Thank you for doing this review. Recently bought the rane 70 and I was afraid maybe I should've gotten the rane 72. But looking at your review I feel I made the right decision. Thank you!
Thank you for the in depth review. I have always used and and owned Pioneer gear, that I rent out, for the more industry standard nature. I have been getting serious about scratching and turntablism and so I dug around and got a great deal on this mixer. It definitely seems like more of a customizable and niche interface than the more steadfast nature of the Pioneer DJM mixers I'm used to. I learned a lot from this review, and I thank you. I am happy with my purchase so far and this video makes me want to dig into the 72 mk2 and make it my own. I plan on getting a pair of the RANE 12 mk2's eventually but still building technique and muscle memory with classic turntables.
I love your honesty and how you compare the other mixers.I started DJing at age 14 back in ‘86 so used humble dj equipment in the beginning, Radio Shack mixers and turntables, and quickly graduated to my 4 chromed-out 1210s circa 1988 from Japan which I used up until May 2011 when they along with almost 3 decades-worth of vinyl were stolen from me….I went on a long vacation for 5 years and came back home in May 2016 and it took me a few years to start literally from scratch and relearn everything…. but in the digital dj format with my DENON PRIME 4 being the controller of my choice and with it learning about DENON ENGINE PRIME, SERATO DJ PRO, AND VIRTUAL DJ PRO which I’ve come to master all of them within 1-3 months time. Now, I’ve seen an opportunity to getting this mixers along with a pair of DENON LC6000 media players and was searching online for a decent review of these items. Unfortunately for me at this time in June 2022…. these are on backorder and I won’t be able to get them just yet….. but most definitely will. Again,I really enjoyed your honesty on this review and actually subscribed and you helped me to solidify my decision to owning one pretty soon. Thanx and GOD BLESS🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💯💯💯💯💯
Thanks for the great review. I purchased a used Rane Seventy but it had an issue with the headphone output. I was going to get a good deal on a Seventy-Two but I watched this video and I trust your judgment and stayed with the Seventy. I got a great deal on a new Seventy because of the issues I had with the used one I purchased. Thanks again for all the great videos. ✌🏼
I was going to do a deep dive comparison video between the 72 and the S11 but you said all the things I was thinking very succinctly with far less words than I would have 👏 👏 👏
If you tap the screen where your pad mode choice is it stays on until you tap it again or change your mode. So it is possible to leave that legend for pads on.
Hey CT, great in depth review as always. I can see why you took a while, it was very thorough. The 72 feels like a PC. Sure you can keep the stock settings and it is perfectly usable. And with software/firmware updates it brings about new functionality that improves it over time. Not only that, you can customise it to do what you want it to do and there's just a wealth of functionality that's available for DJs to express themselves. However, prior to the 72, I, like many DJs, came from the S9. And the S9 was so intuitive, everything made sense, it felt like a Mac. And like a Mac, it was so seamless and I didn't need to do button combos, or hold down knobs to adjust beats or parameters. Or activate Saved loops! (One of my biggest gripes with the 72!!) It took a while, and there was a bit of a huge learning curve that I was not anticipating. But after playing around with it for around 2/3 weeks, I was comfortable with it. Effects sounded the way I wanted them to sound. Pad Fx were an easy way to access backspin, vinyl brake and echo out, like the S9. However, I sorely miss Hot Cue Loop. Because of their loop implementation on the 72, I find it nearly impossible to loop from a hot cue, unless I A) hold the record, B) set the Twelve to cue mode, and then hit the loop at the same time, or C) have it set as one of my saved loops. I don't know why it's so difficult to implement this. I just want it to be added, and I know they can do it, because THEY ADDED SCRATCH BANKS (which is so fun!) But in all honesty, I think I would just like an S9 refresh. No need for the screen, I just want the same thing with independent pad modes and maybe better sounding preamps, because vinyl on the 72s are just so pleasant and warm to listen to.
HERES THE PROBLEM WITH THIS MIXER! I wish i was wrong but ----- first gig out with this thing. I kept the fx switches flipped up to the on position. Serato FX #1 on (same for both channels) FX1-clean echo out, 2-echo, 3 reverb. Clean echo orange button pressed, fx on. Tap screen to allow the knob to work the clean echo out effect. Without using effect, only switches on, there is a big delay in the headphones, so if you have your ear cueing and the monitor right next to you, you will hear the sound is coming out of the monitor BEFORE the headphone. So i tried wearing the headphones, put the cue select knob in the middle. i hear whats playing out live which is channel 1, i then cue channel 1 and there is a big delay between the 2 in my headphones. What a let down how did they miss this? also having the effects POST FADER makes u miss some of the audio that you want to effect when u put the switch up, or turn the knob for the activated effect. Now, in headphones, effects on but not active or being used, im listening to live channel in headphones which is channel 1, i cue channel 1 i hear the delay between the 2, then i press the orange button to de activate the serato effect and the delay goes away instantly. this issue is with the serato effects only. if the effect is activated and youre cueing the channel you might not notice the delay, you throw in the mix u think youre on, u bring the track in and you are way off, u speed it up to match the beat and you cant believe whats going on that you were so far away. They gotta fix this, i was flawless on my pioneer 900 nxs, this rane issue is a problem i wish i never bought it unfortunately i did. If youre in the market please do this test before purchasing.
i still have not worked out the effects section yet.As for the pads i mainly use those for cue points and maybe the sampler though as im mixing video i have a lot going on anyway. The faders are just fine.I have the rane 12s mk2s.This has been the system of my dreams.Probably more than i need but i am very happy
As an old head dj who uses modern equipment such as this one it bothers me to hear so much focus on effects and layout vs skills such as mixing and scratching. It doesn’t matter to me how many effects are built in. What does matter is sound quality and crossfader. As long as those are on point learning this mixer is like riding a bike. Still a great video as usual. Keep up the great work.
@@ClevelandTerry I’m gonna give it a try for a couple weeks and if I don’t like it I might exchange it for the DJM S7. I’m relying on wave forms for viewing and mixing tracks as I’ve gotten used the Prime 4 and not having to use a laptop and no headphones so we’ll see lol. But the Twelves are badass and the Rane just looks so damn sexy sitting in the middle.

solid Review Terry !, I have the normal 72 and there is barely any difference and I am one of those that like the heavier Mag 3 (once you adjust them to preference - and once you update the firmware) the Effects were indeed confusing for a minute. Still might be for some aspects. There are some killer configurations that you use with Midi that take this mixer to another level. The screen lag is complete nit pick and I have zero issues with it. I think it looks crispy and accurate. The intuitive thing may be apparant when using the 70.. I only own the 72 so I have adpated to it - I can see the nicer lines on the 70 but it is also a stripped down sparser mixer. The bottom line is you can ROCK ANY PARTY with both machines. And I have barely 'scratched' thes surface with my 72. It's quite astounding. I must also note I got my 72 at a blow out price a few months ago , almost $1000 cheaper than the MKII. Thanks so much for the review.
thanks, helped me make my mind up, just about to buy the rane or the pioneer and was finding ti hard making my mind up, after watching this and your review of the S11, it's S11 all the way for me.
Agreed. The 72 takes time to wrap your head around but once I got into it and dialed it in the way I like, I really enjoyed play on it. I think a hefty firmware update (1.7 perhaps?) can fix depth parameter issues. I've been using the S11 for a month and definitely find it more intuitive/user friendly on the surface but more complicated when using the screen. A function of the highly customizable mixer class I presume.
You can also “double click” on the effects on the “touch screen”. That’ll let you add more to the effects itself. Ex- the “echo” gives you an option of -High pass filter and low pass filter... the phaser or flanger gives you the option to add more “positive or more negative...

Hi. I'm having an issue with my pioneer ddj sx3. After I did an upgrade on my mac to sur one, my serato stopped working. I degraded to catalina and reinstalled serato. Now I can't see my virtual deck. Any suggestions?
Would you buy both, the Rane 72 MKII and Pioneer S11? Would it be too much or for one to be a back up mixer? Or would it be safer to go with S11 and Seventy as back up?
I don’t like the fact I can’t remap the flex FX on the Seventy. Can’t make use of Simple Echo and the Hold Echo in the same set I’m playing. And the fact that they share the same parameters doesn’t make any sense at all. The tap bpm is also very cumbersome when playing slower beats from vinyl. It takes twenty seconds of tapping for to settle to the correct bpm. Hope they at some point come with a firmware update. Ragardless of how many more taps you have to do on the Seventy Two, at least the FX can be configured to your own style of DJing...
