In a rain-interrupted evening in Kolkata, the Kolkata Knight Riders' spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine delivered a masterclass, restricting the Mumbai Indians' chase and securing a playoffs berth for their team. With the likelihood of finishing in the top two also high, the duo's stellar performance was instrumental.
Following a target of 158 runs in 16 overs, Chakravarthy and Narine applied immense pressure, allowing Mumbai Indians to score only 22 runs in the five overs post-powerplay while claiming two crucial wickets. Suryakumar Yadav and Tim David attempted to accelerate against the pace bowlers but fell victim to Andre Russell's varied deliveries, further denting MI's chase as they stumbled to 92 for 5.
Despite a late flourish from Tilak Varma, reducing the equation to 22 runs needed from the final over, his dismissal early in the last over sealed MI's fate, marking their ninth loss in 13 matches.
After a delay of one hour and 45 minutes due to rain, the match was reduced to 16 overs per side. Despite losing their openers early, Kolkata Knight Riders, led by Venkatesh Iyer and aided by lower-order contributions, posted a total of 157, initially appearing modest but ultimately proving sufficient for victory.
