic circle closes.

This is the problem with re-nationalising the railways in the UK. No post-WW2 government has ever treated the railways with the respect it deserves. It ends up not with the DfT in control, but the Treasury - and they are only interested in the bottom line. If they think the railways are costing too much, they'll make demands which the DfT have to try to somehow manage via the (not as autonomous as the government would like us to believe) RDG. Expect more of this until things are re-privatised again at some point in the (probably) distant future.

i wish wed just actually privatise the railways. not this franchise rubbish
the pre ww2 companies which owned their tracks/trains/signals/stations/boats and hotels etc and ran those things delivered the worlds best railway system.
br eviscerated it. both parties are to blame. labour closed by a looooong way more stations and miles. conservatives cancelled advancements like the apt and flogged the ships etc. so between them we went from a joined up transport service where the lner for eg could take you from rothesay to romford all on its own trains and boats to a disjointed mess with less coverage.
but the moral of that is "get government to run it=get government results."
we should just follow japan and fully privatise.
of course there is one group to blame in addition, for whom people such as beeching (who closed precisely zero stations and route miles) are scapegoated, and that would be drumroll=voters. this is a democracy, elections have consequences. if barbara castle closes your station (for eg) and you vote labour then being mad that tom fraser has closed another station is asinine etc etc and c...

@@andrewyoung1904 japan isn't fully private though, State owned JRTT handles Shinkansen construction among other projects. JR freight is state owned as are JR Shikoku and JR Hokkaido. Switzerland has the state owned SBB providing world class service and Finland seems fine with VR. The big four closed 1300 miles of line between the wars and japan has closed 44 lines since 2000.
privatisation vs nationalisation fundamentally comes down to what you what the railways to be motivated by more. profit motivated or state motivated.
we're never getting a good service regardless of ownership if the government is hostile to the provision of one.

Some Ticket Offices sell only 1 ticket a day. However having a staff member on duty means toilets can be left open and clean.

Ok to be brutally honest I think this was a good step in the right direction for the railways to take. and I also understand why people say that it is in the best interests of the railway to close them but I think it should be within moderate steps. like some stations don't need to have a ticket office per se. I mean my local station hasn't had somebody in the tickets booth for close to a decade now if not more. but a station for the lines still has theres. so I think it is possible to have both no take it offers and a ticket office where you need them.
but I also think that comparing the cost cuttings to Dr beechings cost cutting measures is a valuable argument here. because he was very short-sighted because he didn't have all the facts. he was after all just a mathematician and had absolutely zero experience with the railway so you can't really blame the guy.
but the point I'm trying to make is if you want to cut costs you are going to have to also deal with the Enormous backlash that it comes with publicly. sometimes you're just going to have to tough out a situation financially because you can't cut down everything because it would be more damaging in the long term.
and if anybody who is in The Railway Industries reads this comment just take this piece of advice: think like an average railway passenger and not like a guy who has to make these decisions. I think it will give you a clear head on what you can cut and what you can't cut. heck if you truly want to cut something maybe cut your own salary down ( that was a joke).
but anyway I am glad that many people will still be employed and it will be a lot safer on stations with them.
let's just hope when they go national again that they don't make the same mistakes as the previous nationalized network.

I'm over the moon to think my (and many other's responses) might've actually made a difference.
i really hope that the glimers of hope for safeguarding the Manchester section of hs2 go in a similar direction.
im studying for a mechanical engineering degree with hopes of working in the railway industry so I'll take any good news i can get.
the main reason i want to be involved is because i believe the railways are a vital part of modern society whether its climate change, mobility, or public heath. the railways are key.
the railway to me is a public service and any changes that take away somones ability to acces it is unimaginably short sighted if not cruel.
I've been helped many times by station staff even though my ADHD is much more self manageable than other peoples disabilities when it comes to getting around.
my parents have now decided that they need to move to a town with a walking distance bus or train station because they're concerned about what will happen when my grandmother is unable to drive.
so i think we should allow ourselves this happiness and it should remind us all to have hope for our future.
now im going to have some apple juice with my dinner :^)
