    After all these years I hear a 6L6 & right away, "YEP! That's the one!"

      greatvanzinni I don't know why so many just hate 6L6s... there's so many amps that I love that use 6L6s... so if it sounds good, it is good!

      Unless these amps are cranked to 8 or above you're not hearing what the power tubes REALLY sound like

    • @Spidouz
      @Spidouz 6 років тому

      cast390 that's actually not true. Each amps could be set differently to start breaking up at different level. You could find an amp that would already start breaking up on 2. That's really up to the amp designer.

      This argument will never die lol. It's an age old debate on the internet. My take is that power tubes of a similar type IE 6l6/el34/kt88 have some very tiny sonic differences, but less so than the sonic difference you might hear between say NOS mallard 6l6's and brand new JJ 6l6's. It's almost entirely the preamp that gives the amp it's tonal character. I've swapped out 6l6's for el34's on my Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier, and there is absolutely no sonic difference between the two on the same amp Same with a couple marshalls and fenders, I wanted there to be sonic differences, but there just wasn't ever anything that was worthy of note.

      You are far more versed in this than I am that's for sure. I think back in the day (60's) everything was 6L6 so I have that as my baseline so to speak. We had Gibson & Epi which we understood to be the same amps just different coverings, Gray vs. Brown & we had Fender. Everything else were store brands to us & cheap, Silvertone, Supro, etc. I wish I had even some of the cheap ones stashed away in a closet these days.

    HBDTTK! KT-88 gets my vote though I liked the 6L6, too.

  • @colinmcdonald7591

    Well yeah, the series1 preamp has a tonne more gain and the kt88's are super clean tubes. 99 per cent of the differences across these 3 amps is in the character of the preamp, not the different in power tube. Marketting mumbo jumbo to think otherwise.

    • @bobboitt3126
      @bobboitt3126 6 років тому +1

      Exactly. I had a single ended amp that you could swap power tubes. There was very little difference between 6l6, el34 and kt88 in that amp. It was so small that by using the tone controls you could make any tube sound like the other. So its really the pre-amp design specific for each tube that makes the difference.

    • @colinmcdonald7591
      @colinmcdonald7591 6 років тому

      Nothing at all wrong with preamps being tuned for specific power tubes and amps being sold for their unique tonal signature. But to think that these 3 different powertubes account for the drastic tonal differents across these 3 amps, would be very incorrect. I've got Mesa's and Marshalls that I can swap 6l6's and el34's in and out of the same amp, and really, other than very slight changes in feel and how the amps react at high volume, there isn't a whole lot of difference tonally. When you hear an amp with el34's it's typically got a Marshall style tone stack. An amp with 6l6's is typically going to have a more fender style tone stack meaning they're not going to sound anything alike regardless of what kind of power tube they are running. I was commenting more on this video and the way it was presented to imply that the power tubes were making all the difference on the 3 amps...as in, oo, yeah, I like the KT88's because there's way more gain and it sounds like metal...no, that amp happens to have kt88's because it needs the headroom, but the preamp is creating all that distortion not the power tubes...put a 6l6 in that series 1 and it'll sound basically the same, same with an EL34. The amps are simply all voiced differently, and their preamp voicing and speaker choice work well with each power tubes sonic characteristics.

    KT88 or 6L6 the clean was sweet on the 6L6.

    I liked the sound of all of them. I'm not so sure it's really the tubes that make the big difference though. I think that it must be each amps got a slightly different pre-amp in them. Which again is why I liked the sound of all of them. BTW that guitar sure did sound nice too.
