A wonderful well thought out video Stuart, you nailed my life to a tee. Had a 1960 bonneville in my late teens sold it year before l married and wanted another through 47 years of marriage, but my wife would look at me like l had two heads when l mentioned getting one, unfortunately my dear wife passed away two years ago. I now have a t100 and just purchased a 2016 street twin, both are wonderful machines. Drove 4 hours to where the street twin was and went through almost every thing u went through in your video. It was actually a wonderful experience. Rented me a uhaul , tied it down, brought it home.
I think if biking gets in your blood at a young age Terry its there for good, there no point trying to fight it! ive been lucky in that ive had bikes all my adult life and cant imagine being without one! I bought my '07 T100 (identical to yours) Bonnie back when I was 46 and did pretty much as you described, now it sits way too much, but I have plans to get her out and about now that the weather has improved. In my defense, I suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury 3 years ago (not on the bike, thankfully) and have not been as keen to ride while recovering and subsequently. But it's back in the saddle for me now. Cheers and thanks for all your great videos!
Lots of us have bikes that 'sit way too much' my friend, I think I for one will 'let you off' on this occasion. Just because you are unable to ride, does not make you any less a biker. My guess is, as long as you 'ease yourself back into it slowly' you will find riding is an excellent pick me up! Ride safe and good luck my friend, and welcome back!
I know how you feel. I developed menieres disease about 4 years ago, which left me with frequent spontaneous vertigo attacks, which meant biking, even driving was out of the question . But drugs and injections have got it under control, although I'm deaf with constant tinnitus. So hopefully back out on my 2011, Thruxton this summer. Goid luck with your recovery.
Mid life crisis? Not unless I live to be 134 years old. Recently bought a 2018 T120 with 2,300 miles (about 6 weeks ago). Hasn't gotten above 45 degrees (Fahrenheit) where I live so I've only been able to put about 200 miles on it, but I LOVE it! Smooth controls, excellent power and the heated grips are awesome. And the looks speak for themselves. I usually ride Norton Commandos (72, 73 and 74) and BSAs (67 and 72) so I'm used to a lighter bike by about 80 or 90 lbs. That said, any concerns I had about the weight were dissipated in the first 10 miles. The balance and low center of gravity make it stable and easy to initiate turns - you just have to be cognizant of the additional weight wen you maneuver it around the garage or come to a stop and lean to one side. I can't wait to put a lot more miles on when the weather cooperates.
Yes, hitting 50 years of age I remembered the riding I'd done in my 20s and decided to rekindle that flame. This was 14 years ago. I agree; this is a good bike for returning riders. Solid advice here which I am sure will be a big help to many.
Good factual video which should help novice buyers as well as some seasoned riders, it's always good to get a reminder. When it comes to bank transfers if the buyer or seller is reluctant or unsure I have in the past done a £10 payment to get the transfer set up and provide confidence, then when this happens the rest of the money can be transferred with full confidence. Wonderful advice at 10:35-40. I couldn't sell my T-140s due to that very reason. One was my late father's (1973) and the other (1977) we bought together in 1986.
I am doing it properly .... been working myself to the bone to set aside the cash for a motorbike again, while still doing renovations for the wife :) ... but I am going "Full Mid Life Born Again Biker" by being very cliche and getting a Harley that I have always wanted ... and I am nearly ready to make the purchase!
Stuart, You mentioned in the video it doesn't have to be this particular bike. Correct. When I retired, I visited a motorcycle shop, was looking for a 'bigger' bike. But as I was walking through all the new (2012) race bikes to get to the back of the bike shop where the big bike was, I couldn't help but stop and pause for a moment amidst all those racing bikes. They reminded me of my youth, where the KZ900, or the KZ1000 ruled the roads in the '70s. There were none of those, at least not in the physical form of the old KZ 1000's. However, I had to sit on one of those new bikes. Well, I never made it back to the big bike. Lol. I figured with a helmet on, no one would know that I was an old man on a youthful 2012 KZ1000 Ninja. Lol. She represents my retirement, no 'crisis', so I still have her to this day. For my soon to be 60th birthday, I'm going to go for a different bike, a Triumph. I'm thinking of the Rocket or Bonneville 1200 (Marlon Brando, Steve McQueen!). Having a hard time making up my mind which one, so I'm thinking of getting both (I'm fortunate in my older age, but as you said, I'm one of those who worked my ass off all my life). Anyhow, this Triumph search brought me to you, thank you so much for your incredible research! I'm going to try that tab ($) that supports your channel! I'm already subbed, so that tab is the least I could do for all of your help! You're videos, my good Sir, are definitely worth some payback!
just picked up a T120 black 2 years old 319 miles on the clock that's right 319 miles and a very good price in mint condition. Great videos Stuart keep it up
When I bought my little Suzuki it was missing a bolt that holds up the gear shifter and left foot peg, and I'm pretty sure it needs a new battery, but I got it for such a great price I don't really mind. It runs well and it's great for learning how ride. I had my first "big ride" along the country roads near my house today and it was fantastic! Well worth the extra price of a few new little parts.
As always, this is a very useful video! I am planning on getting my motorcycle license very soon and with it, obviously, my first bike. You answered all the questions I had in mind. Thanks a lot for the work you put in your videos.
Great video and advice. Having bought numerous lightly used mc's from private parties, your guidance is thorough and sage, Stuart. My challenge when I meet a clean bike I'm interested in is, staying objective. I tend to swoon and let objectivity fly out the window! Fortunately, I've been lucky. With the exception of a Triumph Sprint that burned oil, I've not been left stranded and been able to enjoy these bikes - until the next one came along. I test rode the Sprint but ignored the black around the edge of the tailpipe. Most purchases were sold for a simple reason: they weren't comfortable for more than an hour - some after 10 minutes. The bike may be reliable and well taken care of. Unless you plan to only do local rides, pay attention to how your knees and wrists like the riding position.

Good advice Stuart, I recently looked at a 2005 T100 with 1500 miles on the clock and it was immaculate . Unfortunately when I looked in the tank it was full of rust du to being stood for 9 years ! Some times low milage bargains aren't bargains at all !! Thanks to you I didn't buy it.
Halcyon Goggles? I have just bought mine and they are on the way! I am 40 and I am in a different position. I am looking for a bike that does not make me feel too you or too old. I had a Ducati Monster when I was in my 20s, at 28 I moved to London so I parked my bike. I went back home at 38 with a wife and a daughter, I restored my Ducati... unfortunately my back was 10 years older and it did not like it so I started to look at other types of bike. my first choice was the new Moto Guzzi V7 but when I tried the Triumph Scrambler (2010) I felt in love with it and I bought it. Unfortunately I don't like few things: - EFI is beautiful but carbs are carbs. With carbs you feel the bike. - It's too high for me, I am 168cm (5.6?). I am not tip toeing but I feel clumsy. - It's too heavy. Other than that, the bike is amazing. I am now undecided between a 2001 Triumph Bonneville and a 1975 Moto Guzzi T3.

Great video Stu, but if you're looking at an old triumph and the owner wheels it out of the shed and you check for oil leaks and there is none, it's a red flag, walk away, or at least put oil in it before you ride home, lol.
Good advice throughout. It’s great having a choice, car or bike. I used to only have a bike because I couldn’t afford a car. Now the bike can stay at home when it’s raining, where’s the mid life in that lol. Love the videos keep em coming.

Worth checking if starter boss mod has been done on earlier models "Search "Triumph starter boss failure" if this happens it can write off the bike ,as the crankcases plus clutch cover need replacing . Its worth having TTP SafeStart mod done , to reinforce starter boss , just for peace of mind , because if starter boss fails its often RIP Bonneville Great video though
An excellent presentation. A cuplu things: Whilst working as a backyard mechanic the boss told me that if you ask about price, and the owner uses the work "well" as in "Well I was hoping to get X dollars" that means they are open to negotiation. Test drive: take your hands off the handle bars briefly, and see if the bike still runs straight. If it doesn't it can mean the frame has been twisted from a accident. Happy hunting. Ronn

I have returned to my youth in a way and am the proud owner of a new 2015 gorgeous blue and white Bonneville. I love it. I would like to thank you for your excellent articles and reviews. Quick story - home from work early last night, wife says why don't you have an hour in the gym before tea, jump on the T120 and park up outside the gym, about to go in when a guy run's up. "I live in central London and have just got job on the outskirts. Always used to have a bike and looking to take it up again to commute. Love your T120...can you tell me more about it?" 30 mins later we're still talking Bonneville's and eventually I jot down your channel and tell him to check it out. I only got 30 mins in the gym but met a great guy and spread the T120 & Fillingham love. Thankyou sir!!
It's been 25 years since my last bike and now the kids are grown and the wife is gone. Time to get a new bike and ride. These Triumphs are really starting to grow on me.
Another excellent video. I’ve been fortunate enough to have owned two ac T100. And I’m sorry I ever parted with them but alas they were just two of too many. Quickly from a sellers point. I had a guy come to look at my T100 that was for sale and he talked and appeared to be very legitimate in his interest in this bike. Now my bike was showroom clean with less than 5000 Kms. 3000 miles. He came and inspected it asked all the good questions then asked to take it for a test ride. I asked him for his valid drivers permit ( I usually don’t like to let my bikes out of my sight however if I get the feeling the chap is real then I’ll take the chance with security his licence) ok he takes off. 45 mins later he returns with a big smile on his face and gets off the bike. I’m a bit furious but ask ok then what do you think. He says thanks but I’ll pass. I ask politely for his reason. He says (and are you ready for this) he only wanted to see how these retro triumphs road and couldn’t get a test ride at a dealer. Got in his car a drove away. So he fooled me with his so called interest in this bike. He just wanted a free joy ride. I traded it in at the dealer the next week for my Kawasaki Concourse.
Great vid. thanks. I first started watching your vids when I was looking at buying a RE 650 love all your vids. So the Wife and I usually have a cruiser that we ride together and I always have my own bike that I like to ride on my own in our current situation I ride a RE GT650 and I love that little bike I really connect with it and we ride a Kawasaki Vulcan Drifter 800, great bike, however we/I decided that we needed another bike the drifter is really nice be we have been riding it for 8 years and with out going in to detail, Gwen, suggested, when we were at a Ducati, Triumph dealer, she said " well I quite enjoy riding on the RE GT650, I love this Bonneville T100, would you want to replace the Drift with a Bonneville" Well Crapperone, no wonder I married her lol my eyes just about popped out of my head and I said, "Ya" with a huge grin on my face lololol. So that is the Story and while doing some research on the Bonnevilles I came across this vid, again thank you for the vid and tips on buying used, great advice. I know you do 2 vids a week and I can only imagine how busy you are but I would like to ask you a question, you may not be able to answer as there are lots of trolls on here that may want to chellenge you but I'll ask, you can answer if you want and or if you have time and if not I'll understand. Question is as follows also if there are people that read this that are well versed in Triumph paralelle Twins please feel free to offer your thoughts, ok question. In your opinion/ your thoughts, assuming a Bonneville 865 is well taken care of, at how many km/miles would you not buy a used one. Thank you so much Cheers Karl Squire.

Sage advise Stuart. I wouldn't trust the dealers either. I freely admit that I'm no good at buying 2nd hand & I have been stung in factory dealerships (cars Holden / G.M. & B.MW.)a couple of times. I like your torch idea it makes you stop and look
Good ideas, well done film sir! :-) One more thing to look at is the rubberthingies in the rear hub. With your rubber glove on, grab the sprocket and push it back and forth in the chain direction. It should be a little movement, cause that's what it's there for. But not to much! That could make vibrations similar to a bad chain and infect gearchange. ;-) These rubbers can be a bit pricey. I think most manufacturers use them. So it's a good idea in general. :-)
Hi John yes i did consider mentioning the cush drive, but as its not generally a safety issue, doesn't stop the bike running and most people dont even know the cush drive exists i thought it might complicate things , was also conscious of the videos running time. BUT your right that is a very valid point!

Great video. Nice reminder of what to look for. On my way out right now to look at an 09 Bonneville SE. I need a lower bike because my hips won't let me easily get on and off my VStrom anymore and my "ADV" days are over unfortunately. I will say though that video is much easier to watch at 1.25x speed... guess this California guy is used to faster talking... lol. But seriously, I really enjoyed this video!

I rode a bike when i was quite young (earnd it throwing pappers) . Now im sixty and ive have the bug .It comes and goes. I really need/want a bike. They save gas. They can be riden safley. Routs taken Precatinary measures etc. I would sure beat a bicycle. Plus i kind of want my small mid size four speed eight cyl car again. After about 40 years my old one had been knocked out of the picture by a teeny bopper.
I'm a biker . Started riding at ten on a Triumph Cub. Buying a used bike. Simple. Look for one all original, and hasn't got a lot of scrapes from going down. Then If it's What you want get it

You appear to have 2 different Triumph bikes in this video. A T100 with the British decals Black and White and a Black T120 with the saddle bags. I noticed that when you parked at the fence in the beginning of the video.
And here I thought I was special. I ticked all the boxes: - Rode when I was younger and gave it up due to having a serious accident. - Returned to riding at 50 - Wife's first words "well you better get disability insurance!". "Love you too" I thought but let's face it guys, we're women's plow horses. - Searched endlessly for a T-100 that would finally help me turn me into Steve McQueen or Mickey Rourke in Rumble Fish that wouldn't cost the kid's college fund. - Found one, a 2018 T-100 black with 800 miles. Turns out the seller had a demanding wife too but hey, his loss, my gain. Carpe Diem and all that.
Very good video, lots of good information, but I won't take the risk on my first bike, I bought brand new, I purchased a brand new bike in November with big discount, plus 5 Year free Warranty for a price of two years used one with low KM, the catch is that I have to go 600km to pick it up and drive it back :)

I really do not think I would let a few strangers ride my bike. Far too many unknowns. Besides, I do not anticipate selling my bike. Invested too much into it! Great video, Sir. As for service history, surely someone who has cared for the bike has done the repairs and maintenance herself?
Yes Gerhard but a service history is simply proof that the work has been carried out, you should of course keep every reciept for every item you purchase for servicing the bike for just such an occasion and combine it with any service history prior to you owning it. you do that dont you?
Ordinarily, I’d agree. However, I’ve half a dozen guitars, various amplification & a lot of vinyl - anything above the one bike would be a bike too far, methinks.
This seems like a fair site to ask the difficult question about this model. 3 years ago I picked up a t100 865cc 2008 carbed bike, 18000km s one owner. I found it to be adequate but really nothing amazing other than that it was dead reliable. May I ask you people what you honestly think of these bikes? Are the water cooled ones so much better for twice the money? Im not boiling your pots, I wanna see if I was just unlucky. Thanks.
Performance wise they are absolutely NOT amazing. You buy the Bonnie if you love it's retro styling. I jump on my Bandit 12 when I feel the need for speed.
Just sold a Honda getting ready to purchase a T120....made sure he gave me $500 insurance excess before he rode it. Last thing you want is for him to drop it or steal it and not be covered.
Had a friend that did something similar a few years ago. When he got back the seller had disappeared and it turned out the bike had been stolen. So no bike and no deposit!

Thanks for doing this video. I'm currently in the process of looking for a used Bonneville. How many miles is a lot? If I'm looking at ten year on Bonnie with 10,000 miles on it...is that considered a lot? For a car it would be low mileage (1,000 per year) but I don't know how it works with bikes. My goal is to find something in good shape for under 5 grand, which seems very doable.
I started riding bikes at 16 and still doing it at 62, but when people meet me for the first time they instantly say born-again biker? Currently riding a 1997 Honda ST1100 that I picked up for £1300 with 38K on the clock, 30 months ago. All that was needed was a new front tyre. Apart from maintenance and usual replacement wear and tear items, there has been no additional costs. If I sold it today I'd probably get what I paid for it, maybe more? All sound advice and as you say there are plenty of really good s/h bikes out there.
Just one thing I would like to add to your for s/h bike buyers guide. Look for high mileage bikes of the makes and models you are interested in. Not to buy but as a test of durability. If you can't find them there's a reason for that and it's usually that they're beyond repair economical repair when they go wrong.
Good, sound advice there Stuart. It's obvious you've been shopping before. I always resented the tag 'born again biker'. Some of us have never been away. On one occasion, I was asked, by a young shaver with more money than sense, "where did you get your broken in biker look?" Answer.....it comes of being a broken in biker. And yes, I appreciate I've been lucky in that I never had to give it up. As for the male menapaus......I've always been an overgrown child. Over the years, I've seen them come and seen them go. Some stay.........and they become something else, something just like you. So maybe we shouldn't jump to conclusions based on age and appearance? Anyone looking to buy second hand could do a lot worse than list the points you made, and wotk through them one at a time. We'll done and well said.

Just picked up a T100 black 2015 black with 4000 miles on it. The guy got sick and couldn't ride it anymore. The price is downright ridiculous. Stop leaving these beautiful machines in your garages and drive them while you can!

I have been riding motorcycles since the age of 10 been married 3 times second marriage I sold the bike to get refrigerator and a front door for a house I didn't own it was rented from her father I was married to her for about a year because I was going to buy another motorcycle and she said that was not allowed... lol there are a lot of things she told me I couldn't do big mistake. But the number one mistake was that she abused my eleven-year-old son caught her slapping him in the face just because he wouldn't listen to her screaming I got home from work just as it was happening. We packed up and left. My parents respected one another they did things when they wanted to and they didn't have to ask permission they loved each other very much and respected each other the way it should be. 😊 just turned 63 I haven't been without a motorcycle since actually I have purchased several motorcycles since that mistake...lol I'm going to die with a motorcycle or on a motorcycle. I am going to enjoy life what life I have left. 😁 and I can see you're doing the same thing ride on. 😎 I'm going to leave my motorcycles and everything else I own to my son when I move on to the next plane of existence. 😊 nice to be retired and debt free well almost still have to pay taxes...lol I've noticed the roads in your country are very narrow. The roads here in Maine even on the back roads are twice as wide even some of them have a breakdown lane. Really have to be on your toes especially them sheep them little guys dart out very quickly.

I've been riding full time for 51 years. My midlife crises never came, if it did I missed it.

When it comes to bank transfers if the buyer or seller is reluctant or unsure I have in the past done a £10 payment to get the transfer set up and provide confidence, then when this happens the rest of the money can be transferred with full confidence. Wonderful advice at 10:35-40. I couldn't sell my T-140s due to that very reason. One was my late father's (1973) and the other (1977) we bought together in 1986.
I am doing it properly .... been working myself to the bone to set aside the cash for a motorbike again, while still doing renovations for the wife :) ... but I am going "Full Mid Life Born Again Biker" by being very cliche and getting a Harley that I have always wanted ... and I am nearly ready to make the purchase!

When I retired, I visited a motorcycle shop, was looking for a 'bigger' bike. But as I was walking through all the new (2012) race bikes to get to the back of the bike shop where the big bike was, I couldn't help but stop and pause for a moment amidst all those racing bikes. They reminded me of my youth, where the KZ900, or the KZ1000 ruled the roads in the '70s. There were none of those, at least not in the physical form of the old KZ 1000's.
However, I had to sit on one of those new bikes. Well, I never made it back to the big bike. Lol. I figured with a helmet on, no one would know that I was an old man on a youthful 2012 KZ1000 Ninja. Lol.
She represents my retirement, no 'crisis', so I still have her to this day. For my soon to be 60th birthday, I'm going to go for a different bike, a Triumph. I'm thinking of the Rocket or Bonneville 1200 (Marlon Brando, Steve McQueen!).
Having a hard time making up my mind which one, so I'm thinking of getting both (I'm fortunate in my older age, but as you said, I'm one of those who worked my ass off all my life).
Anyhow, this Triumph search brought me to you, thank you so much for your incredible research! I'm going to try that tab ($) that supports your channel! I'm already subbed, so that tab is the least I could do for all of your help! You're videos, my good Sir, are definitely worth some payback!

When I bought my little Suzuki it was missing a bolt that holds up the gear shifter and left foot peg, and I'm pretty sure it needs a new battery, but I got it for such a great price I don't really mind. It runs well and it's great for learning how ride. I had my first "big ride" along the country roads near my house today and it was fantastic! Well worth the extra price of a few new little parts.
As always, this is a very useful video! I am planning on getting my motorcycle license very soon and with it, obviously, my first bike. You answered all the questions I had in mind. Thanks a lot for the work you put in your videos.

Having bought numerous lightly used mc's from private parties, your guidance is thorough and sage, Stuart. My challenge when I meet a clean bike I'm interested in is, staying objective. I tend to swoon and let objectivity fly out the window! Fortunately, I've been lucky. With the exception of a Triumph Sprint that burned oil, I've not been left stranded and been able to enjoy these bikes - until the next one came along. I test rode the Sprint but ignored the black around the edge of the tailpipe.
Most purchases were sold for a simple reason: they weren't comfortable for more than an hour - some after 10 minutes. The bike may be reliable and well taken care of. Unless you plan to only do local rides, pay attention to how your knees and wrists like the riding position.
You nailed every point. Good job. But, you forgot the bit about having a towel!

Good advice Stuart, I recently looked at a 2005 T100 with 1500 miles on the clock and it was immaculate . Unfortunately when I looked in the tank it was full of rust du to being stood for 9 years ! Some times low milage bargains aren't bargains at all !! Thanks to you I didn't buy it.

I am 40 and I am in a different position. I am looking for a bike that does not make me feel too you or too old. I had a Ducati Monster when I was in my 20s, at 28 I moved to London so I parked my bike. I went back home at 38 with a wife and a daughter, I restored my Ducati... unfortunately my back was 10 years older and it did not like it so I started to look at other types of bike.
my first choice was the new Moto Guzzi V7 but when I tried the Triumph Scrambler (2010) I felt in love with it and I bought it. Unfortunately I don't like few things:
- EFI is beautiful but carbs are carbs. With carbs you feel the bike.
- It's too high for me, I am 168cm (5.6?). I am not tip toeing but I feel clumsy.
- It's too heavy.
Other than that, the bike is amazing.
I am now undecided between a 2001 Triumph Bonneville and a 1975 Moto Guzzi T3.
for the last 25 years at least (since I was 35..), I've responded to numerous accusations of whatever my next new 'hobby' is a MLC-'no, it is a mid life awakening'.. good Vid Stuart, thank you.

Great video Stu, but if you're looking at an old triumph and the owner wheels it out of the shed and you check for oil leaks and there is none, it's a red flag, walk away, or at least put oil in it before you ride home, lol.
Good advice throughout. It’s great having a choice, car or bike. I used to only have a bike because I couldn’t afford a car. Now the bike can stay at home when it’s raining, where’s the mid life in that lol. Love the videos keep em coming.

Worth checking if starter boss mod has been done on earlier models "Search "Triumph starter boss failure" if this happens it can write off the bike ,as the crankcases plus clutch cover need replacing . Its worth having TTP SafeStart mod done , to reinforce starter boss , just for peace of mind , because if starter boss fails its often RIP Bonneville

A cuplu things: Whilst working as a backyard mechanic the boss told me that if you ask about price, and the owner uses the work "well" as in "Well I was hoping to get X dollars" that means they are open to negotiation. Test drive: take your hands off the handle bars briefly, and see if the bike still runs straight. If it doesn't it can mean the frame has been twisted from a accident. Happy hunting. Ronn

Quick story - home from work early last night, wife says why don't you have an hour in the gym before tea, jump on the T120 and park up outside the gym, about to go in when a guy run's up. "I live in central London and have just got job on the outskirts. Always used to have a bike and looking to take it up again to commute. Love your T120...can you tell me more about it?" 30 mins later we're still talking Bonneville's and eventually I jot down your channel and tell him to check it out. I only got 30 mins in the gym but met a great guy and spread the T120 & Fillingham love. Thankyou sir!!

It's been 25 years since my last bike and now the kids are grown and the wife is gone. Time to get a new bike and ride. These Triumphs are really starting to grow on me.
I just bought a 2006 with only 6000 miles on it. Got a good deal as far as I'm concerned, as well.
Another excellent video. I’ve been fortunate enough to have owned two ac T100. And I’m sorry I ever parted with them but alas they were just two of too many. Quickly from a sellers point. I had a guy come to look at my T100 that was for sale and he talked and appeared to be very legitimate in his interest in this bike. Now my bike was showroom clean with less than 5000 Kms. 3000 miles. He came and inspected it asked all the good questions then asked to take it for a test ride. I asked him for his valid drivers permit ( I usually don’t like to let my bikes out of my sight however if I get the feeling the chap is real then I’ll take the chance with security his licence) ok he takes off. 45 mins later he returns with a big smile on his face and gets off the bike. I’m a bit furious but ask ok then what do you think. He says thanks but I’ll pass. I ask politely for his reason. He says (and are you ready for this) he only wanted to see how these retro triumphs road and couldn’t get a test ride at a dealer. Got in his car a drove away. So he fooled me with his so called interest in this bike. He just wanted a free joy ride. I traded it in at the dealer the next week for my Kawasaki Concourse.

Great vid. thanks. I first started watching your vids when I was looking at buying a RE 650 love all your vids. So the Wife and I usually have a cruiser that we ride together and I always have my own bike that I like to ride on my own in our current situation I ride a RE GT650 and I love that little bike I really connect with it and we ride a Kawasaki Vulcan Drifter 800, great bike, however we/I decided that we needed another bike the drifter is really nice be we have been riding it for 8 years and with out going in to detail, Gwen, suggested, when we were at a Ducati, Triumph dealer, she said " well I quite enjoy riding on the RE GT650, I love this Bonneville T100, would you want to replace the Drift with a Bonneville" Well Crapperone, no wonder I married her lol my eyes just about popped out of my head and I said, "Ya" with a huge grin on my face lololol. So that is the Story and while doing some research on the Bonnevilles I came across this vid, again thank you for the vid and tips on buying used, great advice. I know you do 2 vids a week and I can only imagine how busy you are but I would like to ask you a question, you may not be able to answer as there are lots of trolls on here that may want to chellenge you but I'll ask, you can answer if you want and or if you have time and if not I'll understand. Question is as follows also if there are people that read this that are well versed in Triumph paralelle Twins please feel free to offer your thoughts, ok question. In your opinion/ your thoughts, assuming a Bonneville 865 is well taken care of, at how many km/miles would you not buy a used one. Thank you so much Cheers Karl Squire.

Sage advise Stuart. I wouldn't trust the dealers either. I freely admit that I'm no good at buying 2nd hand & I have been stung in factory dealerships (cars Holden / G.M. & B.MW.)a couple of times. I like your torch idea it makes you stop and look
Even buying new from a dealership has its problems Bernie, especially from Triumph I had no end of problems with the T120 in the first months.
Good ideas, well done film sir! :-) One more thing to look at is the rubberthingies in the rear hub. With your rubber glove on, grab the sprocket and push it back and forth in the chain direction. It should be a little movement, cause that's what it's there for. But not to much! That could make vibrations similar to a bad chain and infect gearchange. ;-) These rubbers can be a bit pricey. I think most manufacturers use them. So it's a good idea in general. :-)
Hi John yes i did consider mentioning the cush drive, but as its not generally a safety issue, doesn't stop the bike running and most people dont even know the cush drive exists i thought it might complicate things , was also conscious of the videos running time. BUT your right that is a very valid point!

Great video. Nice reminder of what to look for. On my way out right now to look at an 09 Bonneville SE. I need a lower bike because my hips won't let me easily get on and off my VStrom anymore and my "ADV" days are over unfortunately. I will say though that video is much easier to watch at 1.25x speed... guess this California guy is used to faster talking... lol. But seriously, I really enjoyed this video!

I rode a bike when i was quite young (earnd it throwing pappers) . Now im sixty and ive have the bug .It comes and goes. I really need/want a bike. They save gas. They can be riden safley. Routs taken Precatinary measures etc. I would sure beat a bicycle. Plus i kind of want my small mid size four speed eight cyl car again. After about 40 years my old one had been knocked out of the picture by a teeny bopper.
I'm a biker . Started riding at ten on a Triumph Cub. Buying a used bike. Simple. Look for one all original, and hasn't got a lot of scrapes from going down. Then If it's What you want get it

- Rode when I was younger and gave it up due to having a serious accident.
- Returned to riding at 50
- Wife's first words "well you better get disability insurance!". "Love you too" I thought but let's face it guys, we're women's plow horses.
- Searched endlessly for a T-100 that would finally help me turn me into Steve McQueen or Mickey Rourke in Rumble Fish that wouldn't cost the kid's college fund.
- Found one, a 2018 T-100 black with 800 miles. Turns out the seller had a demanding wife too but hey, his loss, my gain.

I had a '69 Bonneville (first bike in 1979). Oh how I wish I'd kept it, but now I have a '96 Thunderbird and I won't sell that one!

Very good video, lots of good information, but I won't take the risk on my first bike, I bought brand new, I purchased a brand new bike in November with big discount, plus 5 Year free Warranty for a price of two years used one with low KM, the catch is that I have to go 600km to pick it up and drive it back :)

Yes Gerhard but a service history is simply proof that the work has been carried out, you should of course keep every reciept for every item you purchase for servicing the bike for just such an occasion and combine it with any service history prior to you owning it. you do that dont you?

This seems like a fair site to ask the difficult question about this model. 3 years ago I picked up a t100 865cc 2008 carbed bike, 18000km s one owner. I found it to be adequate but really nothing amazing other than that it was dead reliable. May I ask you people what you honestly think of these bikes? Are the water cooled ones so much better for twice the money? Im not boiling your pots, I wanna see if I was just unlucky. Thanks.
Performance wise they are absolutely NOT amazing. You buy the Bonnie if you love it's retro styling. I jump on my Bandit 12 when I feel the need for speed.
Just sold a Honda getting ready to purchase a T120....made sure he gave me $500 insurance excess before he rode it. Last thing you want is for him to drop it or steal it and not be covered.
Had a friend that did something similar a few years ago. When he got back the seller had disappeared and it turned out the bike had been stolen. So no bike and no deposit!

Thanks for doing this video. I'm currently in the process of looking for a used Bonneville. How many miles is a lot? If I'm looking at ten year on Bonnie with 10,000 miles on it...is that considered a lot? For a car it would be low mileage (1,000 per year) but I don't know how it works with bikes. My goal is to find something in good shape for under 5 grand, which seems very doable.

Hi Stuart. How does this t100 pay day stack up against the Enfield 650 ?
I started riding bikes at 16 and still doing it at 62, but when people meet me for the first time they instantly say born-again biker? Currently riding a 1997 Honda ST1100 that I picked up for £1300 with 38K on the clock, 30 months ago. All that was needed was a new front tyre. Apart from maintenance and usual replacement wear and tear items, there has been no additional costs. If I sold it today I'd probably get what I paid for it, maybe more? All sound advice and as you say there are plenty of really good s/h bikes out there.

Just one thing I would like to add to your for s/h bike buyers guide. Look for high mileage bikes of the makes and models you are interested in. Not to buy but as a test of durability. If you can't find them there's a reason for that and it's usually that they're beyond repair economical repair when they go wrong.

I always resented the tag 'born again biker'.
Some of us have never been away.
On one occasion, I was asked, by a young shaver with more money than sense, "where did you get your broken in biker look?"
Answer.....it comes of being a broken in biker.
And yes, I appreciate I've been lucky in that I never had to give it up.
As for the male menapaus......I've always been an overgrown child.
Over the years, I've seen them come and seen them go.
Some stay.........and they become something else, something just like you.
So maybe we shouldn't jump to conclusions based on age and appearance?
Anyone looking to buy second hand could do a lot worse than list the points you made, and wotk through them one at a time.

I have been riding motorcycles since the age of 10 been married 3 times second marriage I sold the bike to get refrigerator and a front door for a house I didn't own it was rented from her father I was married to her for about a year because I was going to buy another motorcycle and she said that was not allowed... lol there are a lot of things she told me I couldn't do big mistake. But the number one mistake was that she abused my eleven-year-old son caught her slapping him in the face just because he wouldn't listen to her screaming I got home from work just as it was happening. We packed up and left. My parents respected one another they did things when they wanted to and they didn't have to ask permission they loved each other very much and respected each other the way it should be. 😊 just turned 63 I haven't been without a motorcycle since actually I have purchased several motorcycles since that mistake...lol I'm going to die with a motorcycle or on a motorcycle. I am going to enjoy life what life I have left. 😁 and I can see you're doing the same thing ride on. 😎 I'm going to leave my motorcycles and everything else I own to my son when I move on to the next plane of existence. 😊 nice to be retired and debt free well almost still have to pay taxes...lol I've noticed the roads in your country are very narrow. The roads here in Maine even on the back roads are twice as wide even some of them have a breakdown lane. Really have to be on your toes especially them sheep them little guys dart out very quickly.
