He's been playing music longer than SRV's whole career.....and if you look at john mayer blues jams where he isn't playing his own songs...yes he actually shreds like you wouldn't believe. it really is true.
I always go back to my strats. they just have an amazing tone when clean or slightly overdriven. the tone is like crack. I can not escape it. Black with mint guard is an awesome combo.
One of the most beautiful strats I've ever seen. Classy piano black + gold hardware + mint pickguard + pearloid tuners + big dipper pickups for mellow blues tone = DO WANT.
John Mayer is a great guitar player. It's not about how fast you can play, but about the color and feeling in your playing. John Mayer gets respect from the best guitar players in the world, I don't think that's a coincidence.
Don't you think this is purely a subjective argument? Page is my favorite gutiarist of all time, but I also know damn well that Vai and Satch are "better" players. Mayer's a damn fine guitarist, and he's also humble enough to admit he's still searching for his own voice on the instrument. And in my view, Mayer's a better songwriter than SRV ever was. But that's my subjective opinion. Maybe you feel differently.
Vai and Satriani , they are more prepared and studied they have a title and they are very great composers, it is not only the technique it is the creativity the feeling with which they play and the phrasing of the notes, just melodic and very good to play, Page is good but you can not compare them , Page is a legend but now they are too and far more than many will be and they are, if you only look at the technique and that kind of things you have to look more closely, musical reading and compossing is very important, if you go have a profession you have to do well prepare and study, since that will open the doors, you can not opniar of successful people graduated music conservatories, you can not give a bad opinion or make less to successful and studied people in music conservatories who know what they do if you are not even higher or at least at their level, it is very bad manners.
I agree with you. I've always understood why BB King was regarded as a pioneer, but I've never understood why people placed him in stratosphere ability and execution categories. If you watch the guy play, he's super solid, but he's also quite simple. That doesn't discredit his pioneering of blues sensibilities, but it does keep me from putting him in the same category as SRV, Halen, or even Mayer in terms of sheer prowess. To 1954 Tele: Like him or not, Mayer is objectively a great player.
@Danklin24 it does affect it, in the way that if the body resonates, it resonates the strings as well, creating much longer lasting notes etc. but it does not affect the tone much at all, you're right.
I got to say I'm surprised at some people knocking John Mayer... let's be honest ... the guy is a superb guitarist and has played already alongside the best blues guys jazz guys and rock guys.. and he is able to get their respect and isn't scared to play with them... and if you can do as well??? ...then why aren't YOU playing up there with the stars?? probably a record company or promoter would laugh at you.... Put up or shut up OK.
@AlexanderHasford yeah, i kindda knew that story, thing is, those strats are painted in thin nitro and the one we see on the vid is polyurethane, same thing they make the buttons from your shirt. so, is reaaaally harder to relic in any way (use or "lab relic" hahaha)
also these john mayer sigs have nice pickups that come only in his signature strats, another reason why you cant say they are the same as american standard strats.
@quilicimusic you're right. they're probably gonna jack the prices up since it's limited edition even though it's not custom shop or masterbuilt. so i will find something that's gonna fit my needs :) thanks!
My understanding from guitar forums was that Mexican strats did get respect for being affordable (well, back before Fender raised all their prices some years ago). I can tell you that my 1997 mexi made strat is fantastic. Of course you need to replace the steel saddles with graphite and the hardware does corrode after several years in a cold room, but I've replaced all the hardware on mine anyway. All the mexis you played were made in the last couple years? Maybe they are worse now?
@RKRClassic It's probably specked more or less just like his main guitar just without all the wear and tear. Maybe some different pickups, neck carve, etc. A small thing you can notice right away is that the string tree is set a little farther back on the headstock (not to say that makes a profound difference)
... for being affordable quality guitars I meant to say... sorry about the rage in my first reply to you! :) I think I was just surprised that someone thought that mexi strats are bad (since that's the first I've ever heard that).
Why does the guitar JM is holding at minute 1:33 has only 3 tremolo springs and the ones sold have 5? (I don't know much about guitar setup, but wanna learn...)
@GretschBeastFan you are spot on, he is a wanna be and I think you are being kind comparing him to most local blues players, at least in my area. This is music for young girls. I watched a few of these clips, this guy really takes himself seriously, like he is a real blues player. SRV wouldn't spit on him if he were on fire, to mention the two in the same sentence is guitar blasphemy
@AlexanderHasford Thats not it. John Mayer went to Fender b/c he wanted to see how they made guitars in the Custom shop and the let him make one. He painted the body ( badly) and then John Cruz relic'd and assembled the guitar. Lol if he hated Sunburst why the hell would he own a bunch of them?
just my 2 cents, i think the relic process or removing the paint does affect tone somewhat, because without paint the body can resonate hence affecting how the strings resonate. not better or worse, just depends on what you're looking for. I always thought john's tone comes more from his amps and pedals vs his guitar. never the less, that guitar is sexy as hell
It worked out okay for him cause he's amazingly talented. It still doesn't change my disagreement with his reference. If any sort of guitar could be related to a 'blank canvas', it would be a standard american strat. Not a signature version strat, thats more like a painting in the style of another artist.
And i did not disrespect people who like signature guitars. The point is his signature guitar is no more of a blank canvas then any other artists signature guitar (or the dozens of models they have available that aren't signature models). Ya i have interest in signature guitar models too, but why? Because I am a fan of the artist, at least i can admit it. Next time you click post make sure it pertains to something I actually said.
@GretschBeastFan I don't even like John Mayer but I think he can take himself seriously as a guitar player if he wants. In fact, if Justin Beiber wants to learn the pentatonic scale and take himself serious he can, if he can play with Clapton and B.B.King without them frowning on his fretboard. If he gets BB's respect than he also gets mine.
@tntornadojpm the strats now are very light nitrocellulose finish anyway so that again is a gimmick. sure alot of finish would make a diffrence, but the coats are so light now that you would not be able to tell the difference. i know this because ive built guitars and do it as a hobby. plus if that was the case, everyone would have scruffed off strats/teles etc. alot of people do but alot of people dont.
I was nodding away, right through reading your comment until I got to the last line. Regards Jimi, he was a one off and for me and many people, in a league of his own. John Mayer is excellent, has real colour and substance in his playing but equal to Jimi he is not.
They're decent lol. I just dont see Fender upgrading them. I've played a mexi from 93, didnt like the sound and feel of the neck, but an 04 was decent. I did see a really nice mexican telecaster recently and that sounds amazing lol. Might also have to do with the way they're made like body finish and stuff like that. it'd be cool if they actually made only a few models a year and stopped mass production, then they might be able to add these features!
Like him or hate him anyone who has ever picked up a guitar has to admit that he is a gifted player. Is he the best ever? No, not even close. but the guy has skill, nobody can deny that. His 'douchey' personality rubs people the wrong way.
