I grew up hearing Anita Baker. Parents always played that when we were forced to clean. Looking back, it was an absolute blessing. I was exposed to black excellence and beauty growing up. Her voice became the soundtrack to my childhood and future motivation without me knowing.

+Bro Man...the talent is out there. It really is. Rap is what's hot and that's where the trends are. I miss the old BET because you heard gospel, hip hop, R&B/Soul, jazz and even reggae. I really think if the younger generation was exposed to other genres they would appreciate it. They just aren't being exposed to it because the media only promotes rap. Yet, if you dig...there is so much talent out there but because "the media" tries to tell us what's hot...they don't show all the great jazz/R&B/soul..that is out there. Plus, a lot of good stuff is coming out of countries outside of the US. I know a lot of musicians...they aren't famous because they aren't trying to be famous. They care about the art. But they are putting out great work.

When I was about 13, our family of 11 was gifted a lovely surprise Christmas from our social workers.
I remember our parents didn't know what the surprise was either, but they dressed us all ( 9 kids! ) in our Sunday Best and we pulled in our Van and went Downtown to the Pontchartrain Hotel.
I'd never been anyplace so Grand!!
We were shown to a penthouse suite with the most amazing panaramic view of the city!!
They served us yummy gormet hot chocolate and eggnog that I can't still taste 26 years later.
We still didn't know why we're here.
Then staff began to come in with gifts!! Just MOUNDS and MOUNDS of presents!!
We began to clap and jump my Momma had both hands covering her face with tears and my dad was just stunned!
The social workers came in and we thought this was the surprise!!
But NOPE! They were so excited and secretive saying this was only part!
A knock came at the door and they all hopped up and we're so excited we were like " what's next?!"
The door opened and it was ANITA BAKER!!! My Momma SCREAMED!!! LOL
This lovely lady had arranged this surprise after hearing somehow about our humble family in Detroit.
I'll never forget that Xmas.
She went out of her way to make our Xmas one to remember.
We never ever forgot it!!

I loved her speech. She recognizes there's a disconnect between the young and old, Young artists and Veterans. The older generation don't want to mature and guide.
