- A cut of Son of the Mask exists that is a vastly different movie. This is the first in a series of interview videos I did with my good friend and director Lawrence Guterman. We dive into why Son of the Mask turned out the way it did, but in this first part we talk about uncovering the #Sonofthemaskdirectorscut
This is fascinating. I’m glad more directors/creators are talking up more about their work getting screwed over by the studio in favour of being safe and meeting corporate demands. I wish the director all the best
Movie executives cutting movies in order to recoup more money within 12 showtimes a day is the reason why I never want to be a movie director.
One of the various reasons why I despise studio executives and their stupid decisions like this, I lost WB’s respect after their many screw ups with certain films in the DCEU and of course their really bad history of screwing over creatives and directors.
I think there have only been so many director cuts of movies in the past besides any recent movies like Justice League and any others coming soon by chance. i have come across others at thrift store in past but for any reason didnt grab at time. i am aware it dont happen often but guess for certain times it does. i by chance have 1 but have not seen it since got it but can see it anytime later. and guess it why they add parts to deleted scenes as extras sometimes.
I'm sure a lot is an excuse also, for bad results. Because most have to deal with this stuff.

We should start a petition to release this movie. I’d pay to watch it on UA-cam or a streaming service. I just really want to watch the version it was meant to be.
Possibly. But it would be very crude because it was on VHS. And I doubt they would take the time or money to re-cut the director's cut (the Snyder cut supposedly cost $50 million, and took 2 years), and it quite possible that a lot of the deleted footage has been thrown away, as they don't tend to save that stuff. That's actually how the term "left on the cutting room floor" came to be. Movies used to be shot on actual film, and the editors would literally cut, with scissors, the film at the point they wanted, and the part they didn't want, would fall to the floor, and then be swept up, and thrown away. It wasn't until laserdisc, and later DVD, where they actually thought it might be a good keep that stuff, and put it on as extra content, to give the consumer more of a reason to spend $25 on the movie.
Whatever the quality is, it’s 100% worth the release.

Rlly want to see that cut. Can tell that the director has a real sense of what he wanted for his movie and the heartbreak of not being able to present that vision makes me literally angry at whoever was the studio executive who botched the film.
It’s cool to hear you and the director talk about this film, particularly with the original cut. Studio interference really sucks.
Studios just act like parents and always think they know what watchers want anytime.

Also, little protip for future interviews like this; you should edit out the parts where the person pauses so there's not 3 seconds of silence halfway through a sentence.
They should really learn from the Snyder cut and realize fans want the full project, what the director originally intended for, great interview, really want to see this cut! 🔥
Watched son of the mask in theatres opening day with my uncle and will never forget that film. Good or bad i have always be yearning for a longer cut. This is sick!

I would love to see this cut, Son of the Mask was one of my favourite movies as a very young kid so the idea of seeing a more adult version that is a better movie is so exciting

When they explain the premise of son of the mask it kinda blew my mind. That movie was on repeat for me as a kid and I still have a soft spot for it but I’d love to see this cut.

We need to see the directors cut. I Saw Son of the Mask on base theatre when I was in the military with the CO & his tweens, I still remember how terrible and ridiculously bad it was.
We ALL hated it and left saying wtf was that. Haven’t seen it since then but have never wanted to… maybe I should re-watch as a stand alone

I’m commenting about 2/3 of the way through watching… and man, Jamie’s gotta feel vindicated, I mean, if you’ve watched his other videos talking about this… this is exactly what he was saying… and now having it confirmed and agreed about, by way of this unseen cut… like I said, vindication, yes, but OMG I see his brain just MELTING under the “what could have been” 🥲😔 Such a good feeling and such an awful feeling at the same time, and watching him process it right after watching it… oof, I feel for ya brother. And to think how *every damn movie somebody makes* probably has 30 different people’s fingers diggin’ around in it before it ever sees the light of day. I grew up loving Son of the Mask and would happily pay to see the Guterman Cut if anything to answer the question that has kept me up at night since I was eight years old... who IS a fish?

Very interesting hearing a director's point of view. I can see his image of what he was trying to go for. He sold me. If you guys ever decide to release it I'm definitely buying it. I remember watching it as a kid and I was really bored and lost, also, being a kid, I thought Jamie Kennedy was replacing Jim Carey's character and the wife from the second one was replacing Cameron Diaz's character. Like it's the same characters as the first one. Just with different actors and I thought the plot was their life after they got married. Once again I was a kid. I don't know why I thought that but safe to say I was confused with the movie's plot because I thought it was an extension of the first Mask.

I’m interested in seeing his cut but it’s really hard to believe that his cut is really that good I mean I think Jamie is over selling it because him as the mask was pretty bad even his voice was different

Someone needs to convince Warner Bros and New Line to release this version of the movie. A similar thing happened to Kangaroo Jack where a darker version was filmed but the studio was convinced to turn it into a family comedy

The difference was in kangaroo Jack's case. Very much saved the film. Even though it is the worst case example of a trailer completely lieing about a movie, several people came for a dancing rapping kangaroo movie, with 2 idiots chasing him.
Do wonder why they never pursed that move, as kangaroo jack was a small hit based off a lie.

Fun Fact, Jim Carrey was in some ads in Nintendo Power advertising a contest to be in "The Mask 2 starring Jim Carrey." Then there was this whole fiasco about the contest turning out to be crap because there WAS no "The Mask 2" with Jim Carrey in the works. Before the Sonic The Hedgehog movies became a hit, he didn't LIKE doing sequels (For context, he was in the magazine because The Mask had a Super Nintendo game).
The 90s were a great time for original movies. There was no need for sequels, because you had movie stars. And they would use thier last hit to propel their next movie. Sequels and franchises didn't really become the norm until the 2000s, when the movie star died out, and it became only about franchises. That's why you see all these superhero actors trying to act in non-MCU movies, and they're all bombing. Because audiences don't care about the actor playing Thor. They only care about Thor.

@@KevKlopper I have and it's a guilty pleasure of mine since I was a kid but look at the comparison he made to ZSJL compared to Josstice League. Both movies had their runtimes reduced and had more jokes added in which had no bearing to the plot. I think fans should be able to see it and be the judge of if it would be better or not. Since New Line is owned by wb now let's just look at the previous times they've fucked over a director. Basically any Snyder directors cut was better than what was released in theaters and for the Ayer Cut we don't know if we will get that but there's no doubt in my mind that it would be a massive improvement over Studio Squad. So I'm all for releasing TheGutermanCut. So how Jamie explained it they cut over 30 minutes of the plot and added more jokes from the baby and dog which audiences hated. I'm sure the original cut felt more natural 🤷🏼♂️
@@KevKlopper Also one point Jamie made in the video was their release date of February was awful which back then was basically a death sentence for movies. They were promised 4th of July weekend which was the defacto date for big blockbusters.
@KevKlopper agree I like the film years later but upon release it was a follow up to a jim Carrey vehicle it was an interesting movie but movie goers never demand a movie in the mask universe, if anything wanted a jim Carrey follow up, like all the sequels to jim Carey films proved it was a 90s thing and a jim Carrey thing. Nobody wants a diluted jim Carrey movie sequel with other actors

Yo the cut is never as good as Jamie hypes it up to be😂 I mean the og movie looked terrible, i don’t think everything bad about it came solely from studio interference. The shots and everything were so obnoxious.

I still remember seeing the trailer for the first time and being so disappointed. I thought everyone was recast because the whole movie would be about the baby and the dog anyway.

That's some impressive delusion.
I really do think and I really do hope that with Zack Snyder releasing his full cut of Justice League and the support he got for it to be released really opens up the possibilities for directors like Larry who never got to fulfil their full vision for their projects and able to release it in the way they intended.

Reviews, marketing, and release date in that order killed the film. If it got like 60-65% on RT, had better marketing connecting it to the first film, and a midsummer release for kids, like first film, SOTM would have made easy 80-90 mill. Maybe still borderline on profit, but back in those days 85 mill domestic, another 50-60 int’l, plus DVD would have meant profit. Classic case of studio killing their own hit movie.
Son of the mask is one THE worst movies i have ever seen. But with that said, this interview was fantastic, wish it was longer! Its obvious that you both are very proud of that cut
