    Awesome, a sequel to the series! This song is probably a good opportunity for me to stop Hetfielding my way through every riff, and adopt proper picking technique (unless, of course, I'm playing Metallica. In which case I SHOULD downpick).
    What I really appreciate about your explanation is that it's not a "open E string, third fret on the E string, then fifth fret on the E string" kind of instruction manual that is basically tablature read out loud; you take your time to go through the musical theory involved and provide further insight to WHY a particular riff is written the way it is. Thank you so much!

    • @olgak.1139

      Hetfielding it's a pretty good, interesting and hilarious term😁. The last month l pay more attention to the Number of the Beast album and surprise- surprise l find out that Cliff (RIP), since TNOTB is a part of his collection, used certain parts for all the 1st 3 albums of Metallica.

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah there are some cool little subtleties in this one (and a lot of their songs, really) so I find they're a good way to work on specific skills within the context of an actual song.
      LOL @ Hetfielding! The good thing about down picking though is that once you've built up the stamina and speed, you have a useful technique down - and even some Maiden songs use that sometimes! It's just good to have various picking patterns down so that you can use the most appropriate one for every situation 😊
      And as for the "reading tabs aloud" bit (that one made me laugh too) I actually wanted to purposely avoid doing that because that sort of thing makes me crazy 😄 I just can't follow like that...
      Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the great feedback! Cheers 🤜🤛

Also massive respect for including the tab in the description, it really is a must have for these videos to ensure people don't try and find another video with the tab. @@LicksOfTheBeast Very useful. I'm back playing guitar after a 25 year break when i decided that dance music was my passion, and spent all of my time learning turntables instead. Though i always regretted not putting more time into the guitar, so about 6 months ago i bought an ibanez gio and a jackson kelly ( my dream guitar) with a cheap marshall amp and set about trying to learn the music i loved before the 90's happened. I'm at a slight disadvantage has i had to have my little finger re attached to my hand after an accident, but thats a story for another day lol

    Great lesson man. Totally quintessential classic early Maiden. If someone asked me to point them to early Di'Anno Era material this would be where I'd tell them to start for sure. Last time I saw Maiden live was back on the Death On The Road tour at the MEN arena in Manchester England and the place erupted when they launched into this one! Not to overcomplicate things here, but, I do love how Adrian has modified how he plays this live and drop ds to give the song more bottom end. It sounds brutal live these days when they include it in the set. You picked a really good one here man. This was one of the first I learned back when I was starting out. Not too difficult, but challenging enough that you feel really accomplished when you get it down.

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  3 роки тому +3

      Adrian's little embellishments have added so much since BNW - especially live!
      I find that learning these songs with focus on the rhythm guitar parts will really help players develop real usable skills in a musical context...and that will be useful even when learning the solos once they get there. 😊

    • @tomdurkin5149
      @tomdurkin5149 3 роки тому +1

      @@LicksOfTheBeast it still amazes me that as innovative as Adrian is he'd never really experimented with drop d until he played with Bruce and met Roy Z. I love his Welcome To Tbe World album with his Psycho Motel outfit. Some really nice grooves on that record! Obviously he hasn't brought that level of heaviness to Maiden upon returning but there's definitely more meat on their bones live now and I think Adrian is more responsible for the layering of their sound live than anybody else. I like how they've calmed the tempo a bit live now too. I know that was a source of contention for Adrian and a factor in his departure. I'm sure age has played a part of course but I can't help but feel that as Steve has mellowed with age that perhaps he might've compromised a little in that aspect of their live performances. The energy is still there, but to me, the songs are so much more cohesive live now. Actually there's a lot of really good material from those first 2 albums you could do tutorials on. I'd love to see you do Strange World at some point and also dive into some of Davey's lead playing at some stage too from that song. One of my favorite early days songs. Keep on going man you're doing a great job! 👍

    Great lesson! Killers was my first Maiden album. I bought it back in '83. Like many other people, I picked it up because of the cover. Happily the songs were even greater than the artwork! I then went back and purchased Piece Of Mind and The Number Of The Beast. Even though their later albums are much more complex and feature more advanced 'musicianship,' Killers will always be my go-to record!

Getting back into it I jst want to jam in my man cave & see if I can blow the windows out while entertaining my homies. Thank you for being here for me. Thank you! I spent a whole lot of time trying to figure out the way they craft and arrange their songs, how sthey structure their guitar parts, how Dave, Jan and Adrian each approach the guitar, and of course learning the songs. I started with tab books too and of course back in the day if a good transcription book wasn't available for a given album (which was often the case) you had to learn by ear so I would spend hours with albums, and watching the live after death and Maiden England VHS tapes. So it's been a lifelong (and ongoing) study.
      I don't get it all right all the time but I try to be as accurate as possible considering I can't work on things forever or I'd never post anything. 😅

    Hi Nico! I ordinarily wouldn’t post something like this because it’s pretty deep in the weeds, so to speak, but I thought if anyone would appreciate this level of detail you would, so here goes…
    I was playing the opening riff, and I was finding it awkward at one spot - in the second half of measure 2 when you play the single notes on string 4 (D string), they should be played in position IV, right? I was having a little trouble at the repeat, then, when playing the D note on string 5 with my middle finger, having to switch quickly to my first finger at that fret to do the power chord D5 that starts the riff over again.
    I stumbled into playing that note with the open string 4 instead, which gave my hand time to switch to position V smoothly to restart the riff. Does that make sense? If so, what do you think of that approach?
    Thanks so much for your channel, Nico. Your thoughtful approach to all things Maiden with a level of detail seldom found anywhere else is really a gift. Keep these lessons and song analyses coming, and Up the Irons!

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  Рік тому
