- How to develop an oatmeal glaze from recipes in books and how to test it over 5 other well known glazes. What to add, how much, all the test pieces fired to cone 6 and the kiln unpacking over several firings. Finished photos of all the pieces and the glaze recipes revealed.
Thanks for the video Vaughn. I've been wanting a cone 6 oatmeal for years. I used to use a cone 10 version in 1978. The folk art white really grabbed my attention. Your video work is excellent and I really appreciate your willingness to help other potters improve their wares. Hope to visit in the near future.
My favourite on the jars above is the Semi Matt Glaze, SMG. It is great on its own and over other glazes. They are all good and the Folk Art White is great on its own.
Wow, Vaughan! Thank you so much for sharing all your experiments. I'm going to try the satin matte glaze. All us Canadians recognize those Canadian Tire buckets. I have about 10 of them. 😊
Thanks for watching.
Thank you Vaughan for your videos I am blind and have been doing pottery for the las two years pinch pot, slab, slip and potters wheel and your explaining is great I love it so much. I live in Tasmania Australia
Thanks for appreciating the videos. Stay cool down there.
Well worth watching to the very end. Glaze combos and pots doing each other proud.
Now all I need is a black Ten Moku and I am back to where I was in 1973. They are a nice bunch of jars and no runs onto the shelves.
Thanks for sharing your test results and recipes! 👍
You are welcome
Thank you thank you!!! This video is invaluable information!! I'm sure I will be watching parts of it over again!
I enjoyed the kiln opening! Your beautiful work and all the good information has given me some courage to experiment. I appreciate your generosity
You are welcome.
Thank you for being so kind with your glazes, I will try some, greetings from Chile!
Thanks and good luck.
Thank you Vaughan very much. Really great to have this ceramic info and testing. I do appreciate your teaching here.
Thank you too. Let me know how you do.
Your channel is the greatest thing since sliced bread!
Thanks, multi grain of course.
Excellent Video, professionally made I couldn't stop watching. I will definitely make these glazes. Thank you.
Thanks.
Thank you for great tests with your glazes. I’ve been trying out glazes from both Mastering Glazes and John Britts Mid-range glazes and you have now given me more to test. Loved the oatmeal added over the already beautiful glazes. Thanks for that I’m ready to try start mixing.

Thanks, those books are my main stay too. Stay safe.
Such a beautiful studio and area to have it!
Thank you, we love it.
Thank you so much for sharing this wealth of info. You are making feel brave enough to try and make glaze for the first time!
It is very easy, use Mastering Cone 6 glazes
Thank you so much for generously sharing your results on these tests! I was thinking of working on an oatmeal but only throw in my spare time and sometimes the test process is a bit overwhelming. You have given me a good jumping off point to start my testing from. Thank you again! Subscribed and following!
Thanks and good luck testing.
I very much hope to come and visit one day and see your beautiful place!
We are all getting anxious hoping for an end to this pandemic, but our numbers are higher now than ever. I hope to see you.
Me too!
@@sallyweiner4180 All are welcome, tea on the deck.
Nice recipe glazes. I definitely like yours. I love the run in the colors. I'm Learning. DL2 is Beautiful! Satin Matte is spot on also.
Satin Matt is the best of the bunch, the tin oxide makes all the difference.
Great video! Loved the commentary along with seeing the tests. Great lesson!!!
Thank you Linda
Thank you for sharing. You have very nice hand writing!
Thanks
You have convinced me to try different oatmeal glazes! Thank you
My tests revealed that the glazes got much better the more tin I used in them. Between 3.5% up to
7 %. I did split by adding 3.5% of tin and titanium dioxide in a glaze that worked OK. The DL2 worked as a white opaque but did nothing to other glazes when used over them. Good luck
Amazing video. I love listening and watching your Videos Vaughan.
Thank you, I am trying to make them less boring without being pretentious. My wife still falls asleep every time. I should market them as bedtime stories.
They are NOT boring or pretentious. I find them informative and you obviously have a gift of gab. Nothing feels forced. Hopefully you can benefit from making these. We do
@@shanemilehi Thanks, I am hoping to make a video of my wife's work soon.
Vaughn, have you ever done a video explaining what you do for record keeping of your glazes? You seem to have a great memory for those things. Can you demonstrate to those of us without good memories the important things to document for each glaze firing? Books and other pottery websites always recommend that detailed records about each glaze firing are a real help but I haven’t seen anyone explaining what exactly to keep track of. Thanks.
I am lucky to have built up in my mind what I need to know. I do keep a recipe book with a few notes on firing cycles. I was going to do a bunch of glaze videos this winter so we will see where that leads. Thanks.
Beautiful results. I love them all. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks
thanks so much for all this info! I use Folk Art Guild white a lot, love it, so stable. You did the work, now I will give them a try as combinations.
Let me know how you do.
Thank you so much!!! I am learning a ton from you, sure wish I lived near y’all. I’d be taking classes for sure
Thanks, Classes have all been cancelled until after the pandemic, I sold off 7 wheels and a slab roller. That's when I started the youtube videos.
Congrats!!! You broke 2K!!! Thank you so much for this oatmeal review. I've been looking through the several books I have purchased. I'm waiting on the electrician to show so I can figure out what kiln I can purchase.
The semi mat glaze with my additions is a keeper but the others are also good. The Val Cushing white is a good white with no additions. Thanks for watching and good luck with the kiln.
@@Vsmithpots And the kiln arrived yesterday. Now waiting on the electrician. I'm excited to start testing glazes.
@@rondacorkhill1654 How exciting. I am not sure if they still advise to do a test firing empty, to temper the elements before you fire with pots inside. Read the manual.
@@Vsmithpots apologize, didn't see this. Yes, I did fire it completely empty, with furniture. Not too excited to risk ruining my investment. I did purchase two advancer shelves because testing will be a big part of what I want to do. LOL
@@rondacorkhill1654 Good move. I hope you have fun.
Wow, I really like your work. Lovely graze combination. I think it took so many steps till this killen opening.
I am watching your channel from Japan, wishing to visit your studio or at least to have some one day. Great test of glazing🎵, really nice. Although I am not a potter, your channel is very interesting with lots of information.

Loving the FAW going to give that one a go soon!
Good luck if you are trying to pare down the number of glazes you are using! They are all wonderful in their own way. Thanks for sharing this with us. 🙂

I am so grateful to you for sharing your skill and patience. It’s like having a mentor at last! I wish other potters knew your video expertise as well. If you are still sharing the blue green copper glaze recipe, would love to have it as my Copper red or blue crazes on my b-mix and I don’t know why. How can it send my email to you? Bren in Texas
I added some Lithium and silica to my BGCR to stop the crazing. Just email me at vsmithpots@eastlink.ca
Thanks for sharing👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Try kitten’s clear I’ve been happy with it. Great over underglazing
I just down loaded the recipe. It looks nice but has some negative comments on thickness. That all depends on clay body and thickness of the glaze. My own clear goes cloudy if applied too thick.
Kitten's clear is my go to clear. I have never had it go cloudy. I mix it and take 300 ml, add 30 g of stain for a translucent color glaze. Bonus 🎨
Good Job Vaughan 👏
I love experimenting glazes as well.
And I like the fact that you are ready to share knowledge. 👍
Called you the other time from winnipeg.

I really enjoy your videos - your work, your explanations, and the beautiful scenery around your home that you share. One question - I don't understand what makes a glaze an "oatmeal" glaze. Is it the color, the texture, or the way it interacts with other glazes? Thanks!
All of the above. Any semi matt glaze with an opacifier added, a little iron for colouring and there you have it. Thanks.
That satin matt is definitely a great oatmeal glaze. I wonder if using zircopax (and some extra frit to counteract the refractory effect of zirconium) would be still as great. Would be much cheaper than tin.
I am addicted to Tin, I have never found a better opacifier.
The photographs of your pottery are superb! Can you make a video for us on how to photograph pottery?
I will do a quick one for you, it is simpler than it looks.
Hi Vaughan, thanks for your brilliant videos, so enjoyable. Could you point me in the right direction of your recipes please? I'm never very good at navigating!
Email me and I can send some photos of glaze pages. They are posted during the videos.
This was really great. I am not finding iron ochre, per se, I see iron oxide yellow. Would that be correct?
I have an old Oatmeal recipe from the 80's.. I really never knew what to do with it so I may experiment with that in combination over other glazes.
I think it is referred to as Yellow ochre. If you email me I can send you a jpg photo of Mouse grey glaze from my glaze book.
@@Vsmithpots thank you, but I was able to find field mouse brown in hesselberth and roy.
Now I am more concerned with what to do with the iron ochre you add to the white glazes get the the creamy tint.
For those 4 recipes bases, I have try them with oxides colorants? Like Cooper, cobalt, nickel.
Let me know what you get from them favourite was SMG with Tin Oxide 5% and a little Illmenite.
@@Vsmithpots what is SGM??
@@ozzig.2667 It is the Satin Matt Oatmeal glaze.
@@Vsmithpots thank you very much !
Just curious - have you ever tried glazing the matt glaze first with the other glaze over to see what kind of melt you'd get?
Yes I have, it never looks as good, that is of course a matter of opinion.
Hi Vaughn! Thanks for the very informative video. One question. I’d like to make the satin matte glaze base. Did this recipe always call for the tin and titanium, or was that something you added to enhance the glaze for an oatmeal version?
It was a satin matte base I found somewhere, I added 7% tin for the oatmeal, then adjusted to 3 1/2% tin and titanium.
@@Vsmithpots Thanks for clarifying Vaughn!
I an really enjoying your videos! You referred to the glaze recipes for these oatmeal glazes. I did not see them but I am
an "elder" ;-)) Where can I find them?
They are in the video at the 33 minute.
@@Vsmithpots Thank you so much. I will look again. Enjoying your videos much - your easy manner and "can-do" attitude are infectious.
Hi Vaughan, thx so much for your wonderful videos. Can you tell me how the addition of illmenite helps (affects) the oatmeal?
It adds speckles. Thanks.
I Vaughn, I watched you video on throwing bowls. I somehow missed how you make the notches in your noodle bowls. Can you tell me which video to watch to learn how to do that? Thanks, Lisa from Michigan…
I have so many videos now I forget where things are. All I do is place two fingers on the rim and use a paint brush to form a lip between the fingers.
Wonderful video! Thank you so much!
Thanks
I am confused, and my apologies if this is not appropriate here.
I have an old "Oatmeal" recipe from the 80's . In the past, I used it as a regular glaze, but it is horrible about flaking off as it dries, even with 2% bentonite. It gives a nice creamy matte result when dipped and fired.
Do you think your use of the term "Oatmeal" different? I have had a 10k gm batch mixed up for years a mostly avoid using it. Seems like a waste to abandon it. Any suggestions?
51.6 feldspar
5.6 flint
18.8 whiting
8.6 zinc ox
15.4 epk
Add 2.0 rutile, .75 nickel, 2 bentonite
The only thing I have used is Gum Arabic but it is expensive. I have a couple of glazes that flake too. I added a couple of pints Gum Arabic to a 5 gallon bucket of glaze and it stopped flaking. I also only apply the glaze thinly now. You could try CMC gum. It is usually the clay content that makes a glaze shrink lots.
Thank you. I will give it a try.
Update, sorry...I found it by going back in the video. Not to worry. I got it. Thank you.
I missed the second recipe :( Did anybody get it that can share it, please? It's the satin mat glaze that I missed.
Hi, Vaughan Will the glazes that you have described reach ^7/8 in an electric kiln? Yes, I know that I can test but I am in a community studio and although we do tests it is not always the thing for one person. BTW I follow all of your posts and even though I have been potting for a long time, there is always something new to learn
I have not tested them that high.
You make this look so easy! I was wondering where you buy your dry glaze supplies?
Pottery Supply House in Toronto. It only took 47 years to make it look easy.
Vaughan, I have never mixed my own glaze but would like to try an oatmeal. If you were making 2 kilos of glaze material, that would be about 4lb 7oz of dry material. How much water would I add? I only want 3 gallons of glaze. Probably a dumb question but ….
For 3 gallons of glaze you need to mix about 6kilos of dry material, then add 2 gallons of water and mix it up with the dry, sieve the glaze, adding a little of the remaining water at the end of sieving until you achieve a creamy consistency that covers your finger. It should not be milky. I mix the glazes thicker because it is hard to take water out if you make it too thin. When you glaze you have to refine the consistency. It should not be thick or it will flake off or crawl in the firing.

Thank you….can’t wait to try it!
Wonderful videos👍
Hi again, sorry to bother you. I'm in the UK and I wondered if you could tell me what exactly it says on your yellow iron oxide ochre packet please? There are variety of titles for this type of thing and I would like to try your satin matte glaze. Just trying to get the ingredients together. I haven't made a glaze from ingredients before! Thank you
It is most commonly known as Yellow Iron Oxide. I had some yellow ochre clay which contains yellow iron Oxide, I ran out of that so I will be ordering yellow Iron Oside.
Hi Vaughan, I've watched this video a few times since you posted it. I need an oatmeal glaze, but have had issues in the past. The main concern I have is with staining. I have a commercial oatmeal that I've been using for a long time, but I want to make my own. I would like to use it on the entire piece, such as a mug without having to use a liner glaze. Have you noticed any issues with DL2 staining? I'm going to run tests of course, but with so many glaze recipes I feel like it's going to take a while :) Thanks for all the videos and amazing info you are providing!
By staining do you mean adding commercial stains or the underneath glaze interacting with the oatmeal above, which is what I like to happen. They all seem to do that. I would try the SMO with 3 1/2% of both Tin Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Then increase the Tin and lower the other until you get the right opacity.
@@Vsmithpots Sorry, I meant staining like coffee stains inside of a mug. The oatmeal I currently use gets stained by coffee and tea really bad so I don't ever use it as a liner. I like the idea of the DL2 recipe because I probably won't need opacifiers on a lighter clay body. I plan on using DL2 by itself, so overlapping isn't an issue for me. Looks like it would be a great base glaze as well. The price of tin oxide is skyrocketing. Some suppliers are at $125/lb here in the US right now. So, I'm hoping to not use tin if possible at least until the price comes back down if it ever does.
@@johnc1136 I have other liner glazes I use regularly. I have not tried these on their own.
Hi again. Found this video with the recipes about the question I asked earlier. Did a screen shot of them, thank you. Also, when you refer to mouse brown are you referring to Field Mouse Brown on page 91 of the Mid Range Glazes by John Britt? And have you altered that one in any way to get those beautiful colors at 36:55 of the video on the garlic keeper? Thank you for responding.
It is just oatmeal over field mouse brown from Mastering Cone 6 Glazes.
