I seriously hope the current generation of young musicians somewhat appreciate what it means to have comparisons like this readily available. This HAS NEVER existed before. We had to go off of forum posts, word of mouth from other musicians, and the opinions of salespeople.
Definitive, free gear comparisons are such a new concept that I’m very interested to see what affect it has on future gear. Thanks Phil!
And before forums and way before that, in the 70s when noone that we knew had started trying aftermarket pups, we had to buy these pups and put them in. That was a drag. Back then I realized, we'll in the early 80s actually that an MXR 10 band on the floor could simulate different pups good enough.
ur right but you could have said this a decade ago.
I’m a gen z, does that count?
Good point Brandon, I can only imagine how bad my gear acquisition syndrome would've been if I only had pretty pictures and descriptions and no videos or comparisons
Right on brother..
Am I the only one who lost it when he casually swapped the pickups out of that guitar??? That's so sick!!!
I thought I was trippin balls
Single coil sized seems more muddy than full size, surprisingly !
I've found that the single coil sized tend to get lost in a typical band mix. This can be overcome by micing everything and having a good sound man to do the mix, but most bands don't have that.
It sounded bad to my ears. Muddy, muted, with awful treble. Honestly, bad.
Full humbucker always sounds better. But you can tweak it.
Frank Carr or have your drummer play softer
@@juliusmillermusic Or an Ekit!
After years in rehearsal rooms and gigs I’m lucky I can hear anything.
The fullsized HB sounds clearly more defined to my ears
The full sized ones sounded, well, fuller haha
I wonder what a double size humbucker would sound like...
@@niclastname obviously double fuller
yeah a bit more warmth and low end or low mids on the full size over the Jr's
yep
59 Humbucker seems to be wider than its LIL counterpart but the "Character" is very similar
yeah we can see that 😂
The 2 JB's sounded surprisingly similar to me in clean and crunch. The 59's however had a distinct difference to me regardless of clean or crunch.
Jb ceramic mgnet
59 alnico magnet
they sound more similar than I was expecting honestly. I wonder how their heavy chug sound differs.
After reading some more of these comments I can not believe how many people have sworn off "mini-humbuckers" because of this ONE comparison....AGAIN, I would love to see this done with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails. ....Just food for thought Phil.
I appreciate seeing guitar tone demonstrations straight through an amp. Too many channels have a dozen floor pedals in the chain and you can't tell what the guitar sounds like. Good job.
God I love being able to see and hear the differences between different pick ups. Phil thank you for taking the leap of faith with the new axe so you could do this. See you on Friday. Have a great week!!
also depends on the pots used. Pickup height also can cause tonal changes. I’m sure there are tweaks to get closer. All in all It’s the best SD can do for a drop in configuration without having to completely buy a new guitar or electronics.
This is the platonic ideal of a demo. A/B testing these configurations clarified so many tonal questions for me. Thanks Phil!
The ability to swap out those pickups like that is really cool!!! I could tell a noticeable difference in the full sized JB in both brightness and range. The bridge position with lots of distortion was almost the same, other than that they were definitely different. Thanks for making this! Cool comparison.
I was very surprised that the full size humbucker had MORE clarity and LESS muddy tone. I fully expected the single size to have a thinner clearer sound.
Nope. The tech used means that full size still sounds better overall - though if you want a fast superstrat, get either a MIM fender with a two post trem or (better) a G&L legacy, slap on locking tuners, and put a JB Jr in the bridge. Instant killer superstrat with modifications you can do at home.
@@Diax1324 or grab a Jetstream by Reverend, those can be awesome like that too, but they has 3p90
Full size definitely has a much broader frequency range, both top and bottom. Huge difference.
Without a doubt.
Great comparision,
the best I‘ve heard so far in the internet ! 👍
(no endless noodling, no different guitars (apples and oranges) like many other „comparisons“ out there.)
Shootout of silent singlecoils, I suggest Mojotone quiet coils vs fishman fpuence single width. Two different takes that people seem to like. EMG Mavericks are a good option too.
Very helpful comparison, which validates one astute pickup forumista's criticism of Seymour Duncan's Strat-size humbuckers: Their design drives down the resonant peak to sound fuller, but at the cost of sacrificing some highs. Especially with ceramic magnets, one shouldn't really expect these to sound much like the full-size HBs they name-check. Even with Alnico V magnets, my Red Devil neck pickup sounds dampened compared to a good full-size neck HB. That said, I have Red Devil bridge pup on 2 Strats, and those are a *perfect* bridge pup to my ear. Warm but balanced Neil Young tone, clean or overdriven.
Can you expand on this series and start getting other pickups involved for comparisons? I love this concept! Would love to hear more pickups, like dimarzios, etc
Love to see a twisted tele neck pickup versus a regular Strat neck pickup
Was planning to get the lil 59 neck for my chapman, thank God i found this video. Saves me alot of $$
I'm going with a Lil 59 as my bridge pickup in my Tele. Wanted something interesting and a little darker so this fits the bill perfectly. Also adding a little more heat to the neck pickup with another SD single coil so can't wait to hear the combo :).
EMG 81/85 vs Fishman moderns
I have a JB Jr in one of my strats, so it was interesting to hear the comparison to the full size one. I would have been interested to hear a comparison of the coil splits too, but I guess it wasn't possible with that set up.
I have these exact same pickups in my danelectro innuendo. The minis actually have a slightly darker, but still somehow more single coily to my earn. They do sound VERY close to the full size ones though (maybe a bit tighter with drive) They also sound great when split (FYI)
I had a Lil' 59 in the bridge of a Strat I owned and I liked the extra punch it gave me over the single coil
The full size H/B's has more clarity/fuller sound in the clean setting during this demo but the single coil sized held there own for what they are . As always once you start turning knobs on amps and pedal board. ....
the makers of this guitar probably had a big smile while watching this video
Thanks, I need a single coil size neck pickup and wanted to get the little 59. Now I will just place a regular single coil pickup in the guitar.
They sounded closer than I thought they would. I think the differences come down to brightness (full sized is brighter - Alnico 5 vs ceramic) and output (full sized has more output - can't have as many winds on the smaller pups). Great comparison!
The pickups are noticeably muddier, but nothing a little amp tweaking won’t fix (that’s why we have all those fancy knobs) 😊
they are muddy because of ceramic magnet, and they are overwound
Always great and important to hear from the gear maestro himself! Great work as always!
What a great review. And what a platform for comparison.
I agree with the post below that videos like this are invauable and when I started out(1969) not only wasn't the information out there but there were NO replacement parts to speak of. You played what you had and hoped it was something good. The way my ears hear this, the full sized pickups just plain sound better. They have a wider frequency spectrum and richer tone...even on chessy computer speakers. I was amazed it was so different and seeing this convinced me to not go with the minis. Great demo as usual. Very informative. this is the kind of thing we need. Not too much talk and an apples to apples comparison. Kudos Phillip!
Wow! Simply amazed! It's a real pleasure to watch you, sir, my respect and thanks for this increadibly useful video. I was thinking of swapping the bridge single of my strat for a single-sized humbucker, but now I know better - thank you!
Video suggest! Putting single coil neck pickup in bridge position / middle pickup in neck position etc. Let’s see what it’s like to swap around single coil pickups from the position they are intended for. Thanks Philip
I have a G&L Legacy Special (strat) with the small blade humbuckers that definitely sound like they fall somewhere in between normal humbuckers and single coil. The comparison in this video showed something completely different. Very interesting to hear these side by side but I would suggest that maybe there's a wide spectrum when it comes to the single coil sized humbuckers.
The mini-buckers always clean up better. They're a fantastic invention. Still have my George Lynch lil' screamin' demon from over 20 years ago in my '68 reissue strat. Nothing like it.
Seymour Duncan pickups have always been my favourite
I have you on JBL 8 inch monitors, and Steinberg interface, and you can 100% tell the difference. The full size are rich, have great clarity, and the strings just ring out individually.
You nailed a great descriptor Phillip. On iPad Pro Speakers the Jr all sounds like a pillow on it. Every one did.
I just ordered the SD Everything Axe set for fun modifying my Squier. I looked at the mini HB specs and while the minis have 59 and JB in the name, their specs are different in both cases. The mini 59 has a higher DC resistance than the fullsize, so hotter in theory, and the mini JB has a little lower resistance than the fullsize. In both cases, the minis use ceramic magnets instead of the Alnico V’s in the fullsize. So, I guess SD did the best they could to approximate similar sound with very different pickup design.
Great video as always. I was hoping to hear them compared when split though :-(
I tried a little 59 in my Strat a number of years back and I was never crazy about it. After listening to this though, I"m never going to give one of these mini HB's a shot again. The full size pickups sound way better, just no contest.
I put the lil 59 in the neck position on my strat as i had one laying around. I actually liked the single coil more. It’s either full size humbucker or singlecoil.
Thanks Phil. Seeing you just grab the pickups and switch so easily was eye opening. I prefer the full sized humbucker sounds. More fuller and rich with clarity by about 15% to 20% . The old reliable JB sounded great.
Hi Phil,
An interesting comparison. I have the Everything Axe set witch is the JB Jr, Lil 59, and a Duckbucker in the middle. This was designed as a "drop in " set for a Stratocaster. As in just install the new pickups and don't change anything else. They are therefore voiced for 250 k pots and a .047 uF cap. The Seymour Duncan wiring diagram for the Every Axe set clearly shows this. Did you take this into consideration for your demo? I've learned a lot watching your videos. Keep up the good work.
-Dave
The guitar has 250k pots in it by default. He mentioned this when he unveiled the Sonnium Guitar in the video. You can override that when installing Active pickups then they go down to 25k.
@@clamus68 Thanks Carlos. I'm fairly new to setting up guitars and will ask newbie questions sometimes.
@@DavidKing-gl9tz it was a great question. Only reason I recall that moment was me thinking to myself, "how good are Humbuckers going to sound with 250k pots?" Evidently fairly good.
@@clamus68 I have a Dimarzio Super Distortion & Dimarzio PAF in my strat. Sounds great (250k pots) , never bothered to change.
@@clamus68 Rule of thumb with himbuckers and 250k pots is that you may lose some brightness and get a slightly darker tone. Depends on your preferences, although you can as always use EQ or a tone pot to roll off some brightness, but can't really add it back easily.
wow, thats why i love the jb fullsized.best humbucker in existence imo,ive got both
Really grateful for doing that!!
if I collected pickups I’d want a system like you have
The humbucker which are small as single-coils are my most favorite.
I just got a hold of a JB and put into a Harley Benton SC-550. I must say, wow, what a difference and wow, I can see why the JB is very popular. I'm hooked on it, what a full articulate sound. Definitely hot, but not over done. Considering getting the hot rod set for another guitar. Oh yeah, full sized, for sure sound better to me. But still great for a single coil.
Yeah but the advantage to the mini humbuckers is that if you're putting them in your Strat or Tele, that you don't have to hack away at your guitar's body & rout out the pickup cavities for humbuckers.
I use a mini humbucker in the bridge position of my tele and it sounds awesome!
Thanks Phil. Good to know you can't really go wrong with any of these pickups.
Man this was a awesome comparison. I love all the pickups. I’m a Seymour Duncan fan. Thanks
I like darker. The 59jr is awesome. I hear the pair really well with duckbuckers in the middle position.
That guitar is amazing for these tests! Amazing idea!
The full size HB with 500k pots sound a lot more open.
I was surprised the Lil 59 was a bit darker. I'd probably still use it for my neck pickup though. Great Vid Phil!!
I have a JB Jr. in the bridge position on my Strat. It sounds awesome with high gain. Very tight and focused. I rarely ever use it clean. When split with the middle PUP it is very anemic so I’m going to undo that split mod. However, I have heard a Lil 59 in the neck in parallel mode and it actually sounds good. Like a noise-canceling SC. SC-sized HB are not full HB, and I would not use them split, but they do have their uses in parallel and series.
Seemed to me that the biggest difference was at the neck position. The bridge pups sounded more similar because the string movement is less prominent near the bridge. Cool ass demo with a really useful guitar and a knowledgeable fellow. Good stuff!
that pinkish guitar in the background is so cool!!!
I noticed that the double humbucker on the clean Channel at the end of a strum kind of had this vibrato of its own pretty cool effect
Awesome video Phil, I reckon I've come back and watched this 3 times now as it's such a great reference.
Love your work mate, and G'day from Australia
Wow. Less difference in the JB. And, as you said, distortion blurs them even more. If you go with the mini 59 you probably should add a treble boost I guess. Would love to see a comparison of US pickups and foreign counterparts. IE - Texas Special and Tex Mex
Thank you for a very helpful video. This video has convinced me to spend the extra cash and route out the bridge cavity on my Strat and get the real thing. Great demo playing, too. Nice, short passages instead of endless noodling.
I think it's cool you're using a Somnium guitar, they're made in my hometown Brooksville, FL about 10 minutes from me. Last I looked they only offered EMG pickups, I guess they're offering more options or you can buy the pickup frames separately now.
I watch your channel all the time, but stopped by for the SD Little 59, I'm thinking of putting one in my US Silver Sky bridge position. They sound great in the neck. Never liked the JB, had it in a 1970's lawsuit Les Paul Custom as a kid, and it was always too hot for my taste, I like vintage sounding PAF style humbuckers.
Thanks for the super-informative approach you're taking. I can imagine some future point where you can combine all of the head-to-head comparisons into a mad crazy everything vs everything documentary. Or something like a website where a user could pick two pickups and hear samples of each in turn.
I'm sure you've already got these types in mind, but I'm eagerly waiting for things like Alumitone vs a regular single coil, or vintage DeArmonds vs vintage P90s and vintage 'trons. I'm patient, though :)
This is something that I've been really curious about. Now, I'm glad to have witnessed this.
Wow. Thought the little 59 would be clearer and more open sounding. The results of the bridge ones seemed to match expectations a bit closer. Thanks for this!
This guitar setup is awesome. The comparison is hands down one of the best I’ve seen and heard
I personally could not believe how awesome the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails sound in my project Squier, fixer upper that I had since a teenager. It had sentimental value and I am never going to trade it or get rid of it so i decided to give it some love after all these years. New bridge saddles, and nut Graphtec. New pickguard and then "why not" some new pickups. I did not expect much of a change I never have tried changing pickups before....HOLY CRAP....
What came back, I did not expect.
It went from a nice polite Strat-like guitar to a FIRE BREATHING METAL MACHINE. No joke. I had to put a milder "Duckbucker" in the middle just so i would have some clean option's...Nothing "muddy" or "lacking" anywhere. Maybe with the Lil 59 and Lil JB there is a difference?.....NOT with the bladed Hot Rails. Those things absolutely BURN and would stack them up against ANY full sized Humbucker, (I also have Les Paul's and Schecters, Ibanez. ect.) .....That is my 2 cents, thanks for listening.
Phil! Awesome concept dude. I’d love to see you comparing some of the different DiMarzio mini humbucker s style pickups against each other. Cheers
It’s like the universe blessed me cause I was looking up info on mini humbuckers last night and now I see you posted this today.
Good comparison, Phil. The full-sized versions definitely sounded better to my ears. I'm biased because I don't know why anyone would go and put a humbucker in a perfectly good single coil space.
Full sized pickup sounds, well, fuller.
Good comparison I have one of each in different guitars. I do how ever think the test should have been in the bridge position because that's where most of us install them full size with a jazz in the neck and mini with a Lil 59in the neck and a Duckbucker in the middle.
Thank you for that video ! I was contemplating installing a little 59 in my Strat but it sounds too muffled / muddy and lacks the definition of the full-size humbucker. I didn’t expect that much difference!
Phil, with that guitar you have the ability to do the type of pickup comparisons that pretty much nobody is well positioned to do right now. The guitar, strings etc are all held constant and you can really AB pickups in an informative and practical way. I’m looking forward to more of these, hopefully!
Great to hear this comparison! Thanks!
Wow, the difference is very noticeable, I had an HSS strat with two mini humbuckers on the single positions, really never made contact with that guitar...but I do remember the sound on them was muddy and compressed just like the ones you compared with the full humbuckers. Btw thanks for helping us staying at home in the days of pandemia.
Excellent. Thank you for playing just enough to do a proper comparison.
This is a terrific little resource for quick comparisons. Interesting results and a nice choice of parts and different pedal and amp tones to highlight the differences between the pickups depending on neck and bridge positions. A suggestion if you haven’t tackled it already: different tremolos and how they affect the tone and dynamic response. Keep these coming!
Interested to hear how a Hot Rails would have stacked up. I find them to be slightly more bright than the JB Jr.
It’s very subjective like to my ears the full size sounded a little bit clearer VS the mini humbuckers, but when you add overdrive and distortion they seem to be very close sounding. To my taste I would preffer the mini humbucker cause to me they sounded warmer but like I said it’s very subjective.
I was surprised how similar they sounded. The only clear difference I could hear was in volume. Very interesting!
you need to develop your ear or get headphones or speakers that cost more than $1.
the difference is very easily heard if you listen instead of looking. im 55 and have been in 5 bands and still hear quite well.why is your hearing so bad?
PS yeah you know I couldn't figure out which pickup you with the wind first because I can't see what the pickups are or if there's any ABC text and there I don't get it but on this list sample you did that on the notes I could hear clear distinction between the two pickups and the second one was Fuller and brighter and you had mentioned that that's the full humbucker so now I know which one comes first thanks Phil LOL sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom
I just watched this 3 times in a row. Excellent comparison vid - thanks Phil! I put a lil ‘59 in the bridge and now I know what I am missing. I can live with that though as it isn’t much. If I had have put it in the neck though I would now be disgusted. The difference there is far more pronounced. Next step is put in 500k pots and see what happens...
Outstanding pickup comparison video! You can really hear the difference! Well done!
Thanks for this video! I have JB’s (HB) in 2 of my guitars and a ‘59 in another. Was curious to how the mini’s compared. Was thinking of modding my daughter’s strat. There’s a definite difference in the mini’s, but better than expected
L500XL pickup Bill Lawrence VS Bill and Becky. Also Seymour Duncan’s Dimebucker sound comparisons. Thanks Phil
Great comparison. Been looking for one for a while. Want to use a strat on stage, but need at least P90 ooompf and want to keep the 3 single optics. Juniors might fit the bill perfectly.
Love this series, and your test bed guitar. Really looking forward to seeing all the pickup tests this year. I heard a lot less difference in the JBs, but was surprised at the difference in the '59s.
I actually have a covered '59 that to my ears sounds closer to the mini than the full you used in this comparison. Would be kind of interesting to compare 4 of the same pickup, and see what kind of consistency there is from unit to unit.
Great comparison, Phil. If possible, please do a comparison between P-rails Vs an actual everything else (p90, single coil rail & humbucker). I'm sorry, I know it's a huge ask but I feel it's something worth knowing / understanding better.
Tanx Phil.. 🤘🏽
It is awesome when I'm looking for some info and Google lands me right on one of your videos.
Love the sound of the full-size set but yeah, disappointed in the minis.
Based on this, I’d love to play a guitar with the JB Jr. in the Bridge and a full sized 59 in the neck. The JB jr. sounded ever so slightly tighter with overdrive so it would probably come in handy for palm muting clarity.
With a little dirt they both sound pretty good. Clean, the full size rules.
The application of the "lil" pickups are going to be something totally different. The video shows that that are fairly close in sound, especially with some distortion. The "lil" pickups are going to be for people who want to add the humbucker sound to their tele or start style guitars, but don't want to change pickguards or reroute their cavities. Great video showing that two pickups though. Thanks. And good luck with the Great Guitar Buildoff!
To my ears, on Clean tones, the full size pickups were louder and warmer sounding. On distorted tones the full sized pickups were brighter and clearer. Great guitar for this kind of demo. Thanks
