I always felt that this scene was so intense. In an otherwise zany and campy adventure film, this scene really kept the audience on their toes.

In this scene, they stayed true in intensity to the 1937 production of The Prisoner of Zenda.

Tony Curtis & Ross Martin were brilliant in this prisoner of Zender take off. And the bit when Martin dives out the window and smashes into the boat was priceless. 🤣🤣👍

Props for the actors using Italian grips on the foils...and holding them PROPERLY (of course, Italian and French grips WERE the grip of choice back when this was filmed).

Good observation. When I was in college in the early '80s I appreciated having at least one Italian foil available, being left-handed (I could make a French grip work, more or less, but pistol-grip was right out, so no epee for me back then).

I do love the respect shown by the villains in the older movies. The fact that men could still fight like men and stop for a moment to exchange weapons. It was very well done

This is the best sword fight in the history of movies it's better than any other duel.

Scaramouche is No. 1 hands down.
This is definitely up there, 2nd perhaps. But nothing tops the 1952 climactic duel.

I love the way 'The Great Race' constantly swaps genres, one minute it's a western, then it's a survival movie, then it's a Jules Verne style steampunk adventure, then it's a Ruritanian romance.
And it still manages to be funny throughout.

It's my number one personal favorite comedy. I'll never understand how it flopped at the box office at the time of its release or why it's not on the AFI's top 100 comedies list.

This is the payoff to the early setup where Leslie is dueling with Natalie Wood in his luxury beach tent and she tells him she won the international women's fencing competition and after he defeats her he says "now if you had won the international men's fencing competition" that was a brilliant seed that was planted now here is what Leslie meant we see how good he really is.

It coulda been. Professor Fate pointed out that it was a 100-foot drop, and it takes a free-falling body two-and-a-half seconds to fall through a distance of 100 feet. The baron’s vertical velocity while standing at the open window was, of course, zero b/c he hadn’t yet performed his swan dive. After 2.5 seconds, he hit the boat at a speed of 80 feet per second which is approximately 54.55 MPH.
Also: That boat was more like a wooden dingy. The body of a full-grown man hitting the boat head first at a speed close to 55 MPH could conceivably break it.
      -
IMHO, the REAL question is THIS: How could the baron survive an impact like that? Even if he were strong enough to survive the fall, crashing headlong through a solid, wooden boat at the end of a 100-foot swan dive? Imagine the damage to his head and neck! The soldiers who were in that boat swam away once it sank, but this movie doesn’t show what became of the baron. Maybe he survived as a quadriplegic?
