Hello Steve, my mother worked on building Lancasters at the Yeadon Avro Works outside of Leeds as a young woman during the war years. She always said they were green on the inside.
I'm just going to postulate that in my life time, there will be fewer of these kits finished than there were actual Lancasters built during the war. Most of them will remain in dusty boxes on shelves having been the basis for aggrandising youtube multipart yawnfest "unboxing" videos. Great to see one being built by a quality builder in a welcome, God's-own, no-nonsense, down to earth approach.
I couldn’t agree more. I made myself unpopular at the then wingnut wings stand at Telford when this model was at test shot stage and commented that most of what was produced would end up as loft insulation. Sadly that’s almost certainly turned out to be the case.
After following you for a while now, I can barely stand to watch some other builders on you-tube. I hope you're happy. 🤣J/K. Seriously, your attention to detail is mind-boggling. I would love to see some of your work up close in person. (But there's an ocean in the way}
I think you are taking the right approach with this kit, Steve. Do it one subassembly at a time. It would be easy to get burnt out trying to do it all in one go.
Lol, I sure do hope you have display space planned for that monster Steve! It is going to be massive! Beautiful work as always, eagerly awaiting the next update!
Steve, you have made me want to take mine out now. So job accomplished! I fortunately have just the nose art section, so it should be an easier build for myself. As usual, thank you for sharing this wonderful build!👍🏾
Great job on the bomb office Steve. An involved assembly. The front end fits really well to the cockpit assembly, and the outside fuselage shells looked like a good fit too. Encouraging! Cheers from Canada.
From what I understand, the interior nose colour was dependent on the manufacturer. The RAF, with early on Lancasters, demanded they be painted green. I also heard they stopped caring after 42/43 timeframe because they needed the planes as quick as they could get them. Personally, I like the look of the interior green. Brings a nice contrast to a kit like this.
I think that’s right Mike. it was a surprise to me that researching the subject showed such a lack of consensus - the Lanc is a pretty well known aircraft after all
I've had a good look inside G George the Lancaster Mk I currently not on display at the AWM in Canberra, and this aircraft is completely interior green throughout the fuselage.
Thanks for this series, I'm tackling this beautiful kit right now, and your videos are tremendously helpful. You mentioned about Wingnut Wings research about the interior colour.... where could I access any of their research? I find the Border Models instructions to be very deficient regarding colour call outs and any information about the aircraft.
Followed your Hood build, the subject wasn’t of interest to me however your skill and care was captivating and actually therapeutic. Needless to say a Lanc isn’t on my radar either however how can I not follow this build! P.S. I now have a 1/350 Hood in my stash 😂 Looking forward to further instalments.
Thanks Pete hope you enjoy the Hood - the 1/350 builds I to a nice model and can be made even more accurate depending on how much you want to do with it.
Hi Steve, That was a great lesson on dry brushing. The plane is coming along great,as do all your kits. I was wondering what kind of tweezers you use? I can’t find anything I like. Thanks again for doing these videos, they are a pleasure to watch!
Another great episode Steve, thank you for sharing this piece of inspiration. I have a question, having built the interior from the box would you build it the same or would you go for any aftermarket like an Airscale set or Quinta? Cheers Steve L
You’re welcome Steve - good question. On balance I’d build it from the box again. The Quinta stuff is nice but the Lanc set is very expensive and quite a bit of it (the radio operator and nav positions) won’t be properly seen on the finished model. The belts aren’t great in 3D and the levers are horrid, so that makes it £60 for an instrument panel and engineers panel. Careful use of the kit decals and hand painting can be made to look nearly as good as the 3D stuff IMO.
That is really excellent work, and inspires me to finally get on with mine, rather than looking at it in the box in the corner of the room! May I ask, please, what brand and shade of paint you are using for the internal green? You may already have said, in which case apologies that I missed it! Cheers.
Thanks David. The green is Tamiya acrylic cockpit green (XF71 from memory) with a drop or two of XF66 Light grey. XF71 is actually supposed to be a Japanese interior colour and is a bit too - well green - for the RAF shade. There are lots of other options in other manufacturers ranges though.
@@TheModelShed For the life of me I don’t understand how WNW went out of business. Yea,it was during Covid but with everyone at home that would give more time to build. They were the state of the art of model kits. Not even Tamiya made kits that accurate.
A little late to the comments party. This is too much kit fit the average/ somewhat experience modeller. That plus the price, make it easy to understand why so few are on YT. The kicker is that all that detail is lost when it’s assembled.. I built the nose section and was tested. I’m not sure why the side windows are separate parts. The blisters, I know… but it makes the assembly so much more difficult. I would also argue that the canopy is too thin. Making it very fragile. So, the complexity, the cost, the fragility and ultimately the finished size, make this an amazing but ultimately unattractive kit. Perhaps a multi pack kit? The nose, the fuselage. The wings… each as separate kits?
£620 if you can get the first release, BF010 kit. The Dambuster is still available, BF011 at a £595 rrp. Deals are to be had outwith trade. Buyer discretion is advisable. I managed to secure a BF010, the build in this video, via an ebay store when all UK allocations had been sold. £490 I believe including shipping. Bought it on my flexible friend for charge back protection having done all the research possible on the seller. I was advised of a 6 week lead time due to shipping from China. Very vocally nervous clack valve from the trouser department but little other option to secure one so proceeded. Arrived in 5 days in perfect condition. Total positive outcome. It did state model kit on shipping label, value £25. Lucky or brave, I'm not sure which...
Hello Steve, my mother worked on building Lancasters at the Yeadon Avro Works outside of Leeds as a young woman during the war years. She always said they were green on the inside.
Nice Andrew. I worked at Yeadon for a year or two in a hanger not far from the Avro works.

That’s a shame David I enjoy meeting fellow modellers at shows and the like. oh and sorry for messing up your viewing schedule 😬😂😂
I think you are taking the right approach with this kit, Steve. Do it one subassembly at a time. It would be easy to get burnt out trying to do it all in one go.
Yes theres lots to trip you up if you're not careful John. Not helped by the terrible instructions.
Lol, I sure do hope you have display space planned for that monster Steve! It is going to be massive! Beautiful work as always, eagerly awaiting the next update!
It's not mine Raleigh so it will be going back to its owner when done. I don't have anywhere to keep it unfortunately
Nice work Steve, the satisfying click when parts go into position, and all the detail painting, makes for a great video.
Love a click John

You're welcome - hope you enjoy the nose art build its a bit more manageable
Great job on the bomb office Steve. An involved assembly. The front end fits really well to the cockpit assembly, and the outside fuselage shells looked like a good fit too. Encouraging! Cheers from Canada.
Yes I'm happy enough with it so far Jeff. I think once I bottom the fuselage assembly it should be easier going
Dry brushing worked well Steve, really outstanding work overall....👌
Cheers Alan
you do motivate me to get mine on the bench with one caveat, you have a much bigger bench! I'm having issues just fitting my 1/48 Fortress
Yes I'm very lucky. Unfortunately I've nowhere to keep a big model like this so I'm glad its going back to its owner when its finished

stunning Build Steve

It's on the wing nut wings website which is still running. I think I searched Lancaster from their home page.

I can’t find anything I like.

Thanks Joe. The tweezers ar surgical forceps used in Ophthalmology. I was given them so wouldn't know where to replace them unfortunately

Brilliant build, so much detail, looking forward to seeing the next step.
Any news on the 1:700 Flyhawk kit ?
No I keep on looking at it and thinking I should get on with it. Maybe when the Tornado is off the bench

Steve, I have a project coming up in the near future. It calls for enamel paint, what enamel modeling paint would you recommend, Thanks, Vince
I rarely use enamels Vince - just the occasional tin of Humbrol. I find lacquer acrylics much more forgiving
@@TheModelShed Thanks Steve
Is this the Wingnut Wings kit that was unfinished before they closed their doors?
It is - shame wing nut wings didn't get round to passing the instruction manual over to Border

Kind regards Frank from Sweden
Acrylic Frank. I very rarely use any enamels

it’s not for everyone that’s for sure. I wouldn’t buy the kit for myself this is a build for a friend.
