  • With a sad heart Pilot & Co-Pilot onboard this Lockheed 12A Electra Junior were killed Saturday afternoon June 15th 2024 when the aircraft crashed shortly after departing from Chino Airport, officials said. My thoughts & prayers go out to the families, friends & co-workers.
    Blue skies and tailwinds my friend R.I.P. I always enjoyed talking with Frank Wright over the years at the museum and he always treated me with such respect and kindness. Pilot-in-Command on this flight was Michael “Mike” Gilles & Yanks Chief Operating Officer Frank Wright.
    They both will be missed.
    This twin-engine Lockheed 12A crashed around 12:35 p.m., the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement. A spokesperson for the Chino Valley Fire District confirmed there were two fatalities in the incident. No additional people were onboard the plane, and no one on the ground was injured.

    Dan Gryder, a retired Delta Air Lines pilot and UA-cam personality who investigates aircraft accidents. In a social media post thanking first responders for their quick action, Gryder's adult son Dylan verified that his father was on board the aircraft.
    This accident marks the second accident involving an Electra Junior in the span of three days.
    Three people were on board the 1936 Electra Junior when it crashed during an attempt to land at Seven Lakes Airport (62GA) around 8.p.m. EDT, the FAA said. They were airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment of their injuries.
    UPDATE: The tailwheel appears unlocked in the landing video, this can happen even if you have the lever in the correct position as the locking pin is held in with a bungee cord that can fail.
